I love it when people in the comments point out better options. Just means they don't understand how Demo likes to play. For example: yes, Moldervine Reclamation and Korvold are better than Dragon's Appeasement. However, they are removal magnets that put a target on your back, whereas Dragon's Appeasement looks like a card your opponents won't remove because it might lock you out. Remember, don't make yourself the threat at the table. If you can easily think of how bad some of these cards are, especially permanents, then your opponents will, too, giving them a longer lifespan and greater upside if your opponents underestimate their value.
@SuppaichuАй бұрын
Yeah, though if i see you playing that card my new objective in the game is locking you out with it xD
@gabrielkopp9248Ай бұрын
@@chefpaddie3771 there’s validity to that argument, however it only lasts up until a certain point. If your overall card quality is low enough you will just never be able to “turn the corner” in mid-to-late game and actually secure the win. Yes, you can avoid some attention by playing clunky cards, but you have to be able to hit the gas and start doing powerful things at some point. The very strategy that makes you not a threat early on also undercuts your ability to have a finishing state. Of course players are welcome to build at whatever power level they want, but I would argue that 90+ percent of players will get quickly disinterested in their decks if they aren’t accomplishing an effective gameplan in a reasonable amount of time
@KryptnytАй бұрын
It is just a more expensive card that does the same thing as other cards do but with an additional drawback. If you want this card in your deck it's because you want more redundancy for the effect. I wouldn't tell someone to take Grizzly Bears out of their deck to put Grey Ogre in just so that they won't be targeted! Dragon Appeasement is just as likely to do the same stuff Korvald and Moldervine Reclamation do, or Fecundity, if you want to take risks. It still makes you a target. It just costs more to play it. Wanna be a target a turn later? Sandbag your engine for a turn rather than making yourself pay more mana for it. To be fair to Appeasement, it skips your draw step, too- you can turn that into an advantage, by, uh, "look at me not take this 1 damage from my Mana Vault!" Okay, maybe that's not so great. Moldervine can be negated by Leyline of the Void things and Appeasement gets around that, so that's cool.

Dreams of the Dead is even absurder in a flicker deck! You can flicker the revived creature, and it will actually return to the battlefield, as by the card rulings: "If [an exile effect] later returns the creature card to the battlefield (as Oblivion Ring or Flickerwisp might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence." One of the strongest cards in my Esper flicker deck.

Funny thing about +2/+2 counters or any other non-standard stat affecting counters are that they're not negated by standard stat affecting counters. For example, a creature with a +2/+2 counter on it gets two -1/-1 counters, both stay on it and they don't cancel out each other.

I love the Dragon Throne, but the main deck I have it in might be the most obvious home for it: Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer. For those unaware, Greensleeves is a 3GG */* whose power and toughness are equal to the number of lands you control and she makes a 3/3 badger token on landfall. So make a ton of badgers and boost them all by the number of lands you control in your landfall deck. The repeatability aspect of the throne usually doesn’t come into play.
@EvertfromNederlandАй бұрын
Your last sentence is the reason I took it out of my green deck. It's just an expensive and cumbersome overrun effect. But the way Demo talked about it makes me want to put it in some random deck like he said where my commander never attacks. Pretty neat.

Dragon Throne of Tarkir 4:05 looks interesting. Ideally, that could work in my Hamza deck. My wincon is combat damage from big creatures with overruns and trample. Hamza is a 5/5, could be even bigger because he might have +1/+1 counters on him, and I don't always attack with him, since he might not have trample. My only hesitations are 1) the mana cost, 4 to cast and 3 to equip then another 2 for the ability; and 2) Hamza is not usually a big target but this equipment would definitely make him a target, I think. And I don't have a lot of protection for him, since he's not really a target usually. Interesting pick, though. I would like to try it out. I like that it's repeatable and gives trample.

For Dubious Challenge you could also run it in a steal strategy or a blink strategy. Roon of the Hidden Realm, for example, can use its ability to exile the creature the opponent took with Dubious Challenge. And with stealing, your opponent will obviously want to take the bigger/higher value creature like Craterhoof Behemoth. So, you let them have it and then use one of the many red steal cards to steal it and use it for yourself.

I don't think that would actually work. Library of Leng's effect cares about effects that make you discard, but Dream Halls lets you discard as an alternate cost to cast a spell. Unfortunately, that means it won't trigger the Library because paying a cost isn't an effect.

@hiygamer definitely. Magic is a lot of fun but it can definitely get confusing at times when all it takes is a one word difference to completely change how a card functions. I see a LOT of this with red decks using impulse mechanics and missing the fact that some of them say "may PLAY until end of turn" vs "may CAST until end of turn", and realize too late they are gonna lose that much needed land drop on a "may CAST" impulse spell.

Dragon Throne of Tarkir…costs a total of 9 mana for a do nothing until you paid the other required costs to accomplish anything of 1: Getting the big creature out and equipped without dying to this televised play and 2: Then also getting a large board out. It’s a very bad card, unless you are going for low power even on a budget throwing in something like Graaz would do you better. For specifically game-ending effects, striking out of nowhere is more important than the installment costs that if anything allow your opponents to plan when to kill either the main creature or the artifact, which I may remind you are the two most vulnerable card types.
@MrJpurvis620Ай бұрын

I agree that it is a pretty high cost, but you need to read the card again because it does give trample. I have it in a Chishiro deck, and while it's not the best card by far... It does help you win fast with a decent board of tokens and/or other modified creatures.
@Bongus_BubogusАй бұрын
@@Koios90 I did miss the trample, but that’s the only thing I’ve forgotten. That just goes to show how rare the trigger goes off in actual games. In the last decade, out of around 70~80+ times across many players and decks I’ve seen it played at even very casual settings (though most have phased it out in the last few years due to every color getting better wincons) when I do my touring of the USA, it’s only won twice. Locally, I don’t see it. If you are able to play against dead fish for opponents, then most cards like this will work fine too 👍 and in that case play anything it doesn’t have to be this card in particular.

Nope, sorry, it’s not, full stop
@chefpaddie3771Ай бұрын
I like how the first two parts of what you call the "cost" are just the way you play a Talrand deck. The "cost" is more like playing it for four while still holding up mana, equipping it for three while still holding up mana, then activating it for two every turn. All the while protecting that board against three opponents for three turns. The cost is steep, but the payoff is legit if you play it right.
