Whenever my husband and I are doing nothing, we call it existing. Like well say “I’m going to just exist today”. It makes me feel like existing is still important, certainly sounds better than “doing nothing”. May be silly but hey, whatever works! 😬

My tip for instantly waking up in the morning is eyedrops. I keep rewetting drops on the nightstand and have found that a single drop in each eye when the alarm goes off is a game changer-the alertness is instant. It also feels nice for dry eyes. 😎

My favorite tip for not procrastinating on little tasks is a sort of mantra/reminder: If it takes less than a minute, it's worth doing now. Here's an example: if I notice the towels in my bathroom aren't folded how I like them, I know that that will take *seconds* to do and will reward me instantly with a nicer looking space, so I just do it immediately, no matter what else is going on or if I'm in the middle of something. If a task seems borderline on if it'll take over a minute, I count the seconds as I do the task to see if it does take longer. If it does, I know going forward that that task can take longer than I expect, and if I finish it in under a minute I know I can remember for next time that it's a quicker task than I expect. Also I nearly always finish whatever it was in under a minute. My *other* favorite anti-procrastination method is changing when I define a task as "done". This works in two ways, the "that's done well enough", to keep my perfectionism at bay, and "that's not done yet" as in there are more steps to the process still. For example: I'll bring groceries home, get them out of the car and into the kitchen. For me it's not two tasks of "Bring groceries inside" and "Put groceries away", it's "Bringing groceries home isn't done until I've put them away". Not sure I've explained these very well but they work for me and I really like them!

About the phone: read the book “How to Break Up With Your Phone.” It’s written by a woman with kids so it’s actually realistic and relatable! I’m working on reducing my phone use as well. The phone goes off at 10pm but I need to use it even less before that. My husband doesn’t have issues with using his phone and isn’t addicted, so if there’s a true emergency someone can reach us via his phone. He doesn’t turn it off at night. We have all notifications turned off except phone calls so there’s nothing bothering us.

I’ve been a very chatty cathy my whole life and recently got diagnosed with adhd. I’m trying to be more mindful about how I share myself in conversation, without talking right over the other person. Journaling little thoughts “dear diary” style has really helped me get a lot of my excitement out so I can be a better listener and ask better questions.

I haven't been diagnosed with ADHD(tho I probably have it tbh) but I do the same thing in conversations and it's something I'm working on changing. I once had my partner tell me that I didn't really listen to others when talking to them and that's really helped me to see it from a different angle and work on it.

Couple of things that helped me - 1. The Calm app. This has been a revelation. I love the soundscapes for helping to fall asleep, and if I wake up in the night, instead of mindlessly scrolling I choose a soundscape (rain on trees is my fave) and it quietens my mind. The app can also give you “time to go to bed” prompts. 2. I have a rule that if a task takes less than 15 mins, do it now, don’t put it off. when you think of it as a 15 min task it doesn’t seem so daunting and the “rule” makes me hold myself accountable. 3. I do a workout first thing after I wake up. I love the feeling of achieving something before I even start work. It sets me up for a more successful day. Appreciate morning workouts aren’t for everyone so this could be adapted to a different morning task, such as, setting a load of laundry to finish at the time you wake up the night before, then hang it out to dry or pop it in the dryer as your first task. It feels great to get a task completed as soon as you set foot out of bed! I love these videos, thank you for sharing!

I'm well known with my family and friends for being late and I realized it's because I always overestimate what I can do in a day, and along with that I always underestimate how long it will take me to get places. So I've started tacking on 15 minutes to the time I tell people I'll meet them/be ready and now it's a much more accurate guess of when I'll be somewhere. I'm less anxious getting places and it's more respectful to who I'm meeting. I also feel like I can't be the only one who does that so maybe it will help someone else!

Absolutely. The making the bed one was a big one for me... it truly sets the tone of “okay, let’s start the day” & I feel more relaxed whenever I go through or into my room see it nicely made. I do think we should give ourselves Grace days as well. Especially during this time. Don’t feel bad if one day every so often, you completely drop all expectations of yourself... sleep in, keep your jammies on, treat yourself to a bottle of wine (in the comfort/safety of your home) and enjoy way too much screen time... again, not things you want to make a habit of, but have the Grace to know you don’t need to be perfect.

I definitely need to work on getting more sleep. I’m a chronic night owl and most of my “me time” happens at night, so I never want to stop what I’m doing and go to bed. But I turned 30 this year and I’ve been doing this for over a decade, and I know it’s taking a toll on me physically, and will only get worse for me if I keep it up. Another thing I want to do (a habit to add rather than break) is to regularly journal. I’ve been doing it occasionally and it really helps me clear my head and make sense of my emotions, so I want to do it more.

I set an actual clock alarm, and it sits on my dresser across my room. The alarm being across the room has helped me SO much! I don't even think about it anymore. I get straight up. And I did train myself to wake up earlier and earlier and going to bed early, too. Just throwing tips out there. I have my habits that need broken, but I have worked on myself so much over the past couple years, as I'm a recovering heroin addict and recovering alcoholic.🙂 Also; oh boy, I'm definitely a procrastinator!

I do all those things; less phone, more water etc etc. And believe me....when you replace the bad habits with mentally and physically healthier ones your body thanks you exponentially and it’s all the encouragement you need! Might I also share what has added to my personal happiness and contentment. I find grateful moments in everything! Even in traffic! Like, Thank you for the traffic, maybe the universe is slowing me down to avoid a future accident I may have been in. When you can find even the smallest thing to be grateful for you are infinitely happy. Applause for you that your figuring out so much earlier than me. And just know, that “doing nothing” IS doing something. 😘

The new habit that I have been trying to create is a deeper prayer & bible study habit. My faith is always been important to me but I have really challenged myself to put my time and effort there. I joined an online weekly bible study to help me have connection, accountability, and fun with learning the bible. I have also been starting my day first with something that will grow my faith before I do anything else. Some days it is to say a prayer, listen to a favorite song, or even IG stories of my pastor for that day. Just to get myself mentally focused on God. I have really seen a difference in my life in the past couple of weeks. : )

This is probably my favorite video you've ever done. I recently have been trying to change things about myself or my habits but I didn't necessarily look at it the same as you. Now, I feel like i can sit down and make a list of things to work on the same way you have instead of thinking "I should change this" as it is happening. I feel it is more helpful for me to already know what I need to be working on instead of figuring it out as I go.

I have recently put away the phone and stopped watching television at least 30 minutes before going to bed because it was impacting my sleep. I totally agree about the pajamas. I am an elementary school teacher who has been working from home since March and now will be continuing to work at home through at least the end of January. I have a closet full of clothing and shoes that I have barely touched since March. I finally forced myself to start putting on make up and “dressing up” to go to the grocery store because wearing pajamas every day was not helping my mental health. I also need to work on procrastinating the little things. You are definitely not alone! 😊

There’s a million habits I could be working on, but one that I’ve been successful with for almost a whole year is not biting my nails! I started in second grade and I never thought I’d be able to quit, but I stopped last September so my nails would look good for my best friend’s wedding and never started up again! For anyone else who has the same bad habit, what worked for me was turning the process of caring for my nails into a luxurious self care moment and treating myself to a new (inexpensive) nail polish every few months. Now I keep my nails painted when I never could before and it feels amazing!

Trying to be a better person while being the mom of a toddler is hard!! I am just getting out of my first trimester with my 2nd pregnancy. I've let myself establish a lot of bad habits during this time just to survive. Getting out of my pajamas first thing has helped me a lot this week, as well as making sure I'm getting up earlier than my daughter. It helps me feel a little more put together to start my day with me time. My husband and I have also been trying to a) go to bed earlier haha and b) make sure we read at least a little scripture together before bed. It has helped my mindset a lot.

Love this!!! One habit I need to break is instant buy when it comes to online shopping. It's so easy for me to see something in a video or scrolling online and just click and buy, giving into my instant gratification. I need to work on taking the time to think about those purchases before clicking. Like if I'm still thinking about it and checking on it after 2 or 3 weeks, then commit. Also the pajama thing. I work the second shift at work, so i start at 5 pm which is just so easy somedays to just wait until I get dressed for work to change. I need to be better at just changing in the morning then changing again 7 hours later for work. It's silly to spend all day waiting for work.

I have found that my Fitbit versa has allowed me to keep my phone further away because it vibrates when my phone is ringing (when connected to the internet) and so I know I won’t miss a call, even if my phone is in another room. Many of your items on your list are also on mine! For me, I need to drink more water. I breast feed and pump so it really has killed my energy levels. Take care and stay safe!

Really great video! I’ve recently started using a habit tracker in my planner to keep track of small little habits I want to start, break or change. Just helps me see what needs attention and feel like I get extra accountability and “credit” for progress! One tiny thing- in the intro you started by saying you know they would make you a “better” and then continued “happier, healthier” person. I just want to agree that it is great to work in ways to ADD health, joy, remove stress- but you’re already a GOOD fully worthy person exactly as you are with these habits. ;) Life is always about growing and learning- it’s good to be honest about where you want to change but moving backwards or stumbling makes you no less “good.” ❤️❤️❤️

I love the title! You might want to look into a chicory drink or some other caffeine free coffee alternative for later in the day. 🍵

Great video Jess! Thank you for being so vulnerable. My habit I need to break is definitely coffee NOT stopping neck no lol just reducing and also using chips & salsa as my crutch for a bad day! Cause girl I ate a whole bag yesterday 🙈

I really enjoyed this video, Jessica. It's honest and a great reality check for me to think about areas that have slipped a bit in life whereI can take back some control. So much of the world is out of control at the moment, this gentle reminder of things we can change is really helpful. Big love from Melbourne. x

Definitely relate to the phone problem - YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I was also with you about a year ago on the alcohol during the week thing where after work, I cracked a beer or had a glass of wine. Now I do Sunday (mostly) - Thursday no alcohol and drink on Friday nights and Saturdays. It's definitely helped my mindset with how I don't necessarily need alcohol to wind down or relax. Also, I'm a week shy of eliminating caffeine for a month. I will 100% go back to drinking coffee in smaller amounts after the month is up, but I wanted to sensitize my body to it so that less could do more #ifyouknowwhatimean. Thank you as always for your honesty in these types of videos.

While watching your video I stopped to do a task I’ve been putting off and dreading. Now it’s done and I feel lighter. Thanks for making this video - I can relate to most of these!!

I love this so much and needed to hear this today! For me my job is stressful right now (nurse) so I’ve been trying to get into a better headspace before I go to work: doing things like meditating, eating healthy and working out. Helping myself instead of wallowing and doing things that aren’t good for me!

Relaxing is something I’m trying to do too. I’m constantly thinking of what I COULD be doing, like reading, organizing, cleaning the dishes, laundry, or finding a cure to cancer. I need to stop thinking these things and just relaaxxxx

Great reminder - makes you think, for sure! I’m trying to spend more time reading, and less time on my phone just dinging around. Used to complain that I never had time to read a book anymore - well, put the phone down and do it! 🙄

Thank you for admitting this stuff. Procrastinating, staying in pyjamas, and being late really hit home. I feel less bad about myself knowing a successful person like you also has these habits.

This list could absolutely be my list! Good luck with these. How about a 6 month update on how you’re doing?

I think this is a great list, I gave up caffeine 10 years ago and it was the best habit I have ever broken, but I still need to work on the going to bed late and staying on my iPad/iPhone too long.

This was a great video and very timely for me as I am sitting down this very weekend to put this type of list together for myself. I want to be a better me, and I know I deserve to treat myself better. I am also adding that I will either read or listen to at least one self-help/improvement book a month and listen to at least one podcast geared towards this same subject matter each week. So, mine is more about 10 good habits I want to start for myself and not focusing on what I want to stop.

Nice video - similar habits we all share I’m sure. I find getting up at 8am, making the bed, throwing a load in the washer and showering before 9am sets the tone for my day.

Mine are definitely procrastinating (especially on quick tasks) and going to sleep earlier. I read somewhere on the internet a few years ago that said if you strive to be somewhere 5-10 minutes early, you’ll never be late. I adjusted my leave times to fit that concept and it’s really worked for me. Might be something for y’all to try. 😊

Literally, every single one of those habits are ones Im trying to break. Trying to become a better person, one task at a time!

I used to drink an angry orchard or truly every night and I stopped doing that and replaced it with a sparkling water. It is CRAZY how much better my sleep and energy levels are during the week. I’ve been doing the same thing, only drinking on the weekends or a special occasion. It’s made me feel so much better.

I love this! Some of these I hadn’t thought about how they’re effecting me. A bad habit for me would be not taking the 5 minutes a night to tidy up around the house

Turn off your notifications on social media! The only notifications I get are email, phone, text, and fb messenger bc a lot of people get ahold of me on there. This has helped SO much.

LOL. What's left? Instagram and Twitter? :)
@renej34874 жыл бұрын
Woman of a Certain Age KZbin, Snapchat, Facebook notifications, podcasts and all the other stupid apps you have like crave, Sephora, Fitbit, etc. The only time I get a notification is when someone is trying to actually get a hold of me, not when KZbin is telling me someone uploaded or someone liked my picture on insta. It really helps you out your phone down and stay away from it
@womanofacertainage58924 жыл бұрын
@@renej3487 Ah, got it! I avoid putting stupid apps like those on my phone -- hence was perplexed. LOL! I really do think we'd all be happier and less stressed if we all stopped reacting to notifications all the time. (We = people in general in the US and elsewhere.)

I agree so much with a lot of these. I am also trying to lower my phone usage and also getting out of my pjs each day. When it comes to the keeping busy habit I love to sit outside with nothing and just be.

I’m trying to break the habit of constantly thinking about everything I have to do and getting overwhelmed instead of focusing on just one task and then feeling good about accomplishing it. As it stands right now I feel like I’m never doing enough and I want to change that. Your video really got me thinking about other things I’d like to change... thank you!

I've heard others say making a check list and then checking it off helps them stay on task and then seeing it checked off makes then feel accomplished. Even if the task is small.
