You don't need a license to fly a two seat ultralight? Wrong. An ultralight is defined as a single seat aircraft. Try arguing with the FAA that a two seater with a single pilot meets FAR 103. I'll wait.

What most people don't realize is that the aircraft itself is the cheap piece of the equation. Annual inspection, insurance, and tie down/hanger are all ongoing expenses before you fly hour one. Then add in the hourly cost to actually fly the plane - engine/maintenance set aside and fuel. Yes, there are "low cost" aircraft. And often they are on the market because the current owner is looking to "get out from under" the ongoing costs.

It’s not so bad when you have dad that’s an A&P IA and your wife is an A&P… hehe if you are half way mechanical go experimental and get your condition authorization. Insurance is the only expensive thing that’s ultra ridiculous, especially for experimental aircraft and certified based in Alaska. Sure fuel can be pretty spendy, but go drive your Ford pickup for 4 hours it’s about the same fuel burn, and in 4 hours you’ll go nearly twice the distance…. My experience has been it’s not crazy expensive like most think… Course I only pay for parts on mine for the maintenance, but it was and so far is cheaper then operating an ocean boat was… and a ton funner!

Honestly, if you can find a plane for these prices, you probably don’t want to buy it. It’ll likely be a maintenance headache and you’ll probably be needing to do an engine overhaul in the near future. The absolute *best* route to plane ownership for most people is joint ownership. In most cases, you ultimately wind up spending rental money (sometimes less depending on how much you fly), the major things like overhauls/maintenance are split between several people and best of all, you know who else is flying your plane. Sometimes rentals are a bit goofy in that you don’t know how many 15 hour students have smacked them into the runway. Buying a “share” in the right airplane is the absolute best way to go if you’re involved with good people.

@@mattivirta They sure are thieves, but others like Aspen or Avidyne are the same shit. I rather prefer Dynon. Still expensive, but a Skyview is at least 10K cheaper than a G3X, could depend if the guy is flying VFR or IFR. IFR is definitly more costly than VFR though, i was thinking about that... I put on my good ol’ Cessna 140 two Garmin Gi275, they are awesome, still high on price for what it is, but it’s the only thing that can fit in that tiny cockpit, ahah, they are good and, i can start a basic IFR training with this. I would have take a Skyview, but no much room, and these gauge don’t destroy the vintage, nice, design of my 1949 lady, but still a heavy investment. I will always say to new comers in aviation : if you wanna fly, you must have money, because flying is very expensive. I got friends in France, and i’m quite jealous of the machines they are using, they have very cheap and very fun, brand new machines. It’s the ”ULM”, some are identic to GA planes... Too bad here in USA we only know, for a major part, only ”big planes”. But i think it’s starting to change because of planes like Rans and Kitfox, and i think it’s a very good thing. GA is dying, Ultralight is rising.

No, the J-3 Cub is not the easiest airplane to land. It's not difficult once you've mastered taildragger flying, but it does tend to float a bit, especially on a hot day over a black runaway. Slipping to a landing is also not difficult and is a great way to get into a short field or kill excess altitude on final. Someone said the J-3 is underpowered. I beg to differ. I think it's perfectly powered for what it is. You want your Cub with more power? Fly a Super Cub.

I had a Grumman Tiger that averaged out to about 200/hr. You DO need a Light Sport or private pilots license. AND I have no idea where you would find a nice Cessna 150 that is not at TBO for under 25-35K. And there are the recurring fixed and variable costs, etc., etc., etc. that are not even mentioned...Which makes me really question this whole video!

I owned a photography studio for 24 years and one of the services, I offered was aerial photography. This is how I got my license. I would hire a pilot shoot the job and then take a lesson. Eventually I bought a small Cessna. Long story short I canned an employee for a variety of good reasons. This person turned me into every state and federal agency they could think of and one by one, here they came. Among them was the IRS. So, if you have never experienced an audit, they begin with an interview. The agent asked me if I offered aerial photography services and i said yes. How much of your gross sales rely on such services was the next question. No much was my reply maybe 5%. How much did the aircraft cost you? The agent continued. I said $5k and before I could continue, he interrupted saying And it flys? I nearly feel out of my chair. He was expecting an enormous amount. As with most of the agencies, nothing illegal was to be found so they left. I was, in modern terms, Swatted.

Not sure why the Tomahawk wasn't mentioned, we had 2 new Tomahawks at our little airport when the new FBO came to town, Cessna 150's before that. So I enjoyed both trainers, the Tomahawk design was new and so different, I liked many features of it. Took my checkride in it too, the FAA examiner I took up in it had never seen a Tomahawk before, February of 1979.

Yep, $10,000 will get you a couple of annual maintenance appointments and maybe a few oil changes since legally, you as the owner, are not allowed to do any maintenance on a commercially manufactured aircraft unless it is classified by the FAA as experimental. Hope you have very very deep pockets if you plan on owning your own plane. Just go rent a plane if you really want to fly. No worries about anything other than flying.

Couple (or three) of comments on this video: 1. Stating you "don't need a flying license" in your video doesn't give the most confidence this was put together by someone in aviation. 2. I would not recommend the low-wing aircraft for anyone just starting out, as they require more skill than someone just getting their "flying license". This is why 150s / 172s are such good trainers. 3. I don't believe there are many decent versions of these aircraft (well maintained, low-time) around for these prices. Maybe something from the '50s / '60s with slightly high-time on the engine / airframe?

And if you check trade a plane or barnstormers you will find that most of the prices quoted here are outliers as in once in a lifetime deals, not standard prices. Yup just checked trade a plane. I think I’m gonna focus on light sport planes because of the parachute system in case of emergency, none of these have that. Now that I know it’s possible to have a parachute shoot out of your plane and save your life then I don’t think I could buy a plane that didn’t have it! Especially as a new pilot with a child.

I bought a Cessna 152 now this was a good time ago but it was real. Me and my father rented it and flew it to Tennessee on the way home it blew up the engine and we made a landing at a field in north Florida. The owner was a a&p but he didn't have any money so he sold us the plane for 1500.00 and he pulled the engine and replaced it after it was rebuilt for free. The engine was 3500.00 to rebuild. So 5k and it was least to Vandenberg airport as a primary trainer and flew for around 10 year's as their trainer. I think I flew it one time after owning it. But my sister got her ticket in it
