Wanted to move to Seattle or Portland but the homelessness is a big turn off for me. If I want to deal with that i'll just stay in NYC. Seattle and Portland seem like they are worse off in that respect actually. NYC's homeless are often violent unprovoked though these days which doesn't seem the case for the homeless on the west coast

I have been talking about Rochester New York and the fact that it is so unfriendly it is unreal. And it is cold! They tend to misunderstand that friendliness and politeness are two completely different things. And like I said before this is a city that you have to have a ton of peripheral “friends” or you considered an odd ball. Very difficult to make friends here unless you went to high school or grade school with the locals. And forget about dating, only an hour away, Buffalo is more down to earth people are friendlier and it is easier to meet people.

I live in the Northeast, have been to all the cities that most consider to be very rude (Philly, NY, Boston, etc) and yet I found that the unfriendliest city I have ever been to is Atlanta. Was expecting some southern hospitality but was not quite impressed

Totally agree. I have lived in the northeast and the Atlanta metro. Although parts of the northeast may come across as rude, there are areas that are genuine friendly. Just don't expect the outward, phoneyness friendly found in hotlanta. People in the northeast try to value respect by not being too nosey because that comes across as being downright rude. Yes, some of them may flip u the bird on the highway but that goes with the territory. If they really got to know u which honestly can be very difficult, u can have a real, true lifelong friend that cares. Hotlanta and the surrounding metro has always been known as backstabbing territory. Yeah, they may be outwardly phoney friendly and very nosey as they treat u as a pin cushion voodoo doll. It all depends what u want and what u prefer many people from the northeast would not step a foot in hotlanta, skipping right down too Florida. Many do. Others from hotlanta would not want to even visit the northeast. As the saying, different strokes for different folks. Does one prefer phoneyness or realism? Personally found hotlanta a favorite among the show me the money crowd but once u max out the credit limit, u could hear crickets all the way to savannah.

I too am very surprised Seattle isn’t on this. Seattleites can be really awful unfriendly. Lived there many years so glad to get away from the rotten people. Live in LA now. Not so unfriendly but people are so self absorbed and judgmental. It’s about what kind of car you drive, what you wear and your social media presence. The stereotype about people being plastic is pretty true.

Seattle is very introverted and people don't go out of their way to interact with strangers but they don't go out of their way to be assholes either. We're known for being passive aggressive but not the type of overt rudeness you see in the north east.

Visited the DC area in the mid-90s TAD. Went to a store to buy some clothes I couldn't get where I was stationed. The woman behind the counter looked at me and said, "You're not from here, are you?" "How can you tell?" i responded. "You're smiling."

I spent 4 years at Tinker AFB, OK near OKC. The people there are among the friendliest I've seen anywhere in the US. I hated the place because of the flatness, that red soil, the summer humidity, Tornado Alley, crap winters. But, the friendliness of people there made my stay much more bearable.

Unfortunately, rents have skyrocket in many major metro. And Unfortunately, employers don't care to give more than a fifty cent raise, if ur lucky. Get a few of those and a couple years ur breaking the budget, put on the radar and kick out the door. I've seen it happen, many times. There no ethics or morales in corporations. It's an illusion propagated by brainwashing tactics.

I noticed that Seattle wasn't on the list, given that the "Seattle Freeze" is often mentioned. I found people in Seattle to be a mix. Most were cordial, but it isn't fake-friendly.

@@feliciasampson8032 I agree Seattle should have been on this list i think the only reason that it wasn't is because i think Briggs is from the Pacific northwest so there seems to be a little biased. I find that not only are people from Seattle rude but downright ignorant and stupid by choice.

i lived there for 30 years, and have been away for 10. it was kind of unfriendly when i was aged 25-35 (some agressive homeless people in and around the subway stations, general snobbiness from govt workers, lawyers, and political staff, a general sense of elitism, based on your job). ive heard from my relatives (who still live there) that it has gotten worse.

You get he was being sarcastic, right? I lived in D.C. for 15 years. I was done when I realized everyone on the subway was looking forward, miserable and one lady was crying. I didn't realize how unfriendly until I moved to FL and people actually spoke to me when passing! D.C. is dirty, full of snobs, panhandlers and politicians (oh, they're all the same). You can't change them by being friendly either; people will think you are insane (for real). I was 22-37 years old at the time.

I visited a friend who lived in Manhattan. People on the street were brusque and in a rush. But when he introduced me to his NYC friends, I was amazed at how friendly they were. They actually wanted to know all about me - something I've never experienced in California.

I had the opposite experience granted I was only visiting NY for a week but never really met any friendly people not all were unfriendly most were just indifferent. I remember trying to ask for directions or where I should go for a good meal & was either completely ignored or told I should've done some research. Which sounds logical but I rather hear from the locals not some travel channel I trust them more. Its like a critic review vs fan reviews on rotten tomato.

Flight attendant here. I live in NJ and work in Boston. I’ve been to every city featured here. The one thing I can say is people are people everywhere. Some nice. Some A-holes *shrugs*.. also New Yorkers are helpful. They may cuss you out or tease you but they WILL help you if you need it. They’re just in a rush and to the point, not necessarily mean/rude.

I found NYC, Brooklyn particularly, to be a very friendly place when I moved there 30 years ago. NYC isn't so much a giant city as it is a vast web of contiguous neighborhoods, each unique in character with wildly colorful citizens. It's the only place I've been where you can have an open, fun chat with a complete stranger in line at the PO, waiting for a bus, in a bodega... knowing you'll probably never see them again.

I was born and raised in NYC and when people ask for directions, I have always gone out of my way to explain to people how to get where they are going. It was like a sacred trust to help people enjoy our city. I am not the only New Yorker to do so. People from other countries have told me how kind people were to them. Sure, people are busy and there are millions of us, but most New Yorkers care. Maybe the people who were rude were from New Jersey.

I remember going into the grocery store and asking them ““where are the bananas? “I was already uncomfortable because from the south and the nice rude gentleman told me “they are where they always have been, “and I replied if I knew where they were, I wouldn’t have asked you. I am not surprised at this list at all and I think every state has good and bad places I truly know that and truly believe that and I tried to avoid cities and there’s no reason for people to be rude. People came together after September 11 but we’re so far gone from that, I’m glad to see the Texas Tennessee the Carolinas Virginia. Yeah those places work on your list although there are people that can be rude everywhere and they’re also people that can be helpful but you do have to be very careful today and why anybody would want to live in any of the places you mentioned is beyond me I do understand people get stuck places, but this is America and most of us are fairly free to move to another state except now I can’t afford it. I think it was overall a good list I don’t go to the city and I’m scared to death when I drive.

It's incredible how many PR agents and real estate agents there are in the comments here attempting to change public opinion on what everyone knows is the most unfriendliest city in the United States. Seriously, reading these fake commemts isn't going to change anybody's mind about NYC. It has always been (including it's greater metropolitan region) among the dirtiest and rudest places on Earth and has earned that reputation for good reason with LA and San Francisco being it's only close rivals in this regard. And it's no surprise also that they have very similar politics.

You were right Briggs about Orlando, FL. I'm from Melbourne, Australia and took my family to visit the theme parks at Orlando. I was just shocked to see how people over there were so rude and cold - the waitstaff, hotel staff, the clerks at the local pharmacy, even the guys at the souvenir shops. Other Aussies who visited that place had the same experience. I won't recommend visiting Orlando even to my worst mates.

I find NYC quite friendly. I’ve visited NYC often from the he 60’s to the present. New Yorkers have always been friendly… helpful with directions, holding doors for me etc. From every day people, tourists and city employees. They’re smart accepting not snobby

I was an Uber driver in Washington DC those five years and every time someone got into my car they had their earbuds in and never said a word to me. They were in their own little world.

I vote for Hartford, CT as the rudest. I was born and raised in Texas and took a job with a Hartford law firm. I had a mild accent and thought nothing of it. I had lawyers and staff actually make fun of my accent right in front of me (and of course when I wasn't around). Also, it was just common courtesy for me to say "Good Morning" when I saw my co-workers. They would either walk right by me or just stare at me without saying anything.

My wife and I visited New York several years ago and I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly people were. Yes, the F-bomb was dropped a lot but it wasn’t done to be offensive, it’s just how they talk. We stayed in Manhattan and did a lot of the typical tourist stuff. Most people were happy to give us directions (accurate ones even 😂) and a few even took the time to walk with us to make sure we found the places we were looking for. We also went to see three Yankees vs Red Sox games (been a Yankees fan since I was 8), sat in the bleachers and had the best time ever. The people took us in and made us feel very much a part of the crowd. I’m surprised San Francisco didn’t make the list. My wife was from there and I lived there for 4 years and hated it the whole time. Other than the Irish community (she’s first generation Irish American) everyone was just rude as hell.

San Francisco can seem like a cold city at times. I worked there for years. I enjoyed my time there, but found people in San Mateo County to be more uppity and not all that friendly when compared to The City. When I first moved to the Bay Area, I found a place in Daly City. My Marin County friends were horrified. I didn't know there was zip code shaming until I moved there! I lived in Tahoe for many years. More and more people from Silicon Valley and East Bay have moved there. The whole vibe has changed...I don't want to say in a bad way, but I remember the small town feeling, and regularly running into people I know. The last few times I was there, I saw perhaps one person I recognized.

Have to agree with you. Maybe years ago New York or Manhattan might had been rude. Many seem in a great hurry & will give you directions. Just make sure you understand why they explained or don't ask questions on their response! I was clearly lost on the subway one time...being on the wrong platform to where I wanted to be. Needless to say I appeared lost & got directions with no problem from someone I didn't even bothered to ask.

Though there are yes counties that can come on a bit more rude then others, San Francisco for yes being a tourist town aren't as friendly as one might think. @@georgegong6813 I agree. We lived in the Avenues, on Rivera, right beside St. Ignatious (sp?) and would often take walks through the neighborhood. Being from the south I was raised to speak to people, they would almost always act as if you didn’t exist when you said hello. After moving back home, my wife couldn’t believe how friendly people were. I’ve never felt that kind of rude, arrogant behavior anywhere in the south, we’ll excluding Atlanta but then that’s not the south anyway.

There are some studies that correlate sympathy and population density. The more densely populated an area the more unsympathetic people become. That's why rural people tend to be more polite and friendly than urban people.

Another entertaining video from my fave KZbinr! My thoughts: My bf and I were in Washington DC in 2000. We went to Madam's Organ in Adam's Morgan one night and there was no available seating. A couple invited us to sit with them...they could not have been more friendly. We had a blast thanks to the local hospitality! Actually, we met lots of friendly people, but we might have gotten lucky. I lived in the Los Angeles area for several years...mostly the beach towns in the South Bay. It was a mixed bag for sure. I did encounter a lot of snobbishness over area codes, cars, physical attractiveness...the usual superficial stuff. But I also loved my work, riding my bike on the Strand, and having some great friends. Boston and New York...it's a different way of communicating. I'm a hybrid of Boston and California. I "get" Bostonians and New Yorkers...I can drop an f-bomb with the best of 'em! Philly? They crushed the 49ers 40-8 on my wedding day and I never forgave them (SF did come back to win the Super Bowl that season....neener neener neener). The NFC championship last month caused major PTSD, so seeing KC kick that field goal late in the 4th quarter was so validating!

I lived in The Dalles, Oregon for a year. The unfriendliest place I have ever lived. I rented a house in a middle-class neighborhood, and none of my neighbors would talk to me. A wave would be greeted by a glare and a back turn. Walking my dog down the sidewalk was met with rude nasty comments by numerous neighbors, even though he didn't even step on their grass. My wife fell in depression and went home to Florida. One of the most beautiful places I've lived, but by far the worst.

When tourists go to NYC they expect the residents to be rude and actually get upset when clerks, wait staff, taxi cab drivers, etc. are friendly and out going as they often are. I think New Yorkers put on the rude chadrade to please the visitors.

I experienced several cold feelings myself visiting DC. Yes a lot of Security & Law Enforcement around. Maybe it's because after 9/11. Though they don't make tourists feel a bit friendly @ all. Wasn't even involved in any negative police contact involving an investigation either. Would never visit again if I can.

You never know that employee might have saved you from being yelled at by multiple customers. 😂 But yeah in all seriousness that is pretty unprofessional by the employee. I remember working at a Walgreens in my hometown of Santa Rosa and I'd say in general people in Santa Rosa are pretty neutral. I'm not going to say that they are friendly but I wouldn't say that they are rude either, but there are a fair share of rude people here, but this one guy who I was working with at Walgreens was constantly rude. Not in the way where he would like to yell at people or anything, it's just that you can totally tell he was completely miserable and hated working that job. He complained all the time and just had this tone in his voice of like this extreme hopelessness and attitude. I'd actually take anger and yelling above how he handled things. It was just depressing to be around him. Sometimes he would actually raise his voice at customers but typically he just talked in a very depressing tone and had such a depressing attitude. Sometimes he'd say rude things to me when I'm trying to help a customer and claim that I'm being too slow up my job when something happened that wasn't even my fault because the stupid scanner at the counter is doing a really shity job of actually scanning the item. Or I have to verify the customers age if they're purchasing alcohol and this guy would actually claim I'm too slow at the job even though it wasn't even my fault. He was just such a miserable depressing guy to work with. I'm glad I didn't have to work at that Walgreens for very long before finding a different job

If a person is acting suspiciously, approaching them by offering to help is MUCH more effective than simply staring at them. Additionally, NOTHING WILL ESCALATE a dangerous situation faster than BEING RUDE!

The secretary at my home church (Sherri) also works at Walgreens; just before my dad’s birthday, she was checking out a 92-year-old who was buying alcohol, & the customer said he had run out of Birth-DAY control pills 😂. So, when Sherri made my dad a birthday card, she wrote in it “Be sure to stock up on Birthday control pills!”

You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned tourism. Cities, especially the seasonal tourism types tend to be either phony to outsiders or outwardly unfriendly. Seasonal places typically don't foster the best lifestyles because of their unstable economies leading to problems which I wont go into.

I'm from NY born and raised. There are a lot of assholes, yes but ask most New Yorkers for directions and they stop everything they are doing to help you, even if we are succinct and terse. There's just so many people here and so little time to get where you're going (often we're on foot or at the mercy of public transportation) so it's impossible to be nice to everyone for no reason. Also, just like you said, there are many conmen and sketchy people, anyone who is too nice to you is likely running a scam or trying to rob you so we are way less likely to chat with people we don't know out of self preservation

Trust me New Yorkers are people with heart. I've lived on west coast for 20+ years the people are superficial, flakey, uninteresing and frankly will back stab you in heart beat. NYers tell you to your face if they have a problem which is kind in fact. I've seen people on the west coast be extremely cruel to be honest and they are clueless about what's going on in the world at large NYers have to deal with the real difficulties of life! That's my honest experience I've lived in many many places and traveled world wide as well.

I visited NYC in the 90's, and it was VERY friendly! Much more than Seattle where I was living at the time. I even went into Gucci wearing my sleeveless flannel and Dr. Martins, and I was treated like gold. Same at Bloomingdales. Plus, I made a guys year when I was lost and late for a rehearsal at Carnegie Hall and asked for directions. He started laughing and said, "I've waited my whole life for this, PRACTICE!" 🤣

I've lived in LA and other parts of California for much of my life. People in Los Angeles were mostly friendly. On the other side of the country, Tennessee to be exact, people were extremely unfriendly. I was verbally and physically attacked there. Otherwise, I believe the unfriendliness has to do with not tolerating outsiders more than anything. I also have had wonderful times visiting Detroit. But then I'm much different than many of you watching this video.

LA is the land of actors where people are quite good at faking friendliness and will talk trash about you behind your back the minute you're out of sight. I'm from L.A & won't lie & say there's no unfriendly people here because there are but from my experience there's more friendly people than unfriendly. For me walking by some1 & greeting each other is normal same goes for people holding the door for each other starting conversations with strangers isnt any outta the ordinary. Just today I was at the market & me & my bro struck up a conversation with a lady behind us because I had moved my stuff out the way so she can put her items on the belt (I normally would've let her cut since she only had maybe 5 items but I was already being rung up when she got on line). Now for 8 years I lived in TX in the Dallas/ Ft Worth area & I ran into more rude people in those 8 years then 30 years here in L.A . Literally the 1st week I moved there I had an incident where I had seen a older Latina lady so I said hola Buenos dias (hello good day in Spanish) the lady in a very condescending way said this is America speak English. Now I get some people don't speak it but she could've just said sorry I don't speak Spanish even tho most probably know Buenos dias. The only reason I said in Spanish is because she looked straight out the boat(in Spanish we say "tenia el nopal en la frente") another time at the same apt complex I was trying to pull into a parking lot & some girl got on front saying that parking was for her bf. I said nicely that there was no assigned parking suddenly her whole family is out there trying to intimidate me into complying even threatening me & my car. Those are just 2 cases in maybe 3 months mind you when I first moved there I didn't know any2 besides by sister & her family so I spent most my times indoors. Now I did run into alotta nice people & had some pretty good friends

Honestly, NYC, you can find friendly, helpful people. I was in the wrong highway lane and couldn't get over to take the exit I needed. I ended kinda getting pushed over into a different exit lane and was driving around trying to figure out how to get back to where I needed to go. (One way streets weren't helping). I spotted some dudes hanging out on the street. I pulled over, hopped out of my car and asked for directions. They were friendly and super helpful. Handsome too. Of course, this was back in 2005. So, I concede it could have gone down hill since then.

Heck, I was a tourist and I accidentally dropped my watch on the subway. A gentleman picked it up and said, "Excuse me, miss, I think this is yours." I've had occasion to visit fairly regularly, and rudeness has been very rare. (On NYC terms, of course. There is a different behavioral expectation there than in, say, a little town ten counties over.

The "Rude New Yorker" is just a stereotype mainly reinforced by movies looking for a little chuckle in the script. I grew up in the NYC metro area and have returned many times over the years because it's one of my favorite places to visit. The residents may be a little abrupt at times, but they are generally the least judgemental people you'll encounter. I'd also say that it's more likely that they'll express their pride in being a New Yorker without denigrating people from other places.

I don't dispute these suggestions...however....when I stayed in New York I was greeted by 100% friendly people. Everyone, from the taxi drivers to the Police officers to the people in the street....every single person seemed at pains to be helpful and welcoming. I'm English and several people mentioned my accent. Possibly that helped? Either way, so many people made an effort to be polite I just though I'd write a quick post to make that clear. I loved living in Boston. I grew up in New England. If you were not born and raised there, you will always be an outsider. I love the accent. But when you make a friend in Boston, they're your friend for life. I've also loved living in NYC. I enjoy the directness. You always know where you stand with folks in NYC. I found people on San Francisco shallow, fake and smug. I lived there for 15 years, would never move back. I'll take the East Coast over the West Coast any day.

a man coming to visit me in NJ from Nashville who never traveled to the north, flew into Laguardia and took a cab to Grand central station, only to be told he was in wrong station. he needed Pennsylvania station. I think the South Bay is probably more friendly. I was in the fitness industry and moved to Playa del Rey following teaching gig in Japan. People recommended I talk to the owner of one of the most famous fitness studios in LA (which will go unnamed ). The studio owner was one of the coldest, most arrogant people I've ever met. I went to her studio as a paying customer and she treated me like dirt. I never forgot that. I went on to have a great career, thanks to some awesome mentors. While I was group exercise director of a South Bay club, I made sure to be kind and welcoming to every instructor who sought a job.

Same here! I’ve come to the conclusion that LA folks have an aversion to genuine people. It’s been said that the more real you are, the less friends you have. People here are not about friendships, but rather business and networking. I find that to be very fake, and I’m looking forward to relocating.

I moved to Seattle in 1975. It was a wonderful place to live. I described it as a big city with a small town atmosphere. I remember that the locals were very concerned that the California culture would migrate up the coast. Their worst fears were realized. Seattle has changed but not for the better. 🥲

Andyjay, I took a job in W. Seattle. It was mixed as to how nice people were, but some of my coworkers hated me from the moment we met. They went out of their way to make sure my work life was unpleasant.

Seattle is by far the unfriendliest city Ive seen. In Seattle, people literally avoid eye contact, I think you have to be in a clique to get some humanity there. In Portland Oregon on the other hand, I had friendly conversations everywhere. Of course, you want to avoid both cities in this post-Floyd era; stick to the suburbs.

It’s interesting because when I lived in O-town always felt people were unfriendly or fake social. Felt really isolated and visited a small town in the west. Manners were completely different and decided to move. People in the midwest are just happy…. Much happier than big cities like Orlando.

The friendliest city in the world that I visited was Rome, Italy. I had Italians telling that Rome was rude and even dangerous. I had the most amazing experience. Everyone was awesome even in poor so called " Dangerous neighborhoods " people were so cool and so friendly. That was my experience.

I knew New York would be number 1. I used to do landscaping work for an older man from Queens and he screamed at me for everything. I thought he hated my guts but he later said I was the best worker he ever had. That’s when I realized that that’s just how people in that area are, but it came as a shock to me, being from Texas where people are much friendlier.

I’ve been all over the US and found rude people everywhere. As a New Jersey native I find the stereotypes comical when someone asks where I’m from. I travel to some very remote places and find it amusing when people question why you are vacationing “here”.

We have some friends who live near Sommerville (sp?) that I've visited twice. It was a pretty place with lots of deer and such. The folks there were quite nice. I think NJ gets a bad rap, maybe due to the big cities? We also went to Basking Ridge which was very nice.

I've been to Oklahoma City numerous times and have had no negative encounters there. Same with Las Angelas where I have relatives. All of my trips to Las Vegas have been business trips for conventions and all have gone well. On my last trip to Washington D.C. I simply enjoyed visiting the national landmarks and the history associated with them. I've never been to Detroit but have had good relations with people from there. In the late 90s I spent a week in New York City and stayed in a well known hotel between Times Square and Central Park. This was also for a scheduled conference and I was pleasantly surprised by the visit. I enjoyed a musical comedy and walk through Central Park.

I can tell you from personal experience that the top two unfriendly cities are spot on! I lived in the Philadelphia area most of my life and I've been to New York city numerous times. I don't expect to ever visit either of those two cities ever again in my lifetime if I can help it.

I LOVE THIS LIST, BRIGGS!!!! I lived in Orlando for 20 years before moving up north a bit. They belong on this list because they don't care unless you are a tourist and are spending lots of money. The drivers in Orlando are something else. I grew up in the Capital District of NY. I moved down to Orlando and everyone was complaining about how bad NY drivers are. I responded, " New Yorkers may drive like they've had 3 pots of double Espresso and 3 hits of Acid, but they still drive better than ANYONE in Orlando. Orlando where you will never see a car without a scratch or ding, and turn signals are optional.

I lived in New York for 2 years. People were very helpful. Whenever I had to ask for directions, everyone was very helpful. When I slipped and fell on an icy road, someone helped me back up, and asked if I was ok. The best way I found to ingratiate yourself with New Yorkers is to talk about food.

When we went to NYC in 2020, I was a little worried. I had heard they were rude. Fortunately that was not what we experienced. There was this one gentleman who went way out of his way, locating transit staff to unlock elevator to get us to the Amtrax depot. Actually helping us find it too. If it hadn't been for him we would have missed our train back. I am not sure if we didnt get the rudeness because I was in a wheelchair but seems to me they were overall more helpful and kind then rude.

Gotta correct your NYC segment. IF, you're talking about Manhattan, I totally agree. But as an ex-Brooklynite I gotta tell you it's quite friendly in Brooklyn. Depending, of course, on the specific neighborhood you choose. When I lived there, neighborhoods to avoid were Ft. Greene, Ocean hill/Brownsville, Red Hook, Bed-Sty, Sunset Park, DUMBO, Williamsburg, East NY and Coney Island. Some swell areas were Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and Midwood.
