My dad has had an S80 since 2011 (only covered about 38,000 miles due to him being offshore). Bought it brand new with D5 engine, and in my opinion a brilliant car that’s incredibly comfortable and, although we sadly don’t have the V8, still fairly nippy in terms of performance. Definitely a very underrated car.

Sleeper wise, my favourite has got to be any R Volvo, it’s hard to not like them.. though for 3 grand either one of the higher performance 2.0 saab 93s or 2.3 saab 95s, or an 850 T5. I absolutely love our T5, it’s brilliant. Nothing like having an S audi or a VXR up your backside and then leaving them for dust in a 26 year old brick and it sounds ace. It was a bargain too, sub 1k a couple of years ago and now are edging closer to 3k - when you can find one.

Immediately thinking S-Type with this category, great to see it's there. Best bit about it is the CATS suspension system; I've rinsed a fair few beemers and mercs down the rough lanes and old A roads with mine. My dad used to have a first gen CLK that he bought in 2009 for absolute peanuts, set his personal speed record in that rocket.

Bought a 2001 lexus ls430 18 months ago and just sold it (for £400 more than i paid for it) as I needed an estate. An absolutely wonderful machine, creamy smooth, powerful and reliable. Cheap to service but as expected economy isn't the best 20-25 running about, more on a run. In my opinion, the most complete car for beer money.

Volvos are definitely sleeper cars no doubts about it. The older S40/S60/S80 models all sell for quite cheap, they are really reliable and still give you that executive feel to it. My dad has a friend that owned pretty old S80, with over 300K KM on it...The fact that Yamaha helped designing the engine really helped with the overall reliability of the company. Also, lets not forget that the higest mileage car on the planet currently still driving with its original motor is a Volvo P1800 and it seems like Volvo still has that reliable feel to it.

Even newer Volvos are faster than people think. I went to buy a 3 Series not long ago but instead came home in a V60 because although it had the same size engine it was not only more practical but faster and more BHP than the BMW. i have an eos. i love it.mine is the 1.4tsi but i had it mapped and get 201bhp and 301nm torque.mine is the same red as the one in this video.and yeh the roof does leak in heavy rain but i feel if you want a convertable you have to expect leaks,just like if you want a super rapid sports car you have to expect bad mpg.only problem i have is i do attract the attention of golf rs's,gtis.fabia rs,s and seat cupras.although i have held my own and kept up with these from behind, i rarely outpace them if im in front.so most raceboys know that this isnt a sleeper and is worthy of a race

@@CarsWithJB No more Volvo love from me. Volvo was nice enough to replace my driver airbag so it would not kill me. Unfortunately, the stitched leather steering wheel centre is also a part of the airbag module. They replaced it with a CHEAP PLASTIC cover. Being behind the wheel of my V70R used to feel special. No longer. I'll give Volvo the time to make good. Until then, am looking at other cars to replace it. No more Volvos for me. I wonder if Ford would have been as crass as the current Chinese owners.

I agree with you : i bought my dream sleeper last summer, it is a 2015 Skoda Octavia VRS TSI Estate, with the genuinely bonkers Golf GTI 220PS engine, with manual transmission !! Believe me, it is a totally schizophrenic engine; you can drive it gently and it will waft you up the road with ease, OR floor it and it becomes mental quick and would love to kill you quick too ! Very tuneable to even more mad power for a front wheel drive, so my own dream sleeper is NOT a let down at all; almost perfect and almost too fast : They are meant to be limited to 150MPH, but i suspect that would be all too easy ! Runway needed !! Thanks for the great content ! J

I would add another car, the audi a4/a5 B8 platform with the 3.0tdi. the "diesel gtr" how its called in my country. Thing is pretty strong out of the box with 240hp and 500nm but with just software alone 300hp and 600+nm is guaranteed. My friend had an A5 with this engine and with a map it felt faster and stronger than an RS3 which we sat in shortly after for a testdrive. They are just a breath over 3k at least they were not long ago when i checked. The b6/b7 with the same engine, altough a bit weaker, is under 3k so you can compromise, the older versions do need a bit more thinkering tough to achieve 300hp. Lot of bang for the buck tough. People like to steer clear of them because of the quad-timing chain setup but the truth is, if you dont change your oil in 14k intervals and use mobil or castrol or some other high quality oil, it can easily reach 300k+ miles before you have to service tensioners, at least from what Ive seen in my country. In the UK people tend to care less about looking after their cars so idk how hard it is to find one thats in one piece and wont bomb the tensioners here, but im sure its not impossible. My friend's was great, apart from the bad fuel economy and expensive tyres... Its hard to get good mpg when the thing sounds like a gtr and has about the same torque as the gtr lol

With the V8 engine in those Volvos, try to get a 2007 or later model as the earlier engines could develop problems with the balancing shafts, which is not a fun repair. Other than that these engines are built to last hundreds of thousands of miles!

The XC90 from 2005-2006 had these problems, the S80 with the V8 engine started production in the 5th or 6th month of 2006, and the S80 didnt have these balanceshaft problems. I i recall. Look it up on the forums.

Thought the meriva was 189bhp, favourite sleeper had to be the 850R for the extra bhp over the t5 & t5r remove the r badge No1 would have a clue unless they looked inside ,Volvo made a proper monster of a sleeper

In my opinion, Porsche 911 turbo S is such a sleeper sports car. For non-car guys, it looks like a normal car but its mind boggling acceleration will leave Ferraris and Lambos in the dust. I know that Porsche is not quite a sleeper but just by looking at it, you won't expect it to be blisteringly quick as it is and if you compare it's price with ferrari or lambo it is much cheaper.
@CarsWithJB

Having driven a 992 Turbo S, I get what you mean - it looks like your average 911 sports car, but it was leagues ahead of the Ferrari 458 I drove

Favourite sleeper? Ok this time I genuinely just have to say L10 GS450h. Based on the reactions I always got, it looks slower than most things on this list, and probably doesn't feel much faster until you realise it's not the rev counter going round 😆 I'm disappointed that I can't get a facelifted one in the right spec within my budget to replace the porker...having a genuinely tough time trying to find anything I actually want for my next car. Not sure I'd call a vRS a sleeper anymore, everyone knows what they are. Always loved the S80 though, a V8 Volvo for that price is awesome (even if it'd get through that in fuel per week too).

@@CarsWithJB That's where I'm heading. My company is having mandatory return to office, which means 40 miles a day on the motorway. The Porsche isn't great for that and it'll just depreciate it so seems a bit pointless. I'm heading towards a warm hatch for a couple of years before I get back into something crazy...what I really want is an LS/S Class/A8 but they literally can't get into my car park 🙄
