Make sure the polearm has "couching lance" on it. Not every lance/spear can be couched. Get good with it and it's big boi damage. One shots pretty much everything.

Heh love the videos although admittedly a number of these are cheese. I didn't play warband so I'll share a few of the things that immensely helped me learn how to survive the combat system playing on realistic despite not knowing about the combat mechanic flaws from warband. The most reliable tactic I've found to fight early is with a really long one hand sword (even early in the game you can find swords 90-100) + a big shield. As was mentioned, time your block well to make them recoil. Then step to the left as you load your attack then step to the right (and aim for the head). This increases the chance of evading their shield because you're attacking from their exposed right AND gives you some extra directional damage because you're moving towards the enemy when you attack. If they don't have a shield though you can just attack from your right since they have nothing protecting them and it's further away from their weapon. You'll probably still get your butt kicked early in the arena against those veteran soldiers but you'll find yourself surviving longer doing this. Also although swords do less max damage than axes or maces, that's only true IF you get the attack distance correct. Early on when you're not that familiar with the combat and your character has lower level skills, you get far more of those attacks that do 0-5 damage because you hit with the shaft of the weapon. This is extremely common when fighting on horseback (which you should be) as it's far more difficult to get the swing timing perfect. Swords don't have that problem not to mention early in the game the maces and axes I've seen are mostly 75 or less length and I've found swords to be FAR more consistent, especially on horseback because of this. When using ranged on horseback, your primary job is attracting enemy fire so your infantry can get into melee range without getting shot, shooting them is only your second priority (if your horse gets killed early you generally die or have to block attacks the whole fight. And you lose out on all the xp from riding down enemy that flee). Especially once you get to forest bandits who are mostly higher level archers, they'll annihilate your men before they get close if you don't keep them occupied. From the start of the fight, charge towards the enemy but diagonally away, circle at max speed and the furthest distance that they stay aggroed on you, this minimizes their chance of hitting you. When the enemy are aggroed on you the infantry will stay bunched up enough that you can much more reliably hit them and your archers will murder them. If you still find yourself missing a lot, load up a shot, quickly turn into the enemy and slow down, fire then immediately resume circling and that should work. If you use your companions as mounted archers and watch they do much the same thing and it's why they survive most fights. A big tip about prisoners and the peasants you can loot, use the peasants as cheap meat shields as they have no salary. Also don't just blindly sell high level bandits because you can recruit them and some have the same promotion tree as the really sought after elite units like Brittanian highborn youth that turn into Fianns. That small amount of gold isn't worth throwing away an elite unit for.

I knew how to block with a shield but the most intense thing that happened yesterday was when I was 1v2 in the arena trying to advance to the final round and my shield broke, I was lucky enough to take one of the guys down and ended up having to learn how to parry with just a sword in the heat of battle. I bested the final man and advanced to the final round. The final round was a cake walk and I came out victorious

Pro tip 2: If you have a longer weapon (i.e. a spear or two handed) than your enemy, find the edge of their striking distance, let them attack and move backwards diagonally to the right and attack at the same time. If timed correctly you should hit the enemy right in the face everytime.

You can also kick with E and shield bash holding right click and pressing E. Press X to switch between range and melee use for certain weapons like javelins or throwing axes. And press X with lances on horseback to couch (lower) them to do insane damage. You can see if some lances are couchable by hovering over the item and it will say it!

Tip for when you are using a 2 hander in arena against another 2 hander. Run at your opponent with your swing pulled back and ready to go and stop just out of reach and the enemy will almost always swing early and miss giving you a wide opening to hit them. Got to time it right though.

When blocking with a shield, press E for an attack using your shield. It will paralyze the opponent for a pretty long time which gives you time to strike once or even twice. It does damage to your shield, though, so use it wisely

Just a quick note about tournament winnings. It's not nearly 3k denars, the "winning from bets" shows you the winnings WITH the money you invested. So each tournament if you bet max every round it's roughly 500-700 denars and an item. Edit: But other than that, especially tip with not facing enemy during attack wind-up is great, especially in spear vs. spear duel. Great tips, thanks :D

Important note: Running in a tight circle around your enemy only works if your movement speed is faster than your enemies, so if you are planning to rely on this in a tournament (especially for twohanded fights), you might want to ditch some of your usual heavy armor if your athletics skill isn't that great yet

One more tip sidestepping while you draw a new arrow but before you notch it will not detract from your aim but it will reliably spoil the aim of enemy archers (who will have attempted to hold their bowsting too long)

Even though i am a veteran at mount and blade these are nice tips . 2 more: If you use throwing weapons press x to turn them into meele. Spears in warband were absolute broken because they were fast af. If you hold Block and press e you hit the enemy with your shield or kick them and they are stunned for a short time . In warband that gave you a free hit. But now the time is too short and you cant spam kicks anymore but there is a skill in one handed that makes the stun time longer. I have not used it though but maybe it will also give free kills

I belive you missed no. 12. If you pick a really short weapon, you can hug your opponent, so he cant attack - but YOU can! Earlier I used a cheap, SHORT axe, engaged from the right - when the infantry colided - and then hacked away parallel (still moving sideways to avoid aggro) to the REAR of the enemy line. But with no second shield on your back, you can be a target for enemy ranged attacks. I still need to test it in Bannerlord. Im a bit high ;)

Another thing I found is when you're blocking and you e your enemy, you will open their guard but there's not enough time to attack but if you hold your attack for half a second the AI stops blocking and you release right into them being open

With tournaments, just dont forget that they more you do with betting... the lower the outcoume will become if you if you do them in quick succession. Just like in RL I quess. If team A win all the time.... if wont have a high payout when they do win and you bet on it

You forgot one rly Great Compat skill.... wegen your Riding with a Long Spear and you reach a Speed Limit, on the Right Botom over your weapon apears a pictur for lanceing. If you press X your Charakter Pulls the spear under his shoulder and if you Hit anything now you will deal up to 500dmg on Full armoured enemys. So you realy 1 hit everything with just running over them in this Modus.

Very good, thank you! Tip #12 there is a option to change the way you hit. Instead of moving the mouse you can use the keyboard to initiate the direction. That helped me a little bit. ESO: Could you make a video about the effects of statistics in combat? Obviously I can't test it because I suck, but you seem to be pretty good, you would feel the difference if there is any. I'm curious if a pro could fight well even with an untalented starting character. Also I had a max tall player, I wonder if it affects how effective can I thrust down from a horse. It could seem silly, but after seeing how deep is the simulation in this game with combat, (it matters which foot is in front to get max reach... ) it might just be a disadvantage to have a tall mounted character.

While that's true it's a bad idea to waste movement on attacking; recommending people get use to wasting movement as an alternative to the better option isn't a tip unless you want them to have a harder time later on trying to re-learn.

@@Daonitre True. I'm planning to set it back today, slowly I got used to the fact that even the camera movement can change the direction of the thrust. It helped me though in the first days a little bit. But even with that limited movements I was able to win tournaments and a lot of duels using the running around trick ESO showed here. That was way too easy that way. I wish they could make that less effective with a better AI. Also I would really like if they could implement stamina in the fights. That way running around somebody would not be a good idea in the first place. It would affected by the weight of the armor of course, athletic stats, number of strikes in a minute... You could block until the enemy is tired, and attack when he is out of breath, it would result a much more realistic fights and duels I think. But it needs a lot more animation for the tired state I think and therefore I don't think they would bother this time, maybe part 3. :)

I thought that moving the camera opposed to the swing is better. At least that's how it felt to me while plating in the arena. I understand that to hit hard the impact position on the weapon swing arch matters. And if i'm close to the enemy and swing and move the camera in the direction of the swing, then the impact intersection is closer to the starting of the swing arch and deals less damage. so i found it better to move the camera in the opposed direction. But if there is some distance then i found it better to not move the camera at all and keep the enemy in front so that the impact intersection be somewhat in the middle of the swing. A good way to test this that i did was in a city gang battle where they the enemy gang was behind closed castle gates. So until i broke the doors i could test the best impact intersection for most damage. Of course the middle best intersection is larger or smaller depending on how balanced the the attack is which is tied with the weapon handling stat.

People sometimes complain that it's too easy to strafe around enemies in Dark Souls. This makes even DS1 combat seem perfectly balanced. The combat here is laughably badly coded.

you don't actually make more than a few hundred gold from tournaments as the prize is what's given back from your bets every tournament has 4 to 5 rounds each with a cap of 300 to bet, so 1200-1500 is what you give them and then they give back your bets and winnings together at the end so if you get the pool of 1700 after you bet 1200 total you've only made 500, so if your low on funds at the start always bet on the first round as your chances are lower the area will give you more when you bet with lower odds.

There are times you'll face an enemy who just can't stop spam attacks at you and forcing you to always raise your shield... or they always raise shield and turtle behind cover. My approach to deal with these fuckers? Kick them. I often find kicking them would put them off balance and that's our chance to drive our swords through their necks.

sadly since patch 1.07 tournamets have been massively nerfed you can only win items between 500 and 2000 worth and betting will reward 50 denars while the chance of loosing all of the bet money persists
