As an airline pilot that flies all over the globe the GMT complication is far and away my favorite. And it wasn't until I acquired one of my grail pieces, a Breitling Chronomat GMT, that I understood what you meant by "true GMT." There are so many appealing choices in your list, from the Glycine Airman with its rich heritage to the Sea Wolf GMT which is significant to me as I received a Sea Wolf as a gift on my 14th birthday. It is still in my collection. I'm leaning toward picking up one of those Ocean Star GMTs but I wish I could get them all! Thanks Teddy!

I bought my Zodiac Aerospace GMT on May 1st of 1969 for about fifty dollars from the ships store on the USS Wright. Even after a long and sometimes hard life, it still looks pretty good and keeps time just fine. I had it serviced for the second time about two months ago, and wore it most all afternoon today. It is the first item of real value that I ever bought, and is my most prized possession.

I have the Grand Seiko SBGE249 “Blizzard” and love it that the GMT hand, the power reserve indicator, and the sweep seconds hands are blued, while the hour and minute hands are not, which really helps the readability. The watch is also a Spring Drive. A pretty complete package for just under 6K.

Thanks for the generous replies😄. When I bought my “Blizzard”, Timeless offered, for $200, a $400 Magatoo navy alligator strap that was specifically made for this model so there is no gap between the case and the strap. It has become my choice to wear with the watch. I wish I could say I was savvy. I just got lucky🍀.

Thank you for your great comments on the Glycine Airman. For years I've been saying that this is the most under appreciated classic icon in the watch world, at least with regard to pilots watches. In an article I wrote on the 10 most iconic pilots watches of all time, the Airman comes in at no. 5. As background, I'm a retired military, corporate and airline pilot with almost 50 years experience. I wore my Pepsi GMT 16750 for 38 years, and picked the Airman Base 22 to replace it as my daily driver. My retirement watch is a Rolasor Sky Dweller. GMTs are also my favorite complication.

I have nowhere near the experience that you do, but I was Air Force, aircrew, for 6 years. It was essential, as you know, to have a good GMT watch strapped to our wrist. Military didn't exactly afford a large budget for a watch, even a Rolex back in the late '60s, arguably. So the Glycine definitely was within our ballpark. I picked up a newer version of few years ago. Love it.

Many of us Air Force flight crew members wore the Glycine in the late '60s and early '70s. It was not issued by the military and we could pick them up at the basic exchange. But we all wore them, regardless of being issued the generic Timex or whatever black-faced watch that the Air Force issued that time.
@vunguyenchannel
@vunguyenchannel 3 жыл бұрын
May I ask why did you choose the Glycine over the Timex?
@thomashelm6931
@thomashelm6931 3 жыл бұрын
@@vunguyenchannel actually, that is a great question. We were issued watches, as flight crew. Many manufacturers stepped up to produce them, including Timex. It did not say the brand on the watch, but one could tell, generally, who made it. It was a basic watch. It featured a black face, that could hack time and had indices and hands that would glow in the dark. The crystal was not a very good quality and would scratch easily. Additionally, there was no 24-hour complication on it. With the Glycine, you have a 24-hour watch that could tell time in three different time zones. We typically set that for GMT, local time in the time zone that we were flying out of, our home base. The military issued watch had none of those capabilities.

At 18mm thiccccc, that Omega should have 1200m+ water resistance.
@dasmesser1
@dasmesser1 3 жыл бұрын
I've seen the PO GMT quoted as 17mm thicc. In any case (pun intended), we have to consider the co-axial escapement is not as thin as a swiss-lever, plus the domed sapphire and see-through caseback probably add 2-3 mm in total. But at this point the identity of the Planet Ocean line is cemented: POs are not thin watches and they probably shouldn't change that.
@slanealb
@slanealb 3 жыл бұрын
The PO line in general is a little long in the tooth. I’m an Omega fanboy but readily admit that the GMT genre is where Omega seems to really lack punching power. The Oreo bothers me at the 9 and 18 on the bezel, I don’t like the transition of black/white.
@ItsNeverTooHot4Leather
@ItsNeverTooHot4Leather 3 жыл бұрын
@@slanealb I love Omega too, and I'm alright with POs being thicc like this, but Omega should really go all out on the WR specs. Omega should also reevaluate its GMT and worldtimer designs. They can do much better.

I just got the Sharp Edge SPB221 (black) a few weeks ago and it is awesome. In person, it definitely seems larger than it is (IMO). That could be because it's my biggest watch but, I think the crazy/massive wrist presence as well as the small bezel make it seem large. It also plays with light really, really well. It looks good in all situations, but really excels when it's in daylight. Plus, it's a "true" GMT.

Just stop with your ridiculous "low base weight" obsession. Your amateur hiking is not going to be affected in the slightest by a few grams or ounces extra on your wrist. First, you're a fool for wanting to take a Rolex hiking, second the weight savings of a "lighter" Rolex over a heavier one is less than having an extra protein bar for lunch or being slightly constipated. Honestly, if you shaved that scraggly beard and moppet hair on your head you'd save more weight. If you truly believed in low base weight, you wouldn't take a watch with you at all.

I happened to see a Seiko Kinetic GMT Sun033p1 on Amazon. It was a return, with no box or instruction book: $125 and IIRC free shipping. I jumped for it. The same watch is now listed on eBay for $426. After about two years, it quit; so I sent it to a Seiko overhaul center in California for about another $120, including shipping both ways. So I'm still out only a little more than half the price of a new one; and _far_ less than any of those listed here. Since the overhaul (about one year), it has performed flawlessly and accurately, although for some reason the battery/capacitor won't charge above the "four-month" level; but I can live with that. Wish I'd kept my old Navigator Timer mechanical from 1970: they're running about $1,800 on eBay.

Hey Teddy! I just wanted to point out that the first watch you discussed, the Tissot Chemin Des Tourelles has the exact same movement as the Mido, also a “true” GMT!

Good list indeed. But i would add Grand Seiko GMT models also. We all know, exceptional quality, not so big price. Would go somewhere before or after Tudor in this list. SBGE257 being my favourite model these days.

EXCELLENT video on GMT choices. Luckily, you can buy 9 of the 10. Well, you CAN buy the Rolex Pepsi off eBay for more than 2x MSRP. Of course, there will always be "why didn't you include...." questions about different models. IMHO, he covers the best options in each price range.

A very important point to note is that any watch using the ETA C07.661 movement, such as the Tissot mentioned at the start, are “true” (ugh hate that term) or “traveller’ GMTs. This movement is relatively new and has the potential to revolutionise the GMT market given the prices of the watches using this movement so far have been in the $1k-$2k price range, which was previously unheard of. So far mainly used by Tissot, Certina and Mido (Eg the Ocean Star GMT which was also mentioned), the major problem is that it has only been used in watches 42mm-45mm with 49mm+ lug to lug. As soon as this movement starts to be used in watches that are 38mm-41mm, expect the enthusiast watch market to really pay attention. There are no technological reasons why it has only been used in large watches as the movement is identical in width to the ETA 2824-2 upon which it is based at 25.6mm (about an inch). So far, the only reason I can think of for Swatch group limiting the use of this movement is that the coveted feature it provides could result in them cannibalising the market for the much more expensive GMT watches you would traditionally have to buy for this functionality.

@@zillsburyy1 i have a thing for all horology. I'm a certified timepiece specialist of Fondation De La Haute Horlogerie. Seiko almost killed off the entire Swiss industry if it wasn't for the Swatch Group(SMH) successful defense with the Swatch brand. And Tissot was part of the SSIH which then merged together with ASUAG and became SMH under emergency protocol(Quartz crisis was enough to led the Swiss close to bankruptcy)arranged by the Swiss Government. So if you know about timepieces and horology then you will appreciate The Swatch Group because if it wasn't for them, all the other luxury Swiss brands you see today will die or be selling fashion clothing. And Seiko although in the end they lost to their own game but they made history and must be respected. Brands like Tissot and Swatch are highly respected by us Swiss people.

You have to include Grand Seiko quartz and mechanicl GMTs to complete this list. lso the watches are giving the Swiss a run for the finish and movrmrnt quality. SBGM221 is on my shopping list.

Since I know you're a Nomos fan, one watch that I love is the Nomos Glashutte Zurich World Time, a watch that's considered a GMT rather than a true world timer. The Omega PO GMT was also on my radar for years...Still is.

Being a pilot, I think the BALL Roadmaster Pilot or Marine is the ultimate true GMT function. Just push a button instead of unscrewing the crown at every location. Best of all is the Lumes; hard to beat the tritium when waking up in a dark hotel room ;-) I have my eye on their Jet-Set model coming out as well.

A quirky choice but the Damasko DK200 is a beautiful GMT with a superhard steel case in a genta-esque design. It has an in-house movement with silicon hairspring, free sprung balance, 2 way winding & ceramic bearings. It's a lot of horology tech for modest money.

The gmt complication is my favorite complication, I got several GMT’s and right now my favorite in my collection is the Mido Ocean Star GMT, it’s an amazing watch, very comfortable, accurate and well constructed. Another favorite in my collection is the Frederique Constant Classic gmt. Very nice video and keep the good work my friend!

@ragetobe
@ragetobe 9 ай бұрын
Most videos featuring GMTs at this price range put CW at the front, it’s nice to see a list without CW mentioned to be honest, it’s time for other brands to get some focus, it was starting to feel like CW was paying all the channels to review their watches. CW does have half the history that most of the brands mentioned here.
