Im curious, while the cost of living is less, isn't the average income lower as well? If you are working in these countries you will be making the same amount the locals make in general which will make the cost of living just as difficult to live on?

Bali is a great place if you are comfortable in the water and a good free diver. spear fishing is a nice way to make more than a comfortable living while also not hurting the population of fish too harshly simply because you don't need much income to live and fish is a valuable resource there. 😀

Exactly. And what wasn't mentioned either is that in many of these countries it is rather difficult (and expensive) for a foreign national to apply for a work permit, let alone obtain permanent residency or at least a long-term visa.

* Remember: A lot of viewers and I mean a lot of viewers are looking at ( Retirement ) within these foreign countries and ( cost-of-living ), and the last thing they want is ( employment ). * We are basically..., being run out of the United States..., because of "high prices on everything" and ( cost-of-living ), and a foreign country, might be the place to be and live... United States citizens on ( Social Security ) are looking for an affordable place or foreign country to live with a lower ( cost-of-living ) and enjoy their senior years in comfort and affordability, and beautiful surroundings. Hi, Mike..., Can you please break down the ( cost-of-living ) expenses for these foreign countries..., because that is what makes the foreign countries cheap. What makes up your ( cost-of-living ) expenses, ( e.g., rent, food, electricity and gas, internet with speed, cellphone, transportation, bus or cab, cable TV, safe drinking water, medical expenses, including dental, entertainment, haircut or salon including affordable restaurants, bars, and necessities, etc. ). * "WHAT DOES THE CHEAPEST COUNTRIES ( COST-OF-LIVING INCLUDE ? )" Without this important information per foreign country..., we are a little bit in the dark... Thank you for this really interesting and original concept for a video. As for places to live, I have surprising number of friends that (independent of each other) decided to retire in Belize and a couple more who are just counting the months before they too, go there. Not sure if I could live in such a climate, but for the people who I know who love it there, it is apparently luxurious, the beaches are top notch and evidently there are many nude beaches as well. I suppose that if one were to live in such a hot and muggy climate, the ability to "let it all hang out" is one factor that could be near the top of the list.

I hope to visit Belize again someday! It is incredibly gorgeous there. It offers lush rainforests, white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters . The people are incredibly friendly too. South Africa ? Is beautiful, but also very corrupt, very risky and infrastructure is falling apart. So if you like to live in a gated community. China, cheap ? Those days are gone. Also if you like to live in a totalitarian system, good luck. Philippines is great, just stay away from Manila, way too polluted, crowded, traffic. Cebu, davao,cdo is nice. Thailand has lot to offer, people are friendly. PNG is very dangerous, especially Port Moresby. I am missing Indonesia here

My wife and I found ourself in a position when we either transition ourself from 20K earned monthly income to 3K retirement benefits and as result pressured to move from Connecticut to some bible belt states just to survive or, as an alternative to select one of those affordable luxury countries. We actually very seriously explored and considered 10 countries from your list (Costa Rica, Belize, Ecuador, Columbia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Czech Republic, Greece, and Bulgaria) and finally we have selected Bulgaria (#3 on your list) and after living here for 16 months we are still happy with our choice. The place we live (Saints Constantine and Helena - Varna suburb) is very comparable to two places we lived before (San Diego, CA and Auckland, New Zealand) but is at least 5-times cheaper. There is no perfect place for everyone, and some things drives us crazy here, but if you want to continue drink premium wines, eat organic food, and live in a sea-view luxury apartment located 5 minutes walk from beautiful beaches with excellent infrastructure and super fast Internet you have to select one of the countries you talked about.

I guess it depends on one’s interpretation of luxury. 😮 I live in Mexico, and the $600 range, cost of living, will only get you a potentially nice dwelling, but not luxury, and then you have to add the living costs. Also, supply and demand has increase the rental and sale prices, of late, and the weakening of the U.S. dollar has not helped.
@JudyR112
@JudyR112 Жыл бұрын
Sure the cost of living is low, but so is the pay. For example, my ex husband is Egyptian and was making the equivalent to $66 USD per week when he left there in 2009. Not to mention that his parent's upper middle class apartment had holes in the walls and the water would be spontaneously shut off for days. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

The title is quite misleading. For the monthly spend of $1000 please do not expect any type of “luxury”. I am intimately familiar with several countries on the list and $1K is sufficient for budget survival above the level of average local. To live comfortably I suggest one should triple that amount. I think the magic number for Europe is about $5K, Asia $4K, SA and South America $3K. Such a budget would deliver $7K lifestyle in US.

When I was a child, the U.S. government would pay your cost of moving to country no. 25. Unfortunately, that ‘60s government program is no longer in effect, because it proved very unpopular. Oh, one more thing about that country - if you move there, be careful, because there are land mines all over. They were placed there as part of that same U.S. government program, and even though Washington ended the program, it left those mines.

I visited Greece in 2021. Absolutely loved it. I hiked through a lot of areas where there were only locals. I passed a man tending his goats. We had a good half hour conversation. I spoke about a dozen words of Greek and he spoke no English. Very friendly people.

Yeah. I’m trying to figure out how the cost of living in the US is only $1200. There is no way you could live in “luxury” in the US with $1200. You would actually be below to the poverty line at $1200 a month.

Mike I think you’re great but I couldn’t help but feel like this list was a little unfair. First off, it’s kind of impossible to lump all of the US into one figure, even if it is an estimate. For example, you can’t possibly compare someplace like Iowa to the cost of living in California (honestly they may as well be two different countries lol). But I get that’s what you mean by median. Based on your list of places, even though some are gorgeous don’t get me wrong (both my parents are European immigrants so I’ve been around lol) some of those places just made my jaw drop. I’m in Florida where we have a massive Hispanic population, and what I’ve been told by people who’ve come here from Mexico and Colombia (and there are a lot of them) would give some nightmares. I’ve actually been to Mexico myself, and what you see once you get out of the tourist “bubbles” is a very different life then the endless party it looks like inside the resort walls. Also, I would seriously rethink your safety in some of those places, especially as an American. Another thing was the healthcare. In the US our healthcare definitely has its problems but god some of the places mentioned, well, I wouldn’t want to get sick in those places and I’ll just leave it at that. Please don’t think I’m coming down on you, mike, I absolutely love your show and think you’re great, I just think wherever you got this list from they may have not been actually taking everything into consideration as much as they claimed to have been. My two cents 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I think if you looked at impartial ratings of quality of medical care and safety, the US would rank far below some of the spots you worry about. I love my country but am dismayed by it’s trajectory and lack of affordability.

I have been for extended periods most of these countries ....half of them I would not seriously consider and the prices quoted here are very under true market value .. I would add an additional $400 - $ 500 monthly for a single person on most of them ... For example , having family in Egypt and spending part of the year there the real price for a normal NOT luxury life would be closer to $1200 a month ...

China's economy is not booming. It's doing the exact opposite and just going to get worse. China would've been very affordable and great to live in from mid 90's to 2014 or so. Also, big cities like Shanghai/Bejing are very different in terms of affordability from lesser known cities like Changsha, Zhuhai, Nanning and such. Even a famous tourist city like Guilin is much more affordable than a big city like Guanzhou or Shenzhen. I lived in China in 2003/2004 and again in 2013/2014. It was great, but I can tell things were starting to change for the worse starting in 2014.
