You forgot the Thomas Handy Rye. at around 130 proof it is quite interesting. I was in New Orleans over Christmas and bought some Sazerac handles for $39. 750 were 19. As an addendum concerning spicy food - it is also not a good idea to drink Bourbon THEN have very spicy food. I had "Thai hot" green curry after sampling several Bourbons and it hit me waaaaay harder than usual. I assume the liquor strips away the protective mucous lining and leaves you way more vulnerable. The back of my throat literally felt like it was on fire.

Love this video. Great summary of the line up. I also love the premise of the channel. So glad I found it. Btw the thing about whiskey in America having to be age stated if under 4 years, that only applies of it is labeled as "Straight" whiskey. Straight whiskey must be atleast 2 years old and, if it is under 4 years, must be age stated. So sorry if this was already said, I couldn't find it in the comments. Cheers and keep up the great work!
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
Correct. I have this standard post put together when people ask the question: There are three age statement laws in the US: 1. Straight is 2+ years, but 2-4 years requires an age statement and above 4+ years the age statement is optional. 2. Bottled In Bond is 4+ years and the age statement is optional 3. Anything labeled as whiskey in the US 0-4 years old must have an age statement, and above 4+ years the age statement is optional.

Wow - a powerful ending to the video!! As for the video in general, this is one of the most informative videos on bourbon that I've ever seen!! I have tried some of these from this video and Buffalo Trace is one of my most favorite distillers. The MSRPs you quote surprise me, either due to my area or my retailers ability to mark up. For example, the Buffalo Trace bottle you said had a MSRP of $20 something and I paid $50 something!! I couldn't find it and when I did they said that was the price! Oh well. I enjoyed it. That is what counts. But, yowzah.
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of things that affect price like shipping, taxes, wholesaler/retailer margin, but if you bought a bottle of regular BT at $50 that means the store is marking up rare bottles more than they need to. We call them price gouge stores. It sucks because customers don't know that the distillery isn't getting any of the extra money. BT made around $10 on that bottle. The wholesaler made something like $4.25, and the retailer was supposed to make $5.75, but instead is making $35.75 and affecting brand perception without the brand owner getting any benefit. I have a series of videos on this.

Fun fact about eagle rare used to say single barrel but blended 2 barrels. The regulators came knocking and they took the designation off the bottle
@BourbonRealTalk8 ай бұрын
I knew that, but I have never been able to understand the facts of the situation. The official story was that some bottles would get more than one barrel in them because the bottling lines had not been emptied. Given that they have several other single barrels it seems unlikely that they would have bought a separate bottling line to do ER that didn't comply.

Generally a large retailer will have a relationship with a wholesaler who is essentially a clearing house. The wholesaler in this scenario doesn't warehouse product or have field reps pushing it to the general public. They get it in from the producer and put it on a truck to the retailer. In exchange for this "pass through" service the wholesaler accepts a much lower margin, and in some cases a per case flat fee. It is essentially free money for the wholesaler because they bear none of the risk. The retailer and or the wholesaler then goes to a "producer" and offers them guaranteed volume with no risk, in exchange for a low profit margin. The producer either has to have their own liquid and be willing to sacrifice it, or they have to contract to get it from someone else. This all works because major producers have brand/price expectations in the market. Let's say 1792 is going to sell for around $30 a bottle, they could sell it and make their normal margin, but if gets put in a Chestnut Farms bottle that can be sold for $50. So the producer either maintains margin and the independent bottler allows it because the end line price allows for it, or the bottler works at a low margin for volume. So let's say in a normal situation a bottle was going to go from the producer at $30 to the wholesaler. The producer's cost is around $19.50. The wholesaler markes it up after adding in state taxes and shipping and they sell the bottle to retailers for around $48. Then the retailer marks it up and sells it to you at $64. In the "house brand" scenario the producer sells for $23 to the wholesaler instead of $30. The wholesaler sells the bottle to the retailer at $34 instead of $48. The retailer still sells the bottle for $64, but their margin is 47% instead of the 25% they would normally get. Hope that makes sense.
@jasonpribyl39162 жыл бұрын
Greta video however you misspoke several times. Straight whiskey needs to be aged 2 years minimum not 4. Bottled in bond is 4 years minimum, easy to mix up the different requirements on the different requirements
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
I made a lot of mistakes in this video, but this was not one of them. I said it is a straight and then I went on to say any whiskey in the US under 4 years must have an age statement. This rule applies to ALL whiskey and not just BIB.

Buffalo Trace in my area is damn $55!! And you ain’t get n Pappy or Wl Weller so it don’t matter what they taste like. If old charter is same as BT, I’m buying OC!

Eagle Rare, not technically a Single Barrel is a continuous fill bourbon without changing out the hose system from one Barrel to the next! Its almost a Single Barrel
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
I know they changed the label when they switched from hand bottling to an automated system. I was not aware that the system loads one barrel at a time.

You said the Van Winkle msrp was comical because you'll never see them at this price Outside the lower priced benchmarks, I've never seen any of these bottles for msrp. I had to make sure I wasn't watching a video from 5 years ago

Every market is different, and some states have high taxes that push prices up, but all of these prices were found by searching the websites of my local stores Spec's, Goody Goody, and Total Wine. If you want to verify you can go to those sites, change your location to 75078 zip code, and look them up.

A couple of your graphics show a different mash bill number than you stated. For example you covered Blantons in the mash bill #2 section but the graphic stated it was #1. That was true with at least one other #2 product. Can you clarify. Thanks.
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
The second graphic was supposed to say Mashbill 2. I didn't see it until after we had published. Once we publish we can't make changes. Sorry. I also made a lot of mistakes in this video, so please read the disclaimer in the video description for all the correct information.

One small correction. Bowman is owned by Sazerac so they don’t “buy” the bourbon from Buffalo Trace. But GREAT video like always!!

I am kinda curious what you think of the typical rickhouse aging of them, because I had heard some of the stuff on top, of Taylor and Eagle Rare in particular, is that Taylor is typically a high floor (in the rickhouse) whiskey, and Eagle is typically a low floor whiskey
@BourbonRealTalk8 ай бұрын
Likely because of age. Taylor is 6-8 years, and ER is 10, so it many need the lower floors to get to the higher age without being over oaked.

Casks make all the difference, as a general statement about fine spirits overall. The new make spirit is a key aspect, truly. But the aging drives most all the final smell and taste. And aging occurs in the barrel. The quality of the barrel is THE over/under factor, ultimately, in the finished product. The mashbill is the first driver, the rest of the journey occurs over time in the cask.
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
The interesting thing is the casks are not different between weller and van winkle. They just have to taste them during aging to determine what to do with each barrel.

How do you come up with the prices on Paps? Whenever I try to get a bottle of it it’s up to the thousands for the bottle. Even though I want to see if it’s really up to the hype I will not spend $1,000.00 to $6,000.00 for any bottle of bourbon. Yet recently purchased a bottle of Blantons straight from the barrel for $150.00.
@BourbonRealTalk Жыл бұрын
The prices I list in my videos are MSRP, but many stores mark them up 10-20X what they should be. I love Blanton's SFTB. That is above retail, but I would buy a bottle if I found one at that price.

Eagle Rare *is* a single barrel product, they just can't call it that as they changed the bottling method so you might get bits of two barrels.
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
A number of people have pointed this out. I have researched and it makes zero sense to me. They have a single barrel line that is compliant. They have a small batch line that is compliant. Why would they buy some sort of hybrid line that isn't compliant and also lose the value of a SiB label. None of this makes any sense, and I wonder how much is marketing hype.
@MatthewJoyceAUS2 жыл бұрын
@@BourbonRealTalk I just did some further research on this and have to apologize as I appear to be in the wrong. The official word (at least from someone who spoke to Susannah Hubler at BT) is that Eagle Rare is now a batch product, although a much smaller batch than Buffalo Trace. Sorry, I thought I knew what I was talking about but turns out I didn't! Apologies once again.
@BourbonRealTalk2 жыл бұрын
@@MatthewJoyceAUS Don't apologize. You are probably the 10th person to point this out to me. When I did research I was confused too, and I felt stupid. Then I thought, if they have a single barrel bottling line, and they have a batch product bottling line, and they understand the value of a single barrel statement, then why would they buy a 3rd bottling line that eliminates the possibility of a single barrel statement, but isn't as efficient as their batched product bottling line, that also devalues the product by forcing them to drop the single barrel statement. That is when I got skeptical.
