Best family car I've ever had is a van, Transit Custom Combi, life has never been so easy. Sooo much room inside and enough room in the back for anything you'll ever need.

I'm with you with estates. Bought my first a couple of months before first child born and have had one in the family (variously Subaru Legacy, BMW 5 Series, BMW 3 Series, Peugeot 406, Mercedes E-Class and currently an Audi A4) some 23 years later... Hard to imagine not having one TBH and don't see the point of other large cars. Hugely practical and usually drive well.

I love an estate car for practicality, I’ve got an e91 BMW 330d which I picked up a couple years back for under £4k and I’ve put 25k miles on it. Love the thing! Great vids mate keep it up!

Quite like the Saab 9-3 the most out of all of these cars. But I wonder would a 2.0T petrol convertible be able to keep up with the likes of the Mk5 Golf GTI or EOS 2.0 TSI?

I have the A6 3.0 TDI V6 saloon and worth mentioning is that you can put a stage 1 remap on it for £200 and you've got an instant 295bhp / 600nm machine for your money. Plus ridiculous as it sounds if you get the pre-DPF version and get rid of the rear silencers (£150 for replacement pipes) it sounds like a GTR.

Although I do love estate cars, for a young family they can be impractical. Sounds crazy, I know, but hear me out. Having to regular do the school run at a busy school, estate cars are low and long and when you have to get your kids out of car seats and also try and find a big enough parking spot, estate cars, I’ve found just don’t cut it. We now have an SUV (Ford Kuga). It has a high enough ride height so you can see ahead for that elusive parking space and get your young children out the car without breaking your back. It’s also a lot shorter than an estate car, so parking is made a lot easier as well. You can see why parents opt for SUVs on school runs in todays motoring world ☺️

Here are 2 cars I would seriously say fits the bill for me. Firstly thethe a6 allroad V6 diesel why? Faster than any diesel SUV, more interior room for passengers plus enough boot space for doing house removals. Then the BMW 5 series again in estate V8 petrol, best family car no question

I've always like the idea of an estate. Funny enough had a discussion with the Mrs on our next car, she wanted a CX-5 and I wanted a 3series touring. Her friend said I needed to think about kids and dogs so should get the CX-5 not knowing what an estate was. Anyways we compromised and got the CX-5 in the end. However I do now have a F10 530d as a daily (couldn't find any F11 with the 3L engine for my budget).

Perfect family car has to be an SUV. Driven new BMW X5/7's and Mercedes GLA/GLC's Lovely places to be and so much tech in them, comfortable and plenty of room !
@ApothecaryTerry2 жыл бұрын
Nah, estates are better. Rory Reid on the Autotrader channel did a stat-by-stat comparison of the GLE and an E class estate. The estate is cheaper, roomier, faster, more efficient, better to drive, comfier, etc. The only stat SUVs always win on is having a 7 seat option, in which case they do make sense. Depending on the model boot space can be better in the SUV instead too, but the margins are irrelevant in either direction for that stat- certainly not enough to offset the disadvantages of all that extra height and weight. The actual perfect family car is what I had as a courtesy car earlier this year- the Panamera 4S e-Hybrid Sport Turismo. Very practical, very comfy and also fun to drive - it's got 560hp which is never a bad thing. Equipment levels can be awesome too, although even by German standards Porsche are miserly with standard kit so you have to pay extra if you want doors on it. As an added bonus, your kids will be entertained for hours trying to remember the stupidly long name 😄

Perfect type of family car is clearly a mid-engined sports car. The rest of the family can walk home 😂 Estates really though, although personally I've always liked the way saloons look. In either form, the 9-3 with the 2.8 turbo appeals as a sleeper.

@ApothecaryTerry2 жыл бұрын
1stly, congratulations! I'm looking for something very similar (car, not baby, I don't have one on the way). The obvious choice is an i30N, if you want a mad engine then a Pug 308 GTi or if you want more practicality albeit with a lot less fun, a Golf R estate/Cupra Leon 300 ST. Could get an FK2 but it'll shake your baby's brains out and an FK8 is more expensive plus it's boring on public roads. Of course if you don't mind E92 running costs or more there are plenty more options - Panamera, S6, even a Flying Spur...but then presumably you wouldn't be selling the E92 if you wanted to run something like that!

@ApothecaryTerry2 жыл бұрын
@@Warich0d0 With those criteria you've chosen already - M140i. Worth driving an RS3 too, slightly nicer interior and even more special engine but the understeer is real. V60 Polestar also worth a look, same size as the M3 really. A45 is great if you like truly awful interiors and an engine with all the power and none of the fun 😆 It exists though, I just hate them, you might not. Smaller than the M3 and auto are the most restrictive criteria there really. Cutting either of those out really opens up your options. In my current car hunt I'm driving a bunch of stuff I'm not even seriously considering just to see all the possibilities, plus it's a fun way to spend an hour occasionally! I reckon you'll end up in an M140i though, it's the obvious choice and with good reason...they're a riot.
@Warich0d02 жыл бұрын
@@ApothecaryTerry I’ve briefly driven one before I had the m3 and was good but just not sure if it’ll feel like a real step down. Rs3 was also on the radar driven one years ago but didn’t get to push it, special engine but just don’t know if it will be fun enough for me. Money wise slightly more as well but they hold money v well also
