Cambodia best chance to win a medal was during 2016 Rio olympics through Sorn Seavmey from Taekwondo. She won gold medal during Asian games 2014 in Incheon. While Bangladesh best opportunity was during last edition of summer olympics in Tokyo, through Ruman Shana, a bronze medallist during Archery world Championships 2019.

Cambodia is a pathetic country. They super-cheated in the SEA Games last year by using athletics from abroad, instead of giving chances to their own athletes. in addition, they added lots of their own local sports in the event, highly craving for gold medals in the event. How shameful! They always boast about how great their country is. Their dreams are only in the miracle walls of Ankor. Never a chance to look forward, always fall into the past that never existed.

I love all those small representations walking proudly during Opening Ceremony :) When USA enters stadium you can leave to grab some food or make a tea but all those small represenations with 3-10 people are just sweet. They look also quite relaxed. I am from Poland and from few Olympics no one handling national flag won a medal so of course superstitious sportsmen do not want to do that ;) Those tiny representations are just happy they can attend and it really shows Olympic spirit.

That’s the problem…luck has nothing to do with winning!! An American and a Nepalese squared off on the track. The Neopolitan thought “I’ve trained for years and am really good…I hope I will medal” The American thought “I am invincible, the absolute best at what I do. There is no way in hell I am losing to this skinny twerp...period!!” Guess who won that event? It was not the twerp who “hoped” they would win, it was the guy who knew he would win before the gun even went off. Your attitude is what burns the fuel that is needed to win…. 🦾

The case of Bolivia is quite sad. Not only is Bolivia the only South American without medals, it has not even gotten an Olympic diploma, those given to the top 8 finishers. Other Latin American countries that are yet to medal at least have gotten one: Nicaragua (4th in baseball in 1996), Honduras (top 8 in 2012 and 4th place in 2016 in football), El Salvador (5th in cycling with an American born cyclist and 8th in 2008 with a female shooter). Bolivia is usually weak in sports competitions even in a regional level, at the latest Panamerican games they got all their medals in racketball but did not get any at Olympic sports unlike other Latin American nations.

That’s sad to know, I am a foreigner and I am currently l living in Bolivia (one year in La Paz and one year in El Alto). I have to say that the people here are very nice but it seems to me that they just don’t care about achieving or winning anything in their lives (not just sports but every aspect of their lives). Failure is something acceptable and normal unlike the East Asians where everything has to be done successfully without error, which is very stressful for me. They just spend their time enjoying themselves and I can say that they are probably the happiest people on earth.

That is so sad we have had the same problem here in Egypt-socially- but not because of poverty as nobody cared about any sport except football !! till Mohamed Rashwan in Los Angeles 1984 (Judo) and Mo Salah in football (soccer) debunked that .Also in 1998 Egypt won World Championship under 21 in handball in Cairo and it was a game changer for Egyptian youth as it became the second popular game here in Egypt after football . Our problem here in Egypt with sport is neither about resources nor talents ; it is just about 'who cares'...

Myanmar could have won its first olympic medal back in 1972 if the current system of weightlifting had been applied back then. Until the 70s, weightlifting had three different lifts: clean and jerk, snatch and military press, the latter no longer included. Gyi Aung Maung ended up in 5th place but if only snatch and clean and jerk were counted he would have won gold but his military press lifts kept him from the podium. Curiously 1972 was the last year in which military press was included.

Tension of not getting services, exam pressure, ruin our childhood and those who are intelligent working in foreign. As a non-Indian I can't speak much to that cultural side of things. I think much of the world prioritizes school over sports, which in the long run is probably a good thing, but one item that is super clear is that, in the Olympics, champions are not born but rather are the product of the society and culture in which they are brought up. If folks stress the Olympics and give people the tools they need, they'll be champions. If they don't, they won't.

Tagging to the previous comment and speaking from my European experience an interest in the Olympics and professional sports stems from a general understanding at grassroot level that physical activity is an integral part in the development of any human being. Greeks and Romans believed that _mens sana in corpore sana_ and this principle came down to Europeans through the centuries. If you have millions who do sports, they will generate a thousand world-class athletes and politicians will find a way to accomodate this demand and build facilities. If you only have thousands who do sports, chances that they have the talent base to grow even a few world class athletes are slim.

Absolutely, these nations have a ton to be proud of, regardless of medals won. I think another commentor on this or another video said that there is just as much pride in having competed as in having won a medal, especially for many countries that lack resources, and I think that's 100% true. With the exception of a few small rich countries that could care less about Olympic success like Brunei or Singapore, the majority of countries that do fairly well at the Olympics have the financial resources to invest in training facilities and their athletes are able to easily secure sponsors to give them the required financial resources to develop their skills. Look at the top ten performing countries right now in Paris....Unfortunately, poorer countries can't compete on that same level. 😢

Taking into account extension and population, RD Congo is a huge underperfomer. There is a nation whose not winning medals comes as no surprise but it has been close to the podium 2 times: Seychelles who had two boxers who fought in the quarterfinals of boxing back in 1992 and 1996; had they won their bouts they would have secured a medal. Mali, a 21odd million person nation, had a huge hope on a taekwondo player in 2008, Daba Keita who was the world champion back then. He lost in the quarterfinals to the shock of many and even the President of the nation and newspapers said it was a sad and disappointing moment for Mali. Four years later he was supposed to fight for the bronze medal match but an injury kept him fron doing so. Mali "best" chances might come from football.

Philippines are not in this list, but its difficult to believe they haven't won much more. I was in Manila during the 2012 Olympics, and India got 6 medals, and Philippines TV commentators kept arguing about how India did better (what? that's hardly better! and we aren't happy, we should do far, far better) than Philippines zero medals. But the incredible thing is at that same time Philippines had a great boxer, Manny Pacquaio, and I am sure Philippines have better boxers than almost all other Asian nations. During my stay I saw a lot on Manny Pacquaio, where he was literally amongst the top-list of world boxing. Why they have undershot is a surprise as I know many Filipinos, and they aren't shy of competing and are better than most Asian nations in several sports. I am sure they will do well.

Absolutely agree. I've always said that Olympic championships are made, not born. The idea of there being an "amateur" athlete is a thing of the past, they need money, infrastructure, coaching, etc. to succeed. Rich countries just have more to offer athletes to become great, it's a sad fact but a true one

A country not mentioned in this video but might be in you next is St Lucia, A small island in the Carribean of less than 200k people. Well, if they are on your list, remove them. Yesterday in Paris a young girl, from St Lucia upset the apple cart in the women's 100m by out running the world's best and winning a gold medal, the first and only medal her country has ever won. In an event that is second only to the men's 100m

@@lamelists Most people are talking about Sha'carri Richardson as the favorite to win in the 100 m event because of the absence of the Jamaican queens, Shelly-ann, Elaine, and Shericka. But Julien Alfred of St. Lucia crushed them all the other day with a long gap from the silver medalist Sha'carri

Bangladesh is poor, but is wealthier per capita than India and Pakistan.
@lamelists
@lamelists 3 ай бұрын
True, rich vs poor clearly plays a big part but it's not the whole story. In researching this video, I discovered a lot of it comes down to investment and infrastructure and where a country chooses to spend its dollars. Bangladesh just doesn't spend much money on developing athletes or providing the infrastructure needed for natural athletes to achieve at a global level (other than perhaps cricket, so maybe cricket coming to the games in 2028 will help?)

@@lamelists the UK has improved a lot in the medal table since the lottery came in and the money for good causes was used for athletes. The British spend millions on unpopular sports like tracked cycling which has lots of medals attached. Investment can bring results but South Asians are known for their love of cricket and don't think of other sports.
