Fun fact: Originally, the villain of the NuWho story 'The Lodger' was Meglos out for revenge. The punchline would've been that the Doctor had completely forgotten him in the intervening centuries, and wouldn't remember him even when prompted, something that Meglos would have taken great offence to. It's a pity this didn't happen because it sounds hilarious.

Fun fact: Sharaz Jek was originally going to be portrayed by David Bowie, but didn't happen because of schedule conflicts. A Doctor Who book called Diamond Dogs later featured Sharaz Jek, and was most likely named as a reference to David Bowie.

Bowie didn’t miss out on Who once but twice. The unproduced Dark Dimensions wanted Bowie to play the main antagonist of Hawkspare(who is very similar to Malcolm McDowell’s Doctor Soren). Bowie was considered for the role of the Master. With the Water of Mars being inspired by his song “Life on Mars” with the space station named after him”Bowie Base One”. Bowie has inspired two cult series. The Tomorrow People and Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes.

I'm a big fan of Image Of the Fendahl, as it's one of the truly creepy (sfx notwithstanding) stories post-Hinchcliffe. There's elements of both Hammer horror and good old H.P. Lovecraft, well told. Leela, as always , kicks several kinds of arse. The glowing skull used to really freak me out, especially when the Doctor's hand gets stuck to it after merely offering it a jelly baby. Which was nice.

Fun fact: Meglos was intended to return in the revived series and face off against the Eleventh Doctor. The producers wanted him to appear in The Lodger with the Doctor not recognising him, but the recent appearance of the Vinvocci in The End of Time which looked similar to him prevented such plans being made. Quite a few of these villains, however, have returned in off-screen stories. Also, speaking of the Daleks-Nazis comparisons, there are thoughts that Nyder somewhat looked like Heinrich Himmler. And a Doctor Who character that ended up being splintered throughout time; why does that sound familiar?

When you see a movie like 'Jeepers Creepers' and the main character comes to a realization that is only partly correct and then the reviewer backs them up without pointing out the obvious error it gets a little annoyinging. When they revealed the license place BEATNGU and the kid pronounces "Beating You", you say ok, that's cool. But later in the movie when you understand the rules, you realize the correct meaning of the plate is "Be Eating You". You can forgive the kid for not realizing it then as he was kind of busy running for his life. The reviewer wasn't under any such constraint and therefore should have come to the correct answer on their own; if they bothered to deep dive the story before reviewing it.

The Doctor removes part of the TARDIS console, and connects it to Sutekh's time corridor, preventing Sutekh reaching 1911, pushing the temporal boundary further and further into the future, to s point where it will take Sutekh longer thsn his Osirian life span to reach Earth, killing him of old age. However, the thermal feedback destroys the time corridor equipment, and starts the fire which destroys the Priory. I have an action figure of The Doctor's Fourth incarnation with the TARDIS control module.

A shame this list doesn't contain Fenric - a Lovecraftian evil as old as the universe - or the deliciously crusty Haemovores. People keep citing Waters of Mars as a favourite, but often overlook the water-based zombie-vampires from Curse of Fenric. However, I will give a point back for including the Kandyman - one of the most polarizing villains. Many can't see beyond the costume, yet he's deliciously evil. An oddly polite but psychotic killer robot, dancing between childlike tantrums and adult appreciation for his cruel handiwork. In fact, Happiness Patrol in general is criminally overlooked.

I know there's a copyright dispute, but why not have The Kandyman uploaded to a Kerblam man and turn the facility into a Saw maze? We need another human villain who just happens to resemble The Doctor. Sutekh needs to be the main villain in a Doctor Who/Torchwood/SJA/Class crossover! Make it a 3 part epic

Kandyman comes back in Big Finish, though. The Eleven (NOT the 11th Doctor, but a renegade time Lord with multiple personalities) builds him a new humanoid body. Oh, and there's a comic called "Heralds of Destruction" where Salamander comes back. We're led to believe that the 3rd Doctor meets the 2nd until the Master tells the Doctor he's been checking the Doctor's time stream and no past version had arrived. Then we suddenly learn it's Salamander who plans to go back in time to Victorian London to offer his future weapons in return for a position of power. I definetely recommend reading this!

I have a problem with calling any old villain we only get to see once as a best One-Off Classic since their history, motivation and final goals all differ. I think this list should be used to describe those characters that we've only seen in Dr. Who the one time, but their goals were such that the Doctor had no choice but to destroy them. 1 - Sutekh - without a doubt. His power, hatred and paranoia would have lead him to at least enslave the entire galaxy if not destroy all life in it (Pyramids of Mars) 2 - The Fendahl - a being that feeds on life energy of all beings, including it's own kind and would never stop until it was alone in the galaxy (Image of the Fendahl) 3 - BOSS - the super computer that ran the Global Chemicals Oil plant that resulted in the pollution and creation of the giant infectious maggots (The Green Death) 4 - Yssgaroth - Gallifreyan 'Great Vampires' (The State of Decay) 5 - The Rutan - Even though they are involved in an eternal war with the Sontarens, we've only ever seen them once (The Horror of Fang Rock) 6 - Eldrad - immortal silicon-based lifeform that was bent on ruling the galaxy and would start by subjugating the earth (The Hand of Fear) 7 - Harrison Chase - Rich, ecological activist and procuror of rare or unique plants. (The Seeds of Doom) that's all I can think of for now.

Wasn’t “The Happiness Patrol” the episode which effectively killed off Doctor Who in the 80’s? I’m not saying the Kandyman doesn’t belong on this list. But that assessment of the episode certainly paints a rosey picture of it!

Doctor Who was killed off because BBC executives (notably Michael Grade) flat out hated the show. They tried to get rid of the show earlier which is why there was an 18-month hiatus between Colin Baker's seasons. Only public outcry got the show back on the air after the hiatus. But it came back with a majorly reduced budget and a mere 14 half hour episodes per season. And Michael Grade personally ordered the firing of Colin Baker.

@@bryancorrell3689 When Michael Grade went on Room 101, he said explicitly, with a clip for reference, that it was the Kandyman which made him want to cancel Doctor Who. I expect some things in Colin Baker’s run also led him to feel that the writing was too bad to keep it viable. But I know what you’re saying. Grade rode roughshod over the programme, but somehow still expected it to do better. The BBC created this institution, but that doesn’t mean they should have treated it with the contempt which they know the public would hate to see the Beeb, as an institution itself, treated.

Sharaz Jek was undoubtedly the best ever villain. He wasn't a stereotype villain he was a raving psychopath driven half mad by being boiled in a mud by the treacherous Morgus. He was highly intelligent and an aesthete and his attraction to Peri was disturbing. A tragic hateful character.
