I live in southern CA and used to go down to Baja Mexico periodically until I got stopped by a group of police officers who obviously had been tipped off by someone and were waiting for me as I walked up a street. They accused me of trying to buy drugs searched my pockets, stole $300 dollars I cash out of my wallet and let me go. Afterward I realized how easy it would have been for them to plant drugs on me throw me in jail and then extort thousands of dollars from my family. I'll never go back to Mexico.

@@markhyde9661 That may be part of it but there are a lot of desperate people in Mexico living in abject poverty. So they see a gringo come through and right away they stand out as a potential target. The only way I'd go to Mexico is if I had prearranged protection from the powers that be at the top of the food chain. A business associate of mine whose Columbian had a worse experience after he set up a furniture manufacturing shop in TJ. He would go down to pick up inventory once a month. He got kidnapped because apparently no one was allowed to operate a business unless it was approved by the local crime syndicate and he paid tribute $. They took his cloths off and tied him to a chair then used his ATM card to withdraw the maximum amount of $ from his bank account each day. When the bank account was empty my friend figured they would kill him. Fortunately he managed to untie himself after the guy guarding him fell asleep and escape by jumping out of a window. He didn't realize it was on the second floor but luckily he wasn't seriously injured. After that he called the guys at his shop and told them to keep everything that he was never going back to Mexico.

I was born and raised in Haiti, in 2nd grade the vice president’s daughter at my school got kidnapped and the ransom request was fulfilled. They still r*ped, cut up her body and threw her in a dumpster. Our entire school went to the funeral and we were all just scared to go to school for a while because she got kidnapped near the school. Months later another girl got abducted but released after the ransom was paid and so traumatized we never saw her back in school. Now we were REALLY panicking because we began to think that the kidnappers were targeting us because they think our families are rich because we’re in private school. We were covering up our uniforms in civilian clothes to go to school, changed into uniform for classes, then back to civilian clothes to walk or ride back home. My father’s cousin, the patriarch of his family, was kidnapped this year. We had to pay ransom 2x, unfortunately he was so traumatized after this experience, he got really sick and passed away a few weeks ago. This shit is no joke. There are a plethora of other scenarios I know of, those above are just the ones of people I actually knew.

We have family friends who were kidnapped. The patriarch - who was kidnapped two times but released him after the ransom was paid. His son was kidnapped when he got in his car without his bodyguards. No ransom was requested - he was just gone. They never saw him again. Five or six years later, a couple was hiking in the desert and found a headless skeleton (they decapitated him) - and then they found his skull at some other location. This happens so often there now that I refuse to travel there until this lawlessness is stopped.

In 2009 I travelled in Mexico with 4 more people (1 guy and 3 girls), all of us from Italy. We landed in Cancun, then rented a car and drove the whole way to Mexico City, where we took the flight back home. Never in 3 weeks did we feel unsafe and all the people we met were super nice and friendly. The only episode I remember was in MX City, while driving there the police stopped us and wanted to extort some money with a fake ticket, but the three girls were so wild and raging in their protesting that they just gave it up. :D

When I travelled in the 90s a bit my girlfriend, and I, purposefully only packed our most worn shoddy looking clothing. Anytime we talked to locals, took a cab, etc, we answered all the probative questions like we'd won the trip in a raffle, we were bummed out we couldn't afford the expensive drinks at the hotel so we were out looking for cheap local rum etc, stuff like that. It was probably not necessary, but we were even hoping to prevent being pick pocketed by making us look like pointless targets. People at the hotels gave us the stink eye a few times though when we were walking around the place in worn out jeans and torn shirts, lol. Mexico, Jamaica, and Cayman Islands we did this.

@@dionjeremy1711 I don't think it was necessary at any of the places. Friends warned us about pick pockets, so we were paranoid. In Cayman there were a lot of police patrolling, so I think there was likely particularly safe. Jamaica we took a cab to see some sights and the dude was super friendly and gave us a tour for almost 2 hours for only $10 (we gave him $40 once back at hotel). I never thought much of it until this video. I wonder if our fake story got us out of possible trouble. He even warned us where to avoid. I think he was cool and just a slow day though. I read a story of an American family holidaying on a cruise ship to Jamaica. Their daughter was abducted from the balcony while asleep. The local criminals abducted her & put her to work in a brothel. She told an American guy about her plight, but he did nothing to help. He only told some 20+ years later about her. He should have told the US embassy, but didn't. He could have saved her life, but didn't. I hope his conscience has caught up with him. She was never seen nor heard from again. The authorities wrote her off as dead. There must be so much police corruption in Jamaica that I got the impression the police did nothing over there. The police must be in cahoots & accept bribes from local criminals, turning a blind eye. What a miserable and shabby life for that poor wretch of a girl. She was a decent girl just on holiday. Her family had no closure. Third world countries can be so dangerous bcz of poverty, crime & corruption.

I've been to Caracas, Venezuela twice while visiting my in-laws. This was 2006-2010. It wasn't nearly as bad back then, but it was still really bad with the kidnapping situation. When I got picked up at the airport, the driver drove really fast. Later I found out that that made it easier to tell if they were being followed! I was hanging out with locals almost all the time, and it was quite alarming to hear how many of them had kidnapping or attempted kidnap stories. Anyone who is upper middle class or higher has serious security on their homes. Electric fences and armed gate guards are common. If they park on the street, I notice they hustle to get inside. It really is a shame what has happened to that country, because even in its decline, it was a very beautiful place and quite modern. Back in the 1950s through the 1980s it was a paradise.

I left Haiti in 2021. But when I was there, I had to go to school even under the constant stress of getting kidnapped (or even shot). I could not trust anyone on the streets of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti (also where most of the kidnapping happens). Sometimes you see the police, you tend to feel more scared than secured because there are some cases where the "police" are involved. I was always on the lookout, going to school. Even tho I took the taxi most of the time, I had to watch carefully where the driver was going. You CAN NOT lower your guard outside of your home 🙅🏾‍♂️(or even inside for that matter).

Brazil, it depends where you go in the country. It’s safer around São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and in a lot of the Southern, more touristy parts of Brazil. There’s still pickpocketing problems and the “trap” which involves being picked up by a taxi, and taken to someplace out of the city, and you have to pay to get back, but that can be avoided by using a reputable taxi service, and not something sketchy. But anywhere you go, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for your safety. You can get kidnapped just as easily in LA or NYC if you’re not paying attention. Probably more so, since you’re not expecting it in the US.

Lately part of Burma and Cambodia have joined this list. In the last year, at least 3 to 5000 people (most from China, Taiwan, HK, Malaysia, Indonesia, even Singapore) had been kidnapped there. The kidnapping gangs are so organized that they even has campus that houses more than 100 people. They have armed guards on these compounds and the local police (probably all paid off) wouldn't go near them. They put out ads on newspapers advertising jobs (for casinos, etc) and once you land there, they will have their armed thugs escort you to the compound. The ones that can pay the ransom, they actually will release them. The one can't, will either work as telephone scam artist or sex workers. And if you refuse to work, they are happy to sell your organs.

The U.S./gov website lists a dozen or more recommended steps to take 'if you decide to visit' countries in the No.4- Do Not Travel ranking. These include drafting a will, setting up documents to provide for the care of children and pets, power of attorney, a contingency plan to leave the country without embassy/government assistance, etc. Those seem pretty final to me; I would be out of my mind to travel to Yemen or Somalia or Central African Republic. I have visited Ensenada (swamped with souvenir vendors who were often 9 or 10 years old) and Jamaica (a 'reconsider travel' advisory, though I visited four times in the early 90's without incident).

Jamaica has NO RECORD of tourists being harmed or kidnapped in Jamaica even though the country receives nearly 5 million tourists annually. Crime in Jamaica has NOTHING to do with tourists or visitors. You people need to take information you read online with a grain of salt. You'd be surprised that some places in the US are worse than some of the places on this list.

@jamdawgutube
@jamdawgutube Жыл бұрын
@@traceylugg9707 , stay in your lane! You have not addressed my points. First of all, I have worked with the US Department of State and have done extensive research on the Caribbean and Latin America. Almost every country on earth has had some kind of kidnapping or crime. Jamaica issuing a state of emergency ("SOE"), which is a failed strategy the Jamaican government frequently uses to fight crime, is irrelevant to my points. If YOU had done YOUR research, you'd have discovered that crime in Jamaica is unrelated to tourists and preponderantly local-on-local or gang related. Even though Jamaica has been a tourism-dependent county for over 5 decades, welcoming close to 5 million visitors annually, there is no evidence to suggest that there is a pattern and practice of tourists being kidnapped or harmed in Jamaica. In fact, in all of my research, I have never come across any reputable (emphasis on "reputable") source that confirms that any tourist has been kidnapped in Jamaica. In my research, and my colleagues', I have come across roughly 3 tourists (give or take) who died in Jamaica because they got themselves involved with the wrong crowd or with the wrong person. You'd be surprised to learn that Bahamas, DR, and other Caribbean countries have a higher record of tourists being kidnapped, harmed, or killed in those countries than in Jamaica. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning, based on the historical EVIDENCE and statistics available, than being kidnapped or killed in Jamaica as a tourist. In fact, Jamaicans know the importance of tourism to their economy, and some of them would treat you like kings and queens when you visit. They'd even go out of their way, even though some of them would expect something in return, to protect you or safely show you around. Culturally, they frown upon crime against tourists- and they will dish out vigilante justice on any fellow countryman or woman who violates that unwritten rule. People always use the State Department reports to justify their false claims or complete misunderstanding of other countries' cultures. These reports have no nuance, and they should be taken with a grain of salt or supported with other sources. If the US were to issue reports for some states and cities here in the US, you'd never visit some of these states and cities.

Correction .Poisonous snakes are rated by the toxicity of the venom. Venomous snakes are rated by the amount of venom delivered. Therefore snakes can be rated as venomous and poisonous at the same time. And i's ability to kill will be rated on it's toxicity or amount of venom produced as to what was the cause of death, that was relevant to the death at the specific time. An this process can be used for just about any animal or crustacean and shell fish or insect in its description. "Oh i forgot ,narcissists also." Some of these carry much toxicity, and loads of venom. Handle at your own risk. These have exactly the same attack methods world wide and divided only into four related species .

I know you're using State Dept stats. I'm just wondering what criteria is being used to determine "kidnapping" because that can be a mixed bag. Example ... if the cops get called for a loud argument, and someone is taken away. If that argument involved putting an arm to block someone's exit. They can be charged with kidnapping. Even though the standards of what most people think of as kidnapping aren't met. Only the legal definition is.

As a brazilian, I must admit Brazil has a huge kidnap problem, sadly. But it depends on the location. Avoid big metropolis in the Northeast and Southeast regions. Small towns are usually safe. And the South region is quite good, actually! It's a region that is never shown at the TV but It's the best region in the country! Try and visit the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul!

I happen to know of someone who used to work for the Venezuelan state oil company. He took a visa to work in the Middle East. While finishing things up, as he had moved most of his stuff out except a car he had and had been away a few days, some people came looking for him. As all state oil workers have to pledge their allegiance to the ruling government, it was clear they were there for an enforced disappearance. Since they didn't find him, they stole the car he had left there and ransacked what was left in the house. He was gone within the week anyhow.
