Great video! I'm pretty sold on upgrading my 2017 iMac 21.5-inch (3.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB Ram, Radeon Pro 560 4GB Graphics, 1TB Fusion Drive) with this new 27-inch 5K iMac. Bigger/higher resolution screen, upgradable RAM, incredible graphics upgrade, SSD standard, seems like a no brainer. Can't wait for you next video because my biggest question is whether it'd be worth it to upgrade to the 10-Core for a video editor. I edit in Resolve 16 Studio, Blackmagic RAW 4K files, and I use the Thunderblade external SSD. Edits usually go fine until I do any denoising and it's all shot to hell. Exports seem to take a while too, but I do downscale to 1080 if that makes a difference. I assumed that was all graphics-related, and was going to pass on the 10-Core, but gonna wait until your results to see if it's worth the cash. Only big disappointment without actually using this new computer is the minuscule number of Thunderbolt-3 ports. What the heck is that about?

Bottom line- if you have a 10 core (or higher) iMac Pro, it’s probably not worth upgrading, but it would be silly to by a 10 core iMac Pro today. My best guess is that they will discontinue the iMac Pro by the end of this year. I thought about selling my iMac Pro and getting one of these, but I would be giving up 2 TB3 ports, which are important to some.

$3,500 iMac that can play 131 tracks is simply mind boggling. It used to cost $8,000 or more for this machine and only a few people can afford it. ✓Finally the long years wait is worth it. Technology is keep going, and I believe Apple give this last super BIG performance shot with last Intel Machine that pretty affordable with Pandemic. I will order tonight and start making some music.

Can't wait for the 8 Vs 10 core comparison! I ordered the 10-core myself due to using Autodesk 3d software on bootcamp, as it is no longer supported on mac os. It uses the CPU to render due to only supporting Nvidia graphics cards when modelling and raytracing. I also really abuse my Macs with hugely complex Photoshop files and large lightroom editing sessions. Hope this choice will pay off!

Just purchased imac with 5700xt graphics card because it just makes sense. I do care about the portability but I think I will wait and see how the macbook pros with ARM processors will do and purchase one later. With intel processors, I think power hungry tasks will be better handled by imac than macbook pro.

OT, but i downloaded R5 8k file and 4k 120fps. I could play and edit 8k in FCPX without a problem (Better performance setting), did not need to transcode it. 4k 120fps was a harder candy, it did not play smoothly at atll so I had to transcode it to ProRes. Machine: base iMac Pro (8 core)

From a cost perspective if buying the iMac 2020 with an emphasis more on gaming in bootcamp rather than video editing I’m assuming the upgrade of the graphics to 5700XT is more important as the upgrade to the 10-core i9 cpu, correct? Curious about any noticeable difference in gaming FPS with the 8-core i7 vs 10-core i9 with the same 5700XT graphics on both.

Was going to upgrade my 2019 i9 iMac for this 2020 iMac due to the T2 chip and 16g it vram. But after thinking it over I cancelled my order. And decided I’ll wait to see what Apple silicon has to offer. I don’t need boot camp. And my iMac is still covered for another 2yrs of apple care. Still on the fence but leaning 10 core heres why.... Immediately it will be used for FCPX editing, obviously I could go 8 or 10 core for this with the 5700xt 16gb card. The 10 core PRO's: performance and more cores but CON's: higher cost (400), higher power usage159W vs 120w and higher thermals due to higher power usage. In the long term however in its 2nd life my iMac will likely become a virtualization system... and virtual systems like cores so I'm leaning 10 core

Heads up that the Canon RAW Plugin 1.5 for Final Cut Pro X (latest version as of Aug 26) does not work with FCP X 10.4.9! Just updated my app and it will no longer display video for my CRL footage. According to the release Apple was using a pre-release version 2.0 of the Canon RAW Plugin, so keep in mind before updating!

If you compare the 8 core vs 10 core please keep in mind that you can get the 10 core with the 5300 GPU to save some money. For the 8 core you need to buy at least the 5500xt.

Great review as usual. You mentioned that you are coming out with a comparison video between the i7 and i9 for the iMac. I’ve just bought a new MBP “2020” i9, 64GB, 5600M and an iMac “2020” i9, 5700XT (used your link to upgrade the memory to 64GB. I haven’t taken the iMac out of the box yet but noticed the fans in the MPB are quite intrusive. I use to own a 2013 Mac Pro; hence I’m used to a virtually silent working environment. I’m still within the 14-day return period, and I’m in two minds whether or not to send them back. Would I be better off with the 2.3GHz in the MBP and the i7 in the iMac, regarding the thermals? Appreciate all the work and effort you put into your videos. Thank you!

I have an ipad pro 12.9 (equipped with the new magic keyboard) which literally replaces my old laptop these days, so I figured the imac 27 would be better to get and cheaper than the macbook pro, since I have portability through my ipad. And with the new apple chip that is soon to come out, it may make sense to spend your money towards the newer macbook pro models that will be equipped with it.

I think it's a pretty viable solution :) The 5700 is only about 8% slower than the 5700 XT for gaming performance. If the 16GB of VRAM isn't important to you, it's a viable choice. The 8-core is definitely what I would choose.
