charmoli apum khrime It’s the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, an ex-student in St Petersburg who believes that great people sometimes have to break the law and do bad things for overall good. He’s impoverished, alone and without money. He decides that he should kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her money, then descends into paranoia, disgust, nihilism and questions the nature of what he did and whether he should be punished. It’s hard to describe, that was quite a shoddy description, but it’s an exceptional book and Dostoyevsky’s writing is sublime.

If you’re going the read The Odyssey, you should probably read Illiad first.

Not necessarily I had to study The Odyssey for my Classical Civilisation course and we didn't read The Illiad. The Odyssey it's self already shows us a brief understanding of key characters in The Illiad and what went on. But a bit of background information would help with the understanding of the hero's Odysseus encounters in the underworld but overall as long as they person has some understanding of Greek mythology it it totally fine to read without The Illiad.

I totally feel the pain of being a public school grad in literature classes lol. When I got to college I ended up surrounded by a lot of people with much fancier educations than mine, and oh man I had never heard of half of the books everyone took for granted we had already read. The upside of that, though, is that the literature I read in highschool was a lot more diverse. Seems like a lot of my classmates came from backgrounds where they were reading near exclusively old white men in school, and I hadn't. Also, as the person who always follows up with "Have you read Villette?" when someone says they love Jane Eyre, I'm glad you gave it a chance. My reason for asking that question all the time is just to get more people to read the book so I can have more conversations about it lol. Imo it's not just better than Jane Eyre, it's better than anything. Best book ever. I will die on that hill.

I think you're probably right about the diversity thing. If you spend all your time reading the books you're "supposed" to then you'll never get to half the books you need to. There are so many life lessons that old white men from Greece can't teach you.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten into little women before, it is one of my all-time favs. Then again when I go back and reread certain books I know I loved I'm often surprised at how hard it is to get into it. Great video. Im going throuh alot of my classics this year. Particularly finishing Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and starting Crime and Punishment by Froydo Dostoyevsky (which i highly recommend). I finished Dracula last year and Frankenstein a few years before. And i have to say, given the years both novels were written and published, you can see a dielectric tension between the novels. Each authors seems to agree, and disagree about alot of things. Particularly discussions about the progression of science, the anxieties of the time, the concept of faith, human nature and the sources of evil in parallel to good and where each resided. Fascinating read. I like to call them sibling books. Gothic masterpieces in spades. Another good one to look for is Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange case of Dr Jeckle and Mr. Hyde. It completes a appropriate trinity. Althouh i tend to forget simillar books that deserve its place among this house of works. It'll come to me. Lol happy reading.

The reason it says "an heroine" at 13:07 is because in England the "h" is silent. The "n" is meant to distinguish the first word from the second because having two vowel sounds next to each other would be awkward and difficult to say with an English accent. I also noticed things like that when I first read Pride and Prejudice! Also, I totally agree with the Little Women thing. Slow slice of life reads are best reserved for stressful times in your life, when you need a refuge from the chaos of life.

Bleak House is actually so good just make sure to keep track of the characters' names and general situations (I studied Bleak House in college and like my professor literally printed out a separate worksheet for us to fill out because there are so many of them) and you'll be able to enjoy it.

Villette is an excellent book. It takes a long time to read because of all the French you have to keep looking up in the back(at least in the version I read), but so worth the time. Charlotte’s descriptions are just mesmerizing in some parts.

If you haven’t seen the film about Mary Shelley you definitely should! It’s in Netflix in Finland at least, not sure about the US. Haven’t actually read Frankenstein and had no interest in reading it before I saw the film. It brings insight to her writing and it gave me a totally different view of her book, similar to that you explained!

If you want to stay along the Gothic stream, The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis is a trip. Also, I feel you would probably enjoy Vanity Fair by Thackeray. Great Expectations is a great novel, though I wish I could have read it as it was written - in periodicals. It takes a bit to get into it, but once connections start happening, it's beyond fantastic. Tip for reading Bleak House - Watch the BBC adaption with Gillen Anderson first. That's what I did. Visually seeing all the charactersfirst I think helps. Also I've watched Little Dorrit first because I couldn't get into the novel. Still have to read that one. Listening to you talk about how Jude the Obscure made you feel, was basically my reaction to Tess of the d'Ubervilles. Reading a Hardy novel is never gonna uplift your spirits, except maybe Far from the Madding Crowd.

But I'm reading the classical Brazilian translation (as I don't speak Ancient Greek...) will you comment them later? Hiya,I'm new to your channel so I'm kind of binge watching your videos :) I'm Greek so yes, I know the Odyssey because we had to study it at school as part of the ancient greek literature...I did enjoy the story but I think I would have prefered to read it in modern language so I could get lost in the story rather than having to translate all the way along! Dracula, I'm currently reading (50% into the story) and I'm loving it! And that comes from someone who is not a huge fan of horror...and who is not used to reading a ton of classics!It is definately a cool book to read! Frankenstein is on my TBR! :)

i've re watched pride n prejudice with keira knightly in it and she was awesome! she nailed the character. i actually believed lizzy is living inside her.haha. i have the book with me but i did not read everything. i skip chaptrs and only read my favourite dialogues/scenes...and oh, little women, i bought it last year and i'm still at page errm..5, i think..haha..i know there's a movies with emma watson playing one of the sisters. i think i need to watch the movie first then maybe after that, i'll continue. I've been watching a lot of classic-book-related videos lately and came across this one in my recommendations and oh my gosh, I love your personality! I barely got into the video and I was like, yes! subscribing! I'm not a big re-reader either, but I'd like to re-read at last one book this year and that's Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. It's one of my favorite books and it's been, oh my, 8 or 9 years since I read it. It's being adapted and the film is supposed to be released on Netflix this year. I'd love to re-read it before it comes out, especially because I felt like re-reading it last year and didn't get to it. I love Dracula! It's not for everyone, especially if you can't stand some sexist things in it- that's at least from what I've gotten from other booktubers. I really liked it, though, and was glad to have finally read it considering it's Dracula! and considering how prevalent vampires are in pop culture now. Coincidentally enough, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey are the two Austen novels I have yet to read and would like to get to this year.

Little Women is a TOUGH read but there are some chapters peppered throughout that keep you engaged. I LOVED the movie too but I actually preferred the way the ending occurred in the book! It was so lovely. But it was hard to push through the “filler” chapters. However those boring filler chapters really help you grasp each character’s growth and motivations more, even if you don’t realize it.

I loved Frankenstein too. Jude wrecked me too. If you want emotional wreckage, Germinal by Emile Zola or Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck ( I’m still traumatised by that one!) it’s great to see a book tuber reading widely and not just YA.

After Northanger Abbey I read Udolpho and The Monk and loved them so much. Northanger is my fave Austen.
