I know this is an exotic car but some of these problems are ridiculous. The tire hits the fender????? I personally can't see myself spending money on a car with that kind of shoddy engineering. Really pretty though.

Amazing isn't it. Pretty sure Ferrari have come incredibly far in the last ten to fifteen years. The 488 I would think is a much higher quality product than a 360 ever was.

It's not like the 360 was their first car. BUt easy fix. Roll the fender. Job done. I had to do that to my 300ZX but thats because i fitted fat tyres on wheels with an aggressive offset. Common mod on ANY sports car.

Nah. The leather on the dash will shrink over time if the car sits in the hot sun. The leather on the dash gets VERY hot and any moisture gets cooked right out of the leather in no time.

One thing you didn't mention Rob, but that is very common with the Ferrari 360 is when they first came out, nearly every owner I saw in LA would take the stock exhaust system that came with the vehicle & replace it with an aftermarket one. My friend worked at a very well-known shop, the owner was just stacking all the new ones up, we tried to sell one on e-Bay just to see if we couldn't get rid of them that way, but had no takers after three auctions, even though we kept extending the time for bidding out to the maximum allowed. So if you buy a Modena, Spider, or Stradale, you should be aware that the exhaust package will most likely not be stock, if you're a purist, & if it is stock & you're not particularly fussy about parts purity, you'll want to replace it because the stock exhaust doesn't really sound all that great, a bit tinny. Some owners would replace the package, but keep the stock part if they wanted to sell it later, which is a smart idea, but most weren't interested in keeping it so the shop owner was just piling them up in a spare room. At last count I think we saw around forty-two in the room on the shelves. The aftermarkets sound pretty good, I liked the Hamann best of all one day when we did a side-by-side comparison of the exhaust notes on four different 360s, one with the stock, one with the Hamann, & the other two were I believe Innotech & MaxFlo.

The vibrations are caused by the flat-plane crank V8. If anything, that's why Ferrari went turbocharged. 4.5L was as far as that engine could go without shaking itself to pieces. Therefore, to get the power they needed to keep up with the competition, they went turbocharged.
@sgfreak96
@sgfreak96 8 жыл бұрын
I think it's safe to say they did turbos also for emissions and eco-friendly as well. The EPA laws are cracking down.
@flyingphoenix113
@flyingphoenix113 8 жыл бұрын
sgfreak96 Sure, which is why they reduced the displacement and used large turbos rather than just adding small turbos onto the 4.5L engine. They can get better EPA/EuroNCAP ratings by having aggressively different on boost/off boost characteristics which is exactly what they've done. Off boost, the car is civil and, dare I say it, frugal while savage on boost. It's what made the the 911 Turbo such a winning formula. Now that we have variable vain geometry turbos and direct injection, turbo lag is a thing of the past. I'm going to miss the noise of NA though, and engine longevity is bound to suffer as well.
@johnsouthworthnz
@johnsouthworthnz 8 жыл бұрын
Rob, I would add four things... 1. The battery in the alarm module, it can be maintained and prevent leaking and destruction of the module, very bad. 2. The reverse lever spring, a common failure and nothing to worry about, spring can be fixed via replacement, dealers will try to replace whole lever, expensive and a waste of time. 3. This one is important, the main cable from battery to alternator(?) tends to wear the connector to the point the cable will start arcing, 4. All pipe connectors esp coolant near the belts tend to loosen and can come off. Just a check and tighten.

Rob if i had to guess, the vibrations come from solid motor mounts.......most normal production cars have very weak motor mounts so the engine flexes when you go through the revs, this increases ride comfort, however does lose performance. Ever pop a toyota corolla hood and rev the engine? Watch the engine rock back and forth........solid motor mounts are often a upgrade for tuner cars, and do make heavy vibrations. My srt-4 went to solid motor mounts and it rattled like crazy, but the response i gained was superb......the engine loses some of its energy when that energy is transfered from the engine and lost to the soft mount.....

***** things were hand built and quirky pre 996 and 986. The early front engine cars are trouble, 924, 944. But air cooled cars arnt bad and the m96 engine (911 boxster cayman from late 90s to 2008 2009 or so depending on model) are really solid despite the rumors about IMS, as long as the car wasnt a garage queen itll run fine. The turbo and gt3 engine lines are bullet proof. And the new 9A1 engines which are in all the modern cars up until the new turbos are good outside of any worries that there are about DFI which thats to be said about any modern car. The newest 3.0 turbo in the 911 and 4 cylinder turbo in the 718 are yet to be tested.
@TheBIGJake111
@TheBIGJake111 8 жыл бұрын
***** Ive put close to 40k miles on cars due for an IMS to blow and one of which had over 120k miles on its original ims and I bet you could've went several hundred more. IMS is overblown and goes out when people lug their engines and have garge queens, if you drive around in a Porsche in 6th gear all through town and never let it rev of course something will go wrong, if you drive them like theyre meant to be IMS isn't an issue at all.

Hi Rob!...I think the main issues with the mirrors are the fact that they are suffering from a pendulum effect mounted that high up and out. The vibrations that come from rough roads and from a flat-crank V8(worse than with cross-plane cranks) probably really stress the mounting points. Love the video...really interesting...thanks.

The vibration problem isn't due to bad motor mounts but rather the nature of a straight-plane V8. SP V8's severely lack engine balancing and develop heavy vibrations and loss of power (and sometimes premature 80-120k mile engine failure) very quickly, even when perfectly maintained.

And when it was new it probably cost 1/5 what this Ferrari did when when it was new. Oh STFU, you idiots. You are all losing sight of the fact that these are old cars which are going to have nickel-and-dime normal wear-and-tear like Rob even said so. It's that simple. These cars are both over 12 years old, are shit-kicked on a daily basis by every dreamer who couldn't afford to own them renting them, and were bought not from the Ferrari dealer network as one should buy one, but rather via eBay, meaning that they were bad enough that, when it came time to consign them, were rejected by the dealer. Fact of the matter is, the build and material quality of modern Ferrari is exceptional. So many idiots here who couldn't even dream of owning a car like this making uniformed comments from the vantage-point of a Corolla. Strong. But funny.

A well-maintained and well-treated Modena is a real gem. apart from the sticky buttons, I haven't had any problems with mine which is 24 years old. The engine is fantastic, it's the latest 40 valve V8, sounds magical, and the manual gearbox is a real treat. If you find a nice 360, don't let it go, it's an excellent choice, the prices will soar because I can't imagine in what condition we'll find the new models in 20 years...the 360 will still be valiant in 50 years.

Thanks Rob, you've convinced me to never, ever buy a Ferrari. It says something about the arrogance of the folks in Modena that they'd let 10K korean cars surpass their precious racehorses in terms of common sense and build quality. I can't chalk that up to anything but a disdain for their customers. Thank god Lamborghini is owned by Germans.

superspeedersRob That's a good point from you, but I always look at the 'value for money'. Changing belts and bearings after three years or 50.000 kilometres, isn't really. IMHO. And I kept your earlier video's about your other Ferrari's in mind... Yes, a Ferrari is awesome...but not the only car to have fun with. Personally I like Sleeper-type of cars...Cars with even bigger engines. And watches are for showing off indeed..MB&F HM6 Sapphire Vision ($400,000)...WTF?! Thanks for your response!

Rob, the vibrations in V8 Ferrari's are mostly due to their 180 degree "flat plane crankshaft". This allows the engine to reach high rpms with a nice linear power band but you do get more vibrations than a traditional 90 degree crank used in most v8's. V12 cars do not have this issue because the firing order is balanced.

Love the videos! Maybe it's the flat plane V8 that is causing all this vibration issues? Unlike the cross plane, that is most commonly associated with American muscle and has that characteristic burble, the flat plane has no secondary balance. But it doesn't have the crankshaft counterweights of the cross plane, so with a lighter crankshaft it revs and responds much faster. But it will buzz. It has the same balance as an inline-4, so think sports bikes and how they buzz at the top end.... Thats the theory, but in practise, I don't know as I've never owned a Ferrari.

I had an F10 M5 for 3 years. Nah, more things break - the DCT broke twice needed two replacement, and I redline the car only 3 times in 3 years time (first time I really go over 6K rpm was when the car was 15K miles and it was warmed up); First replacement when the car was 40 miles, and the second was 20K miles. All odd number gears cannot be engaged, including the reverse gear. Airbag circuit/wiring issues, brake issues (uneven wear), backup camera doesn't come on, loud rattle of some interior trim (center console), cracked carbon fiber trims interior, mirror that doesn't fold sometimes, whistle sound when brand new at 60+mph, exposed wiring on the passenger door, water leakage on the driver's side (and the door is not frameless! they ended up replacing the seals). And when I leased it it was brand new with 4 miles on the clock, checked every options except CCB, the price was over 120K. I had to tow the car 4 times which I only towed the NSX once after an incident. But it's true for Japanese car, I had a 1991 NSX. Works great, no such issue (except the main relay died once), and the headlight light bulb went bad.

As for the vibration, it is because of the flat plane crank design of the engine. There's no counterbalance weights, which gives quicker and higher revs but makes quite a bit of vibration when compared to, say, a corvette. The good news is that Ferrari will replace the motor/transmission mounts with a 12 month warranty, meaning under normal wear and tear, you can have a free set installed every year if you drive like I do.

Love the Ferrari's, incredible designs and great sound. HOWEVER, if a ZR1/Z06 had these issues Chevrolet would be absolutely crucified. Loose mirrors? Leaking convertible top? That is unforgivable in my opinion. The magazines can't get over themselves in the Italian reviews and always bash American cars for supposed "interior quality" issues... but things like this shouldn't be ignored in the reviews just to save Ferrari egos from being hurt. Nice review and thanks for sharing!

Ferrari uses flat plane crank engines, its much different from traditional v8 which fire cylinders in a random kind of order where the flat plane crank fires each side evenly so there is a lot more vibration but does allow a whole lot higher revs.

Justin, it doesn't require 4-8 years... You can do it in 2 years if you buckle down. Networking Security is not that hard...Getting an internship will give you super hands-on experience, which is invaluable in this field. (Imagine there's a product out there and you just have to learn how to use it. Of course "Life Happens" and it can take you a bit longer. But it's worth it because you don't have to physically slave away.)
