The Remembrance fact is a really interesting little meta tie-in, considering that in-universe, the same circumstances surrounding the props also reflect on the two factions. The Imperial Daleks are meant to be almost brand new but enhanced, whilst the Renegade Daleks are long-lived veteran Daleks of the old Empire. That’s really cool that the props themselves reflect that history!

The BBC most of the time only ever used the same 4 props, 5 if you were lucky during the classic series, the rest were just goons.

Can you imagine if they used the movie dalek in the magicians apprentice it would be amazing to see how people try to fit it into canon. Edit: with the smaller lights bigger bumper and slats on the mid section it could be a in-between dalek between TV invasion of earth and the following story.

The Special Weapons Dalek in series 9 was sourced from a private company, its proportions are on the wonk, like the sides of the gun box don’t fully align with the plate separating the skirt and midsection as the original prop did. And since Dalek 63•88 pointed this out, I haven’t been able to unsee it.

That's a good point, I hadn't considered that - the fighter pods fulfill the same purpose, just as flying units that are much faster

The Red Top Dalek actually originated in a stage play called Curse of The Daleks in 1965.

I’m pretty sure the Dalek mutant prop used in ‘Parting of the Ways’ was actually the same prop used in ‘Dalek’. Amazing how a change of lighting, cinematography and dialogue changes how you see a blobby squid-mutant.

another prop fact is 2 Peter Cushing movie daleks appear in the chase with their extended skirt panels removed in the dalek time machine and in full later on in the story. Dalek 63.88 strikes again with obscure facts

Damn, I've been wanting the paradigm daleks to return for ages, but more in a secondary role like in the Asylum of the daleks, and to learn that they could of appeared in the Magicians apprentice, really infuriates me.

I remember seeing a blue Dalek at the Madame Tussaud’s Doctor Who exhibition when I was a sproglet, way back in the 80s. And I seem to recall reading somewhere, many years later, that this prop had consisted of the top half of the gold Dalek from the Katy Manning nude photos plus a new and very inaccurately shaped skirt section, specially built for the exhibition. It would be great to establish whether this is true or whether I’ve been misinformed or just remembered it wrongly…

The distinction I use is that a costume on its own wouldn't work without the person to wear it, but a Dalek is still a Dalek whether there's an operator inside or not

​​@@dalekbumpsFair enough, but I would say that as they are character suits designed to be worn/operated, they are costumes. A non-working version like a SFX dummy or a "Planet" goon counts as a prop, absolutely. Likewise the little Dalek Emperor mutant in the model is a prop, but the close-up version is a puppet. A costume on its own, perhaps on a mannequin used in the background of a shot, still "works" in the same way as an unoccupied Dalek costume. But in both cases, you can always tell, can't you?

To expand on this point, the Daleks were designed around the shape of a person sitting inside, hence the forward-sloping skirt. They are, in a word, ergonomic. One reason the Paradigm design failed is that they treated the Daleks as props that could be scaled up arbitrarily. Thus the Paradigm were too tall to operate seated, but too short to operate standing, and were quite heavy as well.
