Graham Parker's 'Squeezing Out Sparks' is my #1 for 1979 by far. No-one was playing London Calling in 1979 in the USA because it came out in 1980 (it really should be considered a 1980 album, along with the first Pretenders album.) Not a big Neil Young fan but 'Rust Never Sleeps' is my favorite by him and would definitely include it in my top ten for 1979; also the Buzzcock's 'Singles Going Steady' and Tom Verlaine's first solo album.

I didn’t realize The Clash was released in January in the US. Graham Parker is good but not top ten for me.

'Squeezing' ranks near the top of the decade - never mind the year. It's such a shame that Nick Lowe swiped the Rumour right out from under the guy. He really deserved the career that Elvis ended up having instead. And 'Last Night' (and 'Breakin' In My Heart' ) from TV's debut are two comparatively overlooked gems from a legendary career.

Their lone LP (which is on KZbin) can best be described as Skynyrd played at Ramones tempo! The Doll were proof that one-hit-wonder status is not limited to Yanks. In late 78/early 79 they scored a fairly big UK/Euro hit with "desire me". They even appeared on Top of the Pops twice to lip-synch it! Unfortunately when their full album dropped in late 79 "desire me" had been quickly forgotten (timing IS everything in this business!) "Listen To the Silence" turned out to be an apt title since NO ONE bought it! Too bad- it is a beautiful memorable collection of early New Wave synth tunes. This was probably the hardest year for me 1. Bob Dylan: Slow Train Coming 2. Riot: Narita 3. Motörhead: Overkill 4. Motörhead: Bomber 5. Blackfoot: Strikes 6. Germs: (GI) 7. April Wine: First Glance 8. AC/DC: Highway to Hell 9. Van Halen: II 10. Judas Priest: Hell Bent For Leather Wouldn't mind going to one of Don Bolles shows just so I could ask him for a Germs burn

Hi and thanks, what a great year! I saw lots of those bands in concert in Paris, all are nice souvenir of my youth...Didn't like Madness though, I found 'one step beyond' vulgar and boring, may be I should try again. Never heard of your number one, what is the name of the band please ?

Pretty good list. Kind of surprised Pretenders debut album wasn't included. I think their sound was totally new, and after Farndon was booted and Honeyman-Scott passed on (after Pretenders II), they lost their sound despite Chrissy Hynde's singing and writing the lyrics. The only bad song on that first album in my opinion was "Brass In Pocket".
@vinylrichie0072 жыл бұрын
I don’t dislike Brass In Pocket but not close to being the best song on the album. I always wondered why it was the single. I’m not sure but I think the Pretenders debut and London Calling came out in December in the UK and January in the US. As a result the Clash made this list and the Pretenders are being considered for 1980.

I don't think top whatever lists are pointless. Granted, art is subjective and everyone has their own opinion but when certain records show up consecutively one may be inspired to seek these treasures out. Also, according to rumor, the B-52's were John Lennon's favorite band at the time of his death. Check out Wallison Ladmoh (featuring Don Bolles) on Hellion Rebellion Rock N'Roll Association KZbin Thanks and keep being awesome!

Just quickly, and probably not definitive but, 1 the crack by the ruts, 2 machine gun etiquette by the damned, 3 lodger by bowie, 4 I'm the man by Joe jackson, 5&6 overkill & bomber by motorhead, 7 black rose by thin lizzy, 8 strangers in the night by the fantastic UFO, 9 London calling by the clash and at number 10 , whatever the f**k you want. I'm listening to the damned as we speak, so good night all.
@loudobbs53372 жыл бұрын
I can’t argue with that list. Many were considered and would be in my top 20. I must say I didn’t care for Lodger as much as I remembered. It has some great songs but that opening song just doesn’t belong on a top ten album.

Hello. I'm going to check out that Weirdo's ep. I probably can't afford it but hey maybe I can't afford to miss it. I spend my cash how I want and as long as her indoors don't find out then I'll probably be unharmed. The songs "One Step Beyond" and "Madness" on the Madness record are cover versions of Prince Buster. They liked that guy so much they even named their band after one of his songs. Only problem with his records is, like most Jamaican ska, they are hard to find, expensive and usually fairly knackered! Probably best to go for reissues with early reggae stuff. I see you got Scientist "Space Invaders" lp, all his albums with the cartoon covers are great. I think my favourite is maybe "Heavyweight Dub Champion", that one's based round Barrington Levy songs and he's awesome. Before and after Scientist's cartoon cover albums they are hit and miss so I'd check em out before buying, some of them I consider more like Dj tools for mixing.

My local store has Scientists Wins The World Cup. I’ll pick it up next time. Their is a Weirdos comp Destroy All Music that has the complete Ep on side two.

Pointless? What else are you gonna do? What is a top album lol? Why does it have to be a top album? I remember in 79 my mom spinning Carroll King on her Console that had disco strobe lights built in. Some would say that Carroll King is pointless but honestly I can remember that like it was yesterday. I was 5 years old! I remember Carroll King and Going Fishing when I was 5. Im 48 and I still love both of those things even more today. If you do it do it because that's the only point ....nice shirt 😎🤟🤟✌️
