For me, the movie really clicked into place at the end with the aliens. I've said that it is a prequel for a Terminator style action movie that doesn't exist, and calling it an origin story really resonated for me. I feel like people don't like the ending because they think it would be more "cinematic" if it was bleaker, but I like how optimistic it is.
@ScharAznable7 жыл бұрын
I agree! This is how I felt about it too. One of my favourite things about it was that it didn't have this big set up and it wasn't leading into anything else, it was a perfect little slice of a universe telling a great story.
@DisgruntledPeasant5 жыл бұрын
The aliens add so much to the 'living with an abuser' themes. The abuse was motivated by a misguided desire to protect a ""weak"" person from the big scary outside world, our protagonist struggles to break free from the delusions of the abuser only to find out that he was RIGHT, the world outside is scary and dangerous and that brings up some uncomfortable but very real feelings about the motivations of this kind of abuser. Ultimately he was wrong about how capable she was to overcome that danger and had absolutely no right to take away the freedom to make the choice of facing that danger, smothering someone with control in the name of protection robs them of what makes life meaningful. Without the aliens the abuse angle would be too watered down, it would just be a case that "he was wrong so what he did was wrong", rather than dealing with the fact that an abusers motivation can have truly honest motivations yet still be deeply immoral and inexcusable.

The ending had to be what it was, it elevates the whole story/situation to something more, imagine an escape ending say like ‘ the decent ‘...then we’ve seen that type of movie a ton....but with the ending we got it raises the fact he was right, but still wrong...among so much more....I mean, I’m not as smort as mikey, and nowhere near as eloquent....but you get my very shallow point

I loved 10 Cloverfield Lane because it was definitely an Alien Invasion movie from start to finish. Even as I started to doubt the aliens were real, it was largely due to the presentation. The only person who was certain they were real had such a twisted mindset that you had to be crazy to take him at his word in absence of any other evidence. When they actually did show up, you were definitely in the mindset of some huge bombshell. It didn't matter that Goodmans character was crazy, that didn't make him wrong.
@PeJota6157 жыл бұрын
Great episode. This was such a great surprise film last year. Jarhead!
@aolson11115 жыл бұрын
The story literally does not work without aliens. Without aliens, you would instantly know that John Goodman was the bad guy, because there would be no third party confirmation that something was wrong outside. There's no reason she wouldn't just leave the first time she tries to go outside. And you wouldn't have the end of her character arc, where she takes the lessons she learns in the bunker and applies them to the rest of her life. I suppose it doesn't have to be aliens specifically, but, between that and a boring terrorist attack or something, the choice is easy.
@Solsys20074 жыл бұрын
In the original script, the world outside was discovered to be really dead and thus John Goodman was trying his best, albeit with a lot of flaws, to protect the girl and adjust her to the new reality.

@alexmarcelo64947 жыл бұрын
Mikey, I got an angle for you: I think this movie is a long metaphor for living in and leaving an abusive relationship. The movie goes through all the motions of an abusive relationship with Michelle; the initial feeling of being trapped, the apologies, guilt, acceptance, the continued feeling and subtle knowledge that something is wrong, the final straw that finally convinces her to follow through on her plans of leaving. The woman through the window works as a mirror of a beaten woman. The fear, put into her by her abuser, that everyone she loves is "gone", and that if she leaves the world will destroy her. And then, finally, when she gets out, *some* of the things, some of the worst things, that he has told her will happen to her do. And she finds that, despite how scary, alien, and unprepared she is for those things, she can overcome them. Then as she is driving away, she hears a call on the radio - she can continue her life in safety, or she can use her knowledge and understanding of what she has learned to help others who are in the same situation she was when she first left the shelter (relationship).

Fun Fact: Sweet Baby Boy John Gallagher Jr is actually a Broadway Veteran. I highly recommend checking out Spring Awakening, its pretty easy to find a bootleg online and the cast recording regardless is very good, John originated the role of Moritz back in 2006 and is on the recording. He also originated the role of Johnny, the lead role, in American idiot, so if you want to hear him sing song Green Day songs you can!

Was doomscrolling through a queue of Movies I'm Gonna Watch Eventually, came across #10CLOVE and thought "there's a MwM about this, and if I finally watch this then I get to watch that!" I am intensely glad that I did both. John Goodman is, indeed, a genius. I adore how this movie gives us everything we need to know about him and his almost certain misdeeds (method, coverup, potential twisted motivation) without having us stumble on a body in a closet or something. This movie *trusts the viewer* to fill in the gaps so it can remain focused on the story that's happening right now.

This is one of only a handful of movies to affect me in a crazy way. The first time I felt this was watching Fury in film class in high school; where a rage overwhelmed me exactly when it was supposed to--Fritz Lang was amazing... In this movie, the vent scene ruined me. I am claustrophobic and it took me several watches to get through that scene that's how powerful it was. That level of buy-in is something almost no movie can accomplish and I was stunned to experience it in this film. GREAT FUCKING MOVIE!

Gotta go with Tombstone. Also, the superhero angle is interesting but I don't see it as a superhero origin story but the origin story of a badass. The whole movie is showing just how strong she is from leaving a bad relationship situation in the beginning to trying to escape during the "psycho killer dungeon" part to being subversive in dealing with an unstable man, traveling through super cramped ventilation ducts, inciting a mutiny, crafting and executing a baller escape plan. She even has the fortitude of mind to go for the air canister when she see's sweet Emmett's body just sizzlin' away in the ice chest. She's incredibly strong in the face of all kinds of adversity... and also aliens. She's a fighter like Harold says in the beginning. And that's what she finds out about herself by the end when she chooses the road to Houston.

Thanks for getting to this movie. It delivered more than anyone could expect and now is one of my all time favorites. My only nitpick is the last 1-2 minutes. The radio + Michelle driving toward the danger wasn't necessary for me. She was already a badass and that scene kinda oversold that concept. If she just looked back in the mirror and it hard cut to black it would have been a perfect ending IMO.

The ending of this movie makes perfect sense to me because, from the start, it's clearly a story about what it's like to be gaslighted. Whether conscious of the finer points of his trickery or not, Howard does everything in his power to sway Michelle over to his way of thinking, using his anger as a threat when his words aren't enough. I don't think it's a coincidence that Michelle is going through a nasty breakup when this happens, either; Real-life cults intentionally target emotionally compromised potential recruits. So the point of the ending is to say that EVEN IF Howard is right about what's happening outside the bunker, Michelle is still MORALLY right to try to escape and exercise her own free will. Combine that with her ultimate decision to help others undergoing trauma, which victims of abuse often end up doing after they liberate themselves, and you've got a pretty clear thematic statement. And also aliens!
