Same! I never had anything against Stephen King but I’m consciously seeking his stuff out because of how much Noelle loves him. It’s so great to find people like her who aren’t snobby about their lit degree and don’t look down on writers who are mainstream and entertaining. Like, what’s wrong with a writer being beloved by millions? What is this romanticisation of great art being an acquired taste by a small, exclusive group of elites? What a waste of an education if this is the worldview one arrives at!

“It was like constant pain and anxiety in the Goldfinch” and then you pick up A Little Life next! Oh boy, The Secret History is not the book you should be worried about. I actually reread A Little Life in isolation and that was a mistake. Waiting a little while to read is definitely a good idea!

A Little Life is my second favorite book (first is Call Me By Your Name), and I can honestly tell you it will crush every single part of you. I cried so hard reading that book, I was practically screaming in pain. Also The Secret History is good and has that illustrious Tartt pretentious energy, but it is also a little draining because there’s some problematic and potentially triggering dialogue. Overall I thought it was very well-written and well-researched.

Lilly Shewandagne what would you rate the book overall?!
@lillyshewandagne4 жыл бұрын
honestly thats THE question...it's so so hard because there's so much to consider. i gave it 5/5 but every persons rating is SO personal to them because this book affects people in completely different ways. let's say this isn't a "stan" book for me, something i would fight about if someone hated it, it's one of those books where i would shut up and understand any rating a person were to give it because the subject matter and characters are just so intense, you can't fault or disagree with anyone on how they might take it. i just have very complicated feelings about what the author was trying to do and how effective it was if that makes any sense...

I am trying to force myself to read Don Quixote. My edition is the Oxford World Classics. I am rather picky with my translations, but as I am not fluent in Spanish, I feel that I am not going to mind as much as I do with the French classics. The interesting thing about Don Quixote is how many authors (classic authors included) that have references to this book. Have you read anything regarding King Arthur?
