The Lone Wolf how they pretty much always show that the classics are better, but the newer ones win in the story.
@nidalderoo34485 жыл бұрын
The Lone Wolf it’s because they were concepts that someone actually used his imagination for. These “Legacy” characters are pretty much just earlier concepts that are changed a little and than become important for their race and sex. Ironman billionaire tech genius who built an advanced armor and became a superhero that was something. Ironheart taking over when Tony got into a coma and became a superhero in a similar armor while being so great because she is a young black female genius not so much. And I mean they could work if executed right. Captain Marvel for example. Monica Rambeau took over as Captain Marvel, but she was original in her own right. She wasn’t some recycled character she had a different origin, different powers, different aspects. They only shared an alias

“Civil War 2: War Harder” I’m dying
@williamhemming82285 жыл бұрын
The best, and yet most unfortunate, death goes to Ted Kord. He died so unnecessarily because none of his "friends" and fellow heroes could be bothered to believe and help him. They all dismissed him and his claims of a secret threat, leaving him to pursue it alone. He quickly wound up completely in over his head. He was coldly and casually executed with a bullet to the head.

Annnnd the entire plot centered around a nonsensical heel turn for Max Lord, who we knew *from internal monologue* was not evil, though certainly a bit twisted. See: his creators (Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire) mocking the whole storyline in their continuation of the Justice League they built him for.

One major problem I had with Bruce’s death in Civil War II was that in the Totally Awesome Hulk series that was running at the time where Amadeus Cho was the Hulk after Bruce had disappeared, Bruce had returned drained of all gamma radiation. He’d put himself in deadly situations and no appearance by the big guy, and Tony himself had scanned him, confirming no gamma. So Bendis, in typical Bendis fashion, has ignored the continuity of another title so he can have his story. This aside, Carol acted like a moron anyway. She hears that Bruce may Hulk out, so you’d think she’d do some research, check in with Tony or someone who can verify whether this is likely. Maybe even get someone in with him who can keep an eye on him. But no, she goes in with dozens of soldiers and other superheroes all guns blazing and is surprised when shit hits the fan. But it gets worse. Carol knows Amadeus Cho has taken up the mantle of Hulk, and takes the same tactless approach with him. You know, the guy mourning Bruce and confirmed to be the active Hulk. Civil War II is a crap event.

I think fans “hated” Superman’s death for different reasons than you listed. Fans hated it because it was Superman! People like myself, whom Superman is their favourite hero of all-time, felt actual loss at the time. Remember that not a single issue of Superman comics was printed for three months after he died. Then it went into Funeral For A Friend even before we got Reign of the Supermen. Looking back over 25 years ago, yes it was clear they had a plan to resurrect him, but there was actual fear that if Superman were to come back he wouldn’t be the same character. Fans did not hate it because we thought it was a cheap shot or whatever your reasoning was. This is coming from a guy who was around at the time, going into comic book stores anticipating each issue.

A lot of fans actually enjoyed the Death of Superman, because it turns out people enjoy stories with good characters, action, and writing. Was there a single Cyclops fan who liked what they did to him in Death of X or Elongated Man fan who liked what they did to Sue?

Death of Superman had another knock on effect that's often looked. At the time there was a sub-plot about Clark and Lois getting married. The marriage being sort of canceled with his death, but as pointed out it was all planned to go through in the end with the pair finally tying the knot at the end of the story arc after the resurrection. The problem. The TV series at the time, Lois and Clark:- The New Adventures of Superman, was also doing doing the marriage arc thing. It was supposed to tie in with the comics, but no one in the Comics writer's room told the TV writers what was happening. So it looked like it was all going to happen on TV months before the comics. DC licensing couldn't have that and told the show it couldn't marry the two until after the Comics. The result was the third season of Lois and Clark. A confused mess with everything pulled straight from the big book of both bad comic clichés AND hack Soap Opera drama. Clones, Memory loss, sudden reveal that a character was already married. They threw everything at it just to drag on the plot out until the comics said they could go ahead with the marriage. It pretty much killed the show.

What about Nightwing's death in Injustice comics? Or Ted Kord's death in the Injustice 2 comics? Or the multiple deaths of DC's "Countdown to Final Crisis"? Or Firestorm's death in "Identity Crisis"?
@gemminycricket75975 жыл бұрын
I didn't find anything wrong about Nightwing's death in Injustice. For one thing, it's a standalone story with no impact on other series so it gives character deaths some finality and meaning. And the way it was done was displayed well as a devastating loss for Batman (even using a panel with him cradling Nightwing's body similar to Jason Todd's death which was a nice touch) basically losing a son all over again, worse at the hands of his own biological son- even just accidentally. It was a crucial moment highlighting that, at that stage at least, despite their differences and agendas, they knew and respected each other and understood the severity of the loss. Despite their feud, Superman turned to Catwoman knowing Batman needed emotional support. Which, if anything, makes the following events all the more devastating. I don't know. That's just my opinion on it :)
@lolosmith83405 жыл бұрын
I'm okay with Nightwing's death in Injustice. The setting of Injustice, a dictator Superman, immediately let's the readers know that this Elseworld is dark and twisted. And that our normal expectations should be abandoned. Injustice is a stand alone comic and should not be judged under the same light as mainverse comics.
@twistednightmare13635 жыл бұрын
Nightwing's death was one of the worst, not because he died but how he died, comics have a setting were theres a constant suspension of disbelief that people survive brutal violence without dying, but then Nightwing suddenly dies accidnetly by landing on a conveninatly placed rock. If that kind of acidental death can happen then how has batman not acidently killed people before with the stunts he's pulled?
@lolosmith83405 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with you on the way he died. It was poorly thought-out. And Nightwing's death was mostly used as a way to escalate the rift between Damian and Bruce. And draw a bigger line between Batman's side and Superman's side. Also, I think Damian knows better, especially not during the middle of a riot, to mix practice time/habits with work. Even if he was frustrated and annoyed with Dick's lecturing. Yet, Nightwing still should have died in Injustice. P.S. technically Injustice is a video-game comic tie-in. But, most fans see it as a Elseworld because it should be an Elseworld.

Let's be honest, Wally West is THE most popular Flash among comic book fans. His sales were actually higher than any of Barry's. The only reason they killed Wally is because Dan DiDidio at DC puts his personal tastes ahead of obvious fan interest. He hates sidekicks.

I always thought the Question’s death was really dumb. He didn’t even go out in the way a hero should; he died of lung cancer. I facepalmed so hard when I read that.
@derangel91435 жыл бұрын
I loved how they handled his death. It made it an emotional and tragic story. Dying while fighting is such a cliche thing and anytime it happens you instantly go "yeah, they'll be back in a couple months" but the way Question's death was handled in 52 made it feel more "real" and like something that would stick. I wish they would have kept Montoya as Question when they rebooted the universe.
@HiddenInTheTruth5 жыл бұрын
@@derangel9143 I'm a huge Question fan (particularly Vic) but i agree with you that the death was well executed, painful and felt like it had weight. Not a big bang or horrific violence. Just a slow, painful end for a true street level hero.
@ComicBookGuy4205 жыл бұрын
I just miss Question, I always thought he should've gone out investigating the mother of all conspiracies, putting them together, then the last few panels show someone entering his office, a gun extending toward him, bang, and scene, it could've set up a major investigation, and a big shock reveal when they finally found out who did it, (my vote arsenal getting mindfucked by gorilla grodd)
@HiddenInTheTruth5 жыл бұрын
@@ComicBookGuy420 Well, he did die in the middle of a major investigation involving "The Cult of Crime" which does have long lasting conspiracy elements. And honestly him just getting shot and killed seems weaker to me, as he deals with thugs with guns regularly. Cancer isn't an opponent he could "fight" in the traditional sense, so him losing doesn't undermine his skill, rather it illustrated his mortality. Unlike Batman, Question isn't written to fight gods. He actually seems like a normal person using wits and skill to find the truth. Personal opinion though. Mine is no more valid than yours in the end.

The "Death" Of Superman came off as being every bit as contrived and forced as the ending of Fallout 3. It was so bad that one respected fanfiction hosted for the longest time on a now-deleted fansite's DC section got the Golden Age Sandman and a couple of his associates to (disgustedly) analyze the whole emo PoS, from the artwork to the plot, concluding with Wesley and Sandy resignedly chanting as one how this wasn't even close to Jack Kirby, how they -knew- Jack Kirby and how, "You, dear sirs, are no Jack Kirby!"

I can get why some people are angry about Poison Ivy's death but... Like, she's one of the easiest characters to bring back. The Green makes her a secondary avatar, Harley does some crazy scheme that brings Ivy back, she's in some kind of plant based healing coma, etc. Most of the characters that died and will stay dead will most likely be all the D-list characters. Roy, Wally and Ivy will eventually return somehow because they're too popular.

"CRISIS #7 - Death of Supergirl" How could you forget that one? That marked the end of an era for comics. Her passing, made Superman the only Kryptonian left, and led to "Man of Steel", where they depowered Kryptonian power and made him weaker. Her death was the "Death of Innocence" in comics. Fans know it was because the editors wanted Superman to be the "Last" and the way she died was just cheap. The fact she died only wanting Kal to be okay, soured it more. How could you miss that one?

The gender non-specific form of the concept is one of the defining events of Spider-Man's origin story as well as any number of other classic heroes such as Batman. Gendering it was indeed trash.
@warailawildrunner53005 жыл бұрын
It refers to characters, mostly female, who were created just to be a foil to drive the hero's story when they are killed. See Kyle aka green lantern's girlfriend, who was murdered and stuffed into a fridge. The spiderman example is partially this, but there was a specific purpose for his uncle's death - it was the consequence of peter's choice to not stop the thug. The murdered female in fridge trope is usually offscreen and is instead just used as a plot point without it having much in the way of adding to the story.
@EatWave5 жыл бұрын
@@warailawildrunner5300 Motivational character deaths are not a gendered trope. You'll find male characters who exist to die at some critical plot juncture which will redefine the main character in some way including Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman.

Oh, boy, this is a tough call. Comic-book death is it's own thing because publishers overuse it. Death has become a joke because we don't buy a character's ultimate sacrifice. We know, especially, when a "franchise character" dies, they're gonna be back sooner rather than later.
