I have spent more than 10 years in Asia, and I still like Thailand very much. Bangkok and Pattaya is where I have lived. I stay right now in Pattaya. Rentals are very affordable in this moment due to the plandemic issues. Hopefully Thailand will be more welcoming in the future for long term stays. The last 6 years I lived in Mindanao, Philippines. An amazing place, with very friendly and easy visa policy. Arrive without any visa, and extend your stay up to 3 years as a tourist. Bali is fantastic, and it has different climates, depending on where you settle. However, getting a long term visa there is not easy. Malaysia is very good and affordable. India is interesting but noisy and chaotic at times. China is very expensive and people are quite impolite sorry to say, and there are almost no English speakers. Common for all these places is that the authorities may be very tyrannical at times, just notice how they locked everything down with all kind of silly rules. This was terrible in the Philippines and I guess almost all over Asia, and beyond...

@@mrc6182 Thailand's yearly retirement visa renewal means the Thais can (will?) kick you out when you become sickly. I do understand the need for ridding themselves of expat moochers, but who doesn't get sickly and frail when old? You could end up kicked out at 90 years of age, senile and sickly, with nowhere to go and not even understanding what is happening. Really really bad. That's my #1 reason I won't retire in Thailand. And I really really like Thailand. If I could be guaranteed permanent residency I'd be there in a heartbeat.
@paulh7798

I'm more worried about losing the ability to extend a visa when I'm old and sickly (and possibly senile). It happens and it happens a lot. Retiring without permanent residence is really risky unless you are prepared to go back "home" and have people to care for you there. I'm not.

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia capital)is the best city for expats, according to research by US-based language learning app Preply. focused on factors including affordability, internet connectivity, safety and how hard the local language is to learn. People moving to the Malaysian capital can get by on the equivalent of about $1,091 a month, benefitting from low taxes and housing costs.

Sadly the previous government demonstrated a real xenophobia towards long-term retiree and other long-stay tourists with incomes from abroad. They increase the required salary/pension requirements for the Malaysia My Second Home Program from @US2500/month to US10,000/month. Also one has to put in a Fixed Bank Deposit in Ringgit (with poor interest rates) of US200,000 (previously about US80K with numerous allowable withdrawals). Finally one must demonstrate a US300K foreign asset base. There's a US 2500 application fee ( previously free) and a visa fee of US125/year (US 25/year prior to 2022) plus other fees. A health check and criminal background check is required. Supposedly they wanted to attract a better quality of applicant. They had virtually no one bite. In fact they are losing the older recipients whose visas are coming up for renewal. Last year they lost 2000 visa holders who opted not to renew (plus their dependants). That was about 80-90% of the visas issued a decade ago. Unless the new government flips the program their bleed old applicants and will have no new ones. That's a loss of several billion dollars a year in expenditures, fixed deposits, property and car purchases, health care, insurance, and if the kids are in school a major base of support for international schools. The East Malaysian States have a Constitutional right to operate their own immigration programs...and have retained a Sarawak MM2H and Sabah MM2H that remain affordable and easier to qualify for. East Malaysia is less Islamically influenced and is more multicultural and relaxed. It's also predominantly English speaking (at least it's the Lingua Franca) and has more nature and cultural tourism. Less hung up about alcohol. They do have 5G in the cities

All I can suggest to anyone contemplating Jakarta, KL or BKK is that you need to spend at least a month in your chosen city. If you are under 35 and you have a decent budget, these cities may be everything you are looking for - just take the claims of foreigners living on 300 baht a day with a grain of salt. Assuming you don't spend the entire month partying, you will begin to get a feel for the pros and cons of these crowded cities.

As someone who was born in Malaysia and lived in Thailand, Indonesia and China, the cost estimations here are really for the very frugal backpacker. And it is for 1 person renting a room rather than an apartment. It's doable, just not realistic in the long run. Double the estimates and you can probably get by comfortably as a couple.

You forgot Pattaya... Bigger than Chang Mai and Phuket with a much bigger business and IT life, and with the best nightlife in the world. And looking at the Thai foot massage index... One Hour Footmassage: 600 THB - Phuket 500 THB - Samui 450 THB - Bangkok 400 THB - HuaHin 150 THB - Pattaya (not only are we the COOLEST place to live, we are also the cheapest, Chang Mai is a bit cheeper in some places but dont have a beach and is way too far from a big airport)

I have a very nice fully furnished apartment in Siem Reap city center for 200 USD plus utilities. I have AC but don't use so my electric and water comes to 11 or 12 USD per month. There are cheaper places in the city but I feel very comfortable here. I imagine you can get better deals wherever you go. My rent in Surat Thani, Thailand was 160 USD per month.

I am currently in the province outside of Davao. I rent a 2 bedroom concrete house with tile floors for 5,000 pesos. My first house was 4 br. in a gated community in Antipolo, Rizal for 15,000 pesos. My friend has a 2 bedroom condo in Taguig for 25,,000 pesos. I think rent is cheap here.

im thai and i can guarantee you that Thailand is extremely cheap to live even in the city. i spend only about 20-30US$ for a meal per day. i remember when i study in America, 20-25US$ is only for 1 dish only. it's extremely different. for an expat i think you only need a salary about 35000US$ per year then you can live like rich people here. it's true. i told my friend from German about this, he didn't believe me at first but now he got a job here and plans to live in Thailand forever. i told him i don't think he should live here forever bc i think his country is better, he said life is very easy here.

I did not get real value out of this video as you don't break down the monthly costs without rent. A digital nomad needs to know what electricity, wifi, water costs & medical insurance are. I'm 60 and still a digital nomad, so a breakdown on visa costs and terms are also important. How do rentals work? How does one purchase property?

All good suggestions however you neglected one important thing.....visas! As you know, you cant just show up in any of these places & expect to stay as long as you want. There is always a limit on visas for any country however the easiest way around it is if you have "deep pockets" to invest in the country. If not, you may be in for an enjoyable but limited stay.

1st of all China might be a great place with lots of beautiful countryside, beautiful women, lots of culture and good food, but who would want to live under Communism there if they don't have to?" Bangladesh is so poor Why would anyone move there, and Sri Lanka has the worst cuisine in Asia possibly the whole world, I ate in a Sri Lankin buffet in NYC once and swore that I never wanted to eat Sri Lankin food again.
