MIT 8.821 String Theory and Holographic Duality, Fall 2014
View the complete course: ocw.mit.edu/8-821F14
Instructor: Hong Liu
In this lecture, Prof. Liu first finishes discussing class string dynamics in the light-cone gauge, and then proceeds to quantize the theory in the light-cone gauge.

What about the renormalization? Is this not similar to sweeping anything that does not fit under the rug? Please explain, I am a bit confused.

Renormalization are simple a careful limit in theories that have scale anomaly. In path integral this is well understood. A careful way to defining the limit epsilon goes to zero. In operators language this is more complicated to see, but is translated by the fact that there is operators that don't commute, and because of that some ambiguities arises. This ambiguities are fixed by requiring the preservation of some symmetries, but dealing with this ambiguities are very hard because they are typical divergent: coming from commutation of series of modes. The right way to proceed is to deform your theory to a theory without divergence (putting a regulatator) and try to apply a meaningful limit preserving the symmetries and cancellations. All this are only a careful limit in quantities that fluctuate and have complying between scales. This occurs in statistical mechanics, critical points, turbulence,.....all that. Aplying the continuum limit is more subtitle.

A simple "I don't know" would have sufficed.
