My Son graduated High school 5 years. ago. I researched watches, including this channel, with the simple goal of wanting to give him a gift that would be respectable. At the time I could buy a Seiko monster 2nd gen for $199. I got one for him. I got one for me... because, no more child support.... i told him if he wanted to go to school call me, I will pay you but not your mom. That was another story. Anyway, This got both of us hooked on watches. Those watches have skyrocked in value. but the cool part is the simple fact that neither of us will ever sell because of the more emotional value that lies beneath. I feel really good as a parent giving my children an item they don't want to sell, but if they had to, the would be taken care of. That is important to me.

You're a young man. My advice don't get into the cheap or low end "entry" watch trap. It's better to have one (Rolex, Grand Seiko, Nomos, Omega, JLC, any higher end Swiss...in due time) than to have a bunch of TAG's, Squale, Christopher Ward, Seiko, or unknown $300 - $1500 brands. They won't last and will not hold value. This mistake and trap becomes apparent when you take a "affordable" watch for service. For example : Squale = $300... cost to service $250 - $350! More than what the watch is worth. If you want something that will last, and get a great bang per buck. Go for pre-owned watches like Speedmaster, Seamaster Omega, Breitling, vintage Date Just, Explorer I pre-owed Rolex, Pre-owned Panerai Luminor. All between $2000 - $5000 tops, full kit and mint. You will thank me and be glad once you get one. No rush, just enjoy your first watch collection, keep it, take care of your beginner watches, and work/save for that luxury grail. Once you're well and ready for one.
@Zeratsu5 жыл бұрын
@@Milofchg and to buy a vintage watch for 2000-5000$ you should be experienced like an expert to avoid any Frankenstein watches, and there would be a lot of risks rather than buying some of the new Seiko 200$ for example, and it would be a lot cheap to maintain it rather than vintage one, and i believe vintage one would be needed to be maintained more frequently than a new one. You talk from your own "belltower", no one would thank you for that.

I'd add the Citizen NY0040 to that list! It was my first "real" watch when I was 18, and even after 20 more watches added to my collection, it still remains one of my favorites. It's the best alternative to a SKX, too!

Da A I wouldn’t recommend Vostok for someone who is just starting out with Mechanicals. The Movement and crown can be temperamental plus build quality is not really up to the standard of the watches mentioned in video. I’ve previously owned two Vostoks and I’m fond of the brand 🤙🏻

I was just thinking the same as I watched the video... I am really new to the hobby, a couple of year or so, and as of now my collection is limited to casio (f91w, ae1200whd, gwx5600, all hydro modded) So I decided it was time for my first automatic, was ready for a seiko skx007, then discovered vostok a couple weeks ago. So I researched them, really amazing history, and I am currently waiting for two amphibia to arrive :) one from meranom, one from zenitar, around 70-80$ each, really glad I found out about the "ak-47 of watches"!

I don't know how good it is as a diver at less than $150. Now 200 metres means that you can dive a bit but more than 3-4 metres and you're in trouble. Thing is that mechanical watches are quite high maintenance so I wouldn't recommend them to beginners.
@daa34175 жыл бұрын
zaco 2121 If you actually do some research on the design you’ll see the engineering behind it, it has numerous advantages over the typical case style the way the case back and the case back gasket works is the main point. I’ve seen comments on the “temperamental crown”, the only reason you think it’s temperamental is because you don’t understand how it’s designed. The Vostok crown was designed this way, the crown itself is not physically connected to the stem this insulates the delicate movement from shock if you were to drop or smack the watch on the crown. Which is why it feels so wobbly and loose you must put outward pressure on the crown to engage the stem clutch to wind, once you understand that it works like any other watch. Though I do agree that Vostok’s QC on average is lesser than Citizen or Seiko. I personally get a lot of enjoyment out of knowing it’s a proper military-diver design, I can say with impunity that you won’t find a true military mechanical design for less than double and those will be vintage pieces with all that implies. This is a magnificent article on the ‘Amphibia’s’ engineering. www.60clicks.com/vostok-amphibia-scuba-dude-review/

So does 2019 seiko, there is no way you can contest that. And just as I said you pay more for the Seikos, I have something like half a dozen Vostoks and I’ve full admitted twice now that indeed the average fit and finish is below average seiko none of my watches has had a single quality issue. Meranom is in my experience highly professional and they seem to do a good deal to weed out bad watches so you don’t have to, in 6 seikos I’ve had at least one alignment issue. The only thing I would call an issue is the bracelets, the worst seiko bracelet is 10x better than any of the OE bracelets that came on my Vostoks but it’s not an issue because they almost always have an option to save $10 and not get the bracelet. I have no reason to bullshit, Vostok fit and finish is slightly below current Seiko but the prices reflect this and there’s no reason to not recommend them. If you have EXPERIENCE that makes you believe otherwise I’ll hear it, but if it’s just internet echo chamber garbage why not get one yourself at less than $100 what’s to loose?

Vostok Amphibian. The definitive beater diver when you're on budget. My question for a following video: - a list of watches available both in ladies and gents sizes for a gift to a couple.
@eddieguyvh47655 жыл бұрын
I love the amphibian! But I'd never call it a beater. My father owned 3 or 4 of them, and they all broke down within 6 to 12 months... His 20 year old Citizen promaster automatic still runs perfectly. I recommend the 2415B movement over the 2416B, that's what's inside my amphibian (no date complication). It being simpler seems to make it a bit more reliable ;)

Luca Simoncini My only quibble with Vostok is that their stems and crown tubes are prone to corrosion after exposure to salt water. Change out the stock parts for around $20.
