@@TristanBehrens maybe you’re thinking of the 135i, 125i is the N52 which is one of the last naturally aspirated engines BMW made. They’ve been known to last well over 200k miles. Weak points are water pump and cheap gaskets that can leak oil on higher mileage cars, all relatively cheap to fix though

I picked up an Octavia VRS (petrol) estate as my second car and it's literally the perfect car for me. It has so much boot space for a smaller estate car which is perfect for my work and costs about £1300 to insure on business insurance. Its super fun to drive and has lots of potential for more power and pretty good aftermarket support since its an MQB car

Can we have a list on tunable cars under 10k. E.g. a BMW 116i can be snagged for as little as 6k and a stage 1 software map will take it from 136bhp to 220bhp with a 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds give or take. 1.4 twincharged polo isn’t as bad as people say; VW revised them in late 2012 which resolved the known issues. Yes it’s still not perfect but much cheaper insurance and a little cheaper to buy. 2013/2014 models are solid

I’m 22, I was considering a Golf GTI but went with a Leon Cupra 290, it was better equipped, faster, cheaper to insure equivalent to the Golf, and I love it. It may not have the same “heritage” as the Golf but it’s certainly a head turner and definitely a car that any young driver should consider in my opinion.

I drive a Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4t 155bhp at 21 insurance is around £800 for me and car is fairy nippy the only complaint I have is it’s not too practical only coming in 3 doors and being 6’3 isn’t a problem as there is room for the driver but having a 4th passenger can be a struggle, you can also pick them up for way cheaper than anything else on the list, mine set me back £5000 having only 21,000 miles on the clock

@Dan Mitchell it's based on the same chassis. The mk7 golf r and the cupra mk3 share the same engine and turbo. The main difference is cupras are fwd rather than 4wd. Traction is an issue on anything other than dry weather but you can eliminate most of that with good tyres and a dogbone insert. Also from a rolling start a cupra will beat a golf r due it weighing less because of it only being fwd. They don't have as nice of an interior being on the bottom of the VAG ladder but if u get a facelift mk3 it's not bad. Pre facelift interior is abit rubbish. I wouldn't say it's better than a golf r. Golf r is much more better as a daily thanks to its 4wd. But the cupra is way cheaper when u compare prices and alot of people say alot more fun and characteristic since its easier to break traction

So i was 6 month driver when I got my A1 122ps, on finance and paid 1800 insurance. I had no idea that ncd would be 30% after forst year so I kinda wasted money. But im 21 in 1 month and I will get ncd. I was looking for 420d m sport or a5 s line, up £13k or £15k if in really good condition. The quotes I had were around 1500-1900. Are there any other simmilar cars, you would recommend that would give me lower insurance cost? I looked for 1.8 a3 s line and leon fr, they were cheaper bud damn i love the 4 series look. I would prefer to stay within kinda premium badge or a vw golf, kia ceed

You can get a 208 GTi Prestige for less than 10k with good mileage. The 2015+ models are a lot more reliable and come with a polished crank and they’re better equipped than half these cars too. 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and same Mini JCW engine. I had the pre face lift and it was so much fun and beat a lot of cars like the Fiesta ST’s and could even keep up with 350z’s and C63’s round housing estates

Got the Polo GTI and while it looks great (especially inside) it's nowhere near as fun as the JCW Mini. Arbarth even more fun drive but plasticy and poor quality build. The supercharged Jaguar is classy and QUICK but absolute money pit for a 21-year old who will not be able to afford to fuel, maintain and service. Wouldn't touch a classic Lotus Elan (Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious) - superb looking but not fast and big challenge to find a good one that's for sale. The MX5 beats the Elan in every department. Best all-round is the MX5 or VRS

2016 Stage 2 Polo Gti here 265bph. Will leave a stock Golf R for dead. Most common issues on these is a coolant leak that almost all will need and its £500+ to fix and suspension bushes. Had ours 3 years no other issue. Dont even think about remapping without an uprated clutch, so its not a cheap car to modify, even in the manual. The stock clutch is made of paper unfortunately. Ours has everything it needs apart from a bigger turbo to go 400+ hp. Unfortunately its not mine, but my partners. Lovely little pocket rocket. I plan to have it off her when she wants to move on and have it as a track car. An LSD, bigger brakes and a good suspension set up and not many things will be faster on track.

My MK2 Golf GTI was £600 to insure at age 22, my current C Class (only a 2.1 diesel but still 170bhp) is £700 and would run rings around my old GTI. The Merc is also super comfortable and has heated leather seats, armrests, aircon, cruise and other comforts for when you don’t want to boot it.

My Mini Cooper was a big money pit, . The interior faded and peeled. We lost loads on it with things failing or falling off, we just missed out on a massive bill, as the spark plugs where covered in oil. The Mini main dealer had to have the car back 3 TIMES for the same fault within 5 weeks of buting it from them. They ended up going from a leaking aircon pipe to having to swap out the pump etc due to their Laurel and Hardy technicians. We would recommend the Honda Civic Type S, funky interior and a great owners club.

I bought a Cooper with 85k miles in November, it blew a spark plug 2 weeks in, then 2 weeks later the main coolant pipe, thermostat and water pump went and now it’s head gasket’s gone. Very fun to drive but they’re so unreliable

Wouldn't go for any of those. Just bought my second car, at 19, a BMW 123D for £5000. 2L i4 diesel with 204bhp, 400nm standard. Insurance for the year with 2 years NCD was £900 for the entry option or £980 for the premium insurance from the same company. Offers good fuel economy and if I get bored a stage 1 remap takes it 265/500. Handling is excellent and it's a joy to drive.

@@CarsWithJB I'd take a 981 over a 718 every day of the week! GTS 4.0 might be an exception, but I certainly wouldn't pay more than double to get one- I still reckon the 981S sounds better anyway. Main reason for switching is because most of my journeys are on motorways and I'll be doing some 3-4 hour journeys for work soon so any Cayman or 911 just has too much road noise for that. The 308 GTi is a clear favourite at the moment, only hot hatch that had the right balance of fun and refinement. Wouldn't mind the lower running costs too, I have big plans so want to save as much as possible for a few years!
