@@norbertsoltesz1012 to me animation, including facial animation, is on the cusp of graphics vs game design. Lighting, environments, textures, weapons, armor, it was just the facial animation, voice acting, and writing. And two of those aren't even technical issues.

I feel that doom 2 to doom 3 should have been huge on paper, but interestingly really wasn’t. The harsh unrealistic real time shadows almost looked like the old sector lighting from doom 2 even. And so many textures in Doom 3 were incredibly low res, a texel per inch like quake, and they made the whole game look worse. The art style of the original was so iconic that it made up for its terrible resolution a lot.

Dragon Age 2 was rushed out in, a little less than, 18 months and was technically an Alpha game that "Enormous Avarice" made Bioware release unfinished, it was a working/playable build so EA made them release it. Inquisition was given a full development time.

Only because Doom 2 to Doom 3 almost wasn’t a jump in graphics at all. And I mean that. Stencil shadows look almost as bad as sector lighting and in many places the texture resolution was as bad as original quake.

@memebot64905 жыл бұрын
@@soylentgreenb Yeah, no. That's totally not true. Doom 3 was an insane jump
@soylentgreenb5 жыл бұрын
@@memebot6490 Oh yes. For 2003, Doom 3 had garbage graphics. Even Half-life and its mods had better lighting than Doom 3 using the ancient quake engine. Low res, but soft and realistic lightmaps approximating GI by pre-computing with radiosity (in some mods, like Natural selection, it still looks descent if you can stomach the ridiculously low quality textures). Doom 3's shadows were so uniquely awful that it actually looked more realistic, not to mention prettier, if you disabled them. Disabling the key selling point of the game, made it look much nicer. The lighting still wasn't good without reflections; doom 3 didn't bother faking reflections with an ambient term very much. The shadows also cost so much performance that enemies had to be made gross super-low-poly coneheads (check pictures from the time, not from the remade doom 3 BFG). Every surface was shaded like plasticine. The monsters, the walls, the floors; everything. Most things in real life are close to perfectly diffuse; only a small number of things are highly reflective and even then, usually only in parts. specular surfaces must be used sparingly or it looks like you smeared everything in vegetable oil. This was a grungy, dirty space ship where most things should not be shiny and most of the few things that should be shiny are just the clean bits of metal in amongst the dirt and grime. The game looked ridiculous without a specular map.
