A Ferrari is just a Ferrari, a dream car to me is a old maybe used diesel golf, runnin' almost for ever, takes a gallon maybe 1 and 1/2 on 60 Miles. That is the complete dream!, and it doesn't hurt someone, if u customize it, maybe with an old blanket u found in ur grandmas cupboard. I could dream on, how beautiful life was, can, or could be, instead of being a dick. (excuse me, i did not mean the moderator, thank u for ur vlog)

Thank you for for an honest review of a 355. So tired of the "this is everything that is wrong with this car" reviews from others. I am a current 7 year owner of a 1995 F355 Berlinetta and I have no regrets about my purchase. I have performed two engine out services in that time period. I have had a few minor issues between services during the 7 years like a water pump, alternator bearing and a small leak in one of the radiators but that is to be expected in a 20 plus year old car.

The tires are one of the cheapest issues of the 355 - replace it. Besides the belt (I made it after 4 years, even if you do not drive much, the parts will get rusty) you have other expensive problems: I had a repair of the complete front suspension, the shocks were down after 18 years - 4000 Euro. Never forget, it is an old car. I replaced all the sticky parts, you mentioned in the video: 3000 Euro. Water pump: 1500 Euro; often you have electronic problems, some thousand Euro. And: The GENERAL PROBLEM of the 355 is the HEAT MANAGEMENT. When you drive on an open road, it's fine. But when you in the city at a traffic light, the engine soon heats up - and the ventilators must cool down - if they work well. I own my 355 GTS (1995, 2.7 Motronic) now for 9 Years: Total costs in this time: insurance and tax: 18.000 euro. Maintenance (oil, water, sparking plugs etc), repair (shocks, electronic parts) and replacement of old sticky parts about all: 45.000 Euro. And I go not to the official F-dealer. An expensive part of life, but I LOVE the 355. For me it is one of the most fascinating cars of all time. Every time I drive it, I'M IN HEAVEN...
@lamberko
@lamberko 4 жыл бұрын
18.000 + 45.000 = 63.000 ..... in 9 years .... = 7.000 per each year ... or 583 per month. All inclusive! For owning and driving - and heavily enjoying - a classic exotic sportscar from the good old times, I think that's not too much. Especially when you keep in mind the cars growing value.

The air vents are still yet original - but now (after 24 years) they also get a little bit sticky....there ist allways something to do on the F355. Last month, the original philips radio (DC 532) gave up - no more sound from the speaker. Glad I have a good sounding engine in the back...

Nice video. I've been running my 94 F355 for 10 years/27k miles now. Wonderful. Cheapest car I've ever owned too. I've spent £20k looking after it including belt changes in that time, but it's increased in value by at least £40k. They all get the sticky switches. Tar remover gets rid of it on the handles etc until you get them refinished. Centre console has to be refinished at some point. New tyres transform the handling at under £200 a corner. Mines a keeper. Grab a good one while you can.

I've driven a 360 F1 and there was tremendous leaps in F1 tech compared to the 355. I have not driven a modern Ferrari with dual clutch but it must be lightyears ahead of the original single clutch F1 in the 355's. Great video, you touched on valid points and enjoyed watching!

Really enjoyed this. I have a 355 F1 GTS. I've seen many of the US videos saying these cars cost an arm and a leg. But I have found that whilst they are not cheap, they are not as horrific as you might think. The entry cost is high, the risk of stuff going wrong is a possibility (could be lots of cash) but generally I have found mine to be a good solid car. Sure there is always consumables and other stuff like manifolds which are a known weak point, but I reckon mine costs about 2-3 grand a year to service, maintain and repair averaged over the last 6 years. Worth every penny, especially as it has doubled in value.

I rarely comment on social media so by that standard this is a genuine critique. Firstly, great honest video Jay.. and from a non-owner. I can tell you that driving one of these is like driving a slice of history. A full page of Ferrari heritage. These cars had their issues like many cars do after a substantial design overhaul (F10 BMWs have had numerous factory revisions and corrections applied to it and there are still several class action lawsuits in flux - innovation comes with its liabilities!) The truth is, the happiest owners don't buy these cars, they pay adoption fees. For them, care and maintenance is not a chore, it's an education and a labor of love.

Hi Jay! Everything right and very well told, thank you. This car is truly a pleasure. By the way: there is a trick to reduce the service costs of replacing the cam belt: dismounting the right rear tire (and some more), my garage do so and so the enginge doesn't got to be out for that service. And to complete your story: every 500km you should take a look at the level of engine oil - while keeping the engine running (dry sump!) and be absoletly carefull about oil drops: hot exhaust beneath!

A very nice video and commentary of the 355GTS and rightly saying that this was the last of the 308 series line, a real classic Ferrari before they got oversized with paddles and mode buttons. As to the issue of catching fire, this is mainly due to a lack of inspection of the two aluminium fuel tanks, which would chafe against their looped steel support straps and also failure to timelessly replace the associated rubber fuel hoses. Another issue to be aware of is the cam belts' tooth gears. These are made of plastic and can eventually disintegrate, losing the belts etc. So worth replacement if you have any 308 series...

My '94 3000gt VR4 has 4 wheel steering, electronic suspension, the electric banana in the tailpipe, a Getrag 6speed, 4WD, and now it's modified, 550 hp and ft/lbs. at the wheels. Running costs are still zilch, and it still looks and sounds great. Guess I could always paint it red.

But does it sound as good, is it as well refined, or does it have that racing pedigree that Ferrari is always known for, as well as the quality of every hand-made part and well-tuned engine, titanium piston corn rods, 8500 rpm V8 that is tuned to perfection which makes it not overwhelming, and not underwhelming? A Mitsubishi will never compare to a refined italian sportscar like Ferrari. The driving is stiff, the engine is sometimes underwhelming, the exhaust nose is terrible, and that 4WD is a little bit of a heavy slug. The car performed worse on the race track than their Evo cousins, and it has a tendency of having quite the turbo lag. Even modified it sounds less of a Mitsubishi, and the VR4 doesn't produce as much hp as stock. Makes me wonder why people modding their cars have this need to say their car is faster when the ride quality and finesse is piss poor. C:

I had both Stealth - the Dodge production of Mitsubishi 3000 - and the 300ZX. The Dodge was only 175 hp cuz it was 12 valve, while the 300ZX was lighter and 250 hp plus it cornered better and interior was more plushy. Still, none compare to this Ferrari and I speak from 2 out of 3 experience.

Have to say spot on review..well done. I was an owner of a F355 spider in red with matching red full leather interior even the roof cover was in leather. Negatives getting in and out you need to be a gymnast..keeping it clean from dust before I put on the cover, the rubber bits got sticky may of been made in China! Dead power before 3,500RPM..steering wheel to big as it had an airbag in it,.dashboard was to plain, electric seats had to move and windows had to do to move back and forwards the electric roof and one day it miss timed and hit the seat top. Picked up stone chips easy around the bottom half of the car, around town was mostly in first and second gear..exciting but gets a bit boring to, although the BHP was 380 it felt like a sports bike more torque would be better as its non turbo. I don`t like the tall windscreen, half the height would be great and the engine bay gets very hot and some rubber pipes cracked and let in air had to replace caused engine to have lack of power. Pop up headlights I did not like and the `engine out` belt change every 3 to 5 years is a pain. Positives after checking the 348 and the 328 I like the 355 was another level above them..the looks, the sound and the handling. Above 3,500RPM was life changing going through 20 minute tunnels in Japan all cars moved across for me and let me go..loved it. I raced a 5 litre amg twin turbo mercedes for 15 mins in Cyprus in and out of the traffic got to the light in Nicosia he looked at me with his big cigar stunned.Hehe..now I and a family man with kids looking at getting a 911 Porsche as I like the rear seats that will come in handy and better as an everyday driver.

Maybe i am just bias’d towards Italian cars, but, i am sorry, never have, and never will see the appeal of a Golf GTI. I drove a nicely maintained GTI 1, a GTI 5, and 6, and they are quite honestly no different to any other front wheel drive runabout. They are boring, the handling is, well, to put it nicely, DULL, and no matter what color it is in, or what wheels you put under it, no one will notice you in traffic. Oh, and then theres the fact that fanboys seem to forget that it’s front wheel drive, is s hatchback, isn’t a real grand tourer, and it is called a GOLF😂😂 I will hold on to my ‘02 Alfa 156 V6 as long as i can. It handles much much better than any GTI can dream of (even though it is front wheel drive-a detail that every GTI fanboy reminds me of every time i bring it up..)has an amazing italian engine, sounds like a little Ferrari, and gets attention everywhere it goes. Oh, and it has no stupid LCD screens plastered all over the dash, it has no stupid buttons all over the steering wheel, the gears are selected by ME, through a regular old fantastic 6 speed manual stick shift and not through some button or flappy paddly monkey ear thingies behind the wheel, the dials are actual dials with needles, and it has an actual handbrake, not some hidden button somewhere. Ohh, and it wont make farty farty sounds everytime i change gear..

I take jayemms point but a Golf gti isn’t faster on straight or twisty roads. Unless you are a dim driver. A 355 is a superb handling car and is very very quick even by today’s standards if you know how to drive.

You could give those switches to someone who is crafty with carbon fibre. Plastics are the base for baking a carbon fibre mesh, so technically you could convert all those sticky plastics to a carbon fibre product. I would also wrap up the steering column cover in black leather, as I would the seat belt tensioner slot (the black plastic around the red seat belt button). The interior is like 90% on its way to be considered posh, it just has some little 90s Fiat details that need to be sorted out.
