@NUSKish6 жыл бұрын
Your grandfather was a brave man, with the twin risks of collapse and explosion that are uniquely high in coal mines. I would not go in there. I love the comments on here. I do have to say, what the cameras don't get across is the FEELING of caving. Its pure isolation. You are so far away from people. Only those with you and who know the cave well enough to get supplies to you can find you. For some people, that's terrifying. But for others, like myself, it's one of the best ways to get AWAY. Some people go to the mountains, and some people go under them. Furthermore, the tight squeezes really aren't that bad. Honestly, if you aren't claustrophobic, it is just a matter of assessing them and getting through them. Nothing to it. Again, this is coming from someone who loves doing this kind of stuff. For some people, there is no fun involved and it just ends up miserable.
@NUSKish4 жыл бұрын

@user-dd4fv6qj8g4 жыл бұрын
@Lucas Miller It really depends on the cave. Above all, I have to say; if you are interested in trying out caving, do not go it alone. Going into a cave by yourself is super dangerous, hence the caveat in my earlier comment regarding "those with you." But, that's just the disclaimer I have to say before answering :). As for your body type, how flexible are you? I am just shy of 6' and make my way through the caves in my county with relative ease when wearing the proper gear. I actually lead spelunking tours of a local show cave, and my test for muscular gentlemen is to ask them to extend their arms and reach above their heads. Generally, if you can readily bring your hands together above your head when extended, you should be fully capable of the squeezes in the cave I work at, and I'd love to see you give it a shot! That being said, some of the squeezes showcased in this video were INTENSE. I would definitely qualify this cave as more expert-level, especially considering they were going into unexplored tunnels. I hope that answers your question :) .

Just to let you know that seeing your shit pile pics isn't the only thing I "saw" on this video. I saw so much more. I saw the peace and the beauty ,the tranquility and the mystery,the wonder and the burning question of "what is just around those rocks there in the distance ??" I saw the pride and contentment that comes with a day of successfully caving and the knowledge that all your crew are safe. The cave is beautiful.....it is a place where time stands still.

going beyond the "i really dont understand what fun would this be given the dangers" blah blah your courage is off the charts of course. I have always wondered about what is the cave entrance gets blocked or water rushes in etc. Unfounded fear maybe but well. I once tried my hands at training for caving (wooden box thing in which you crawl through to learn the technique of squeezing the chest as you move etc). realized i was way too claustrophobic and that was the end of my caving career. :D

I think you lack imagination, and apply an overly narrow definition to what you consider normal. Apart from seeing unique aspects of nature, cave exploration (like anything that's genuinely demanding) gives you insight into your friends and not least yourself. Insight that cannot be gathered by simpler, more comfy ways.

You guys got to be nuts doing this. I would make sure to bring a bag of fentanyl to inhale if cave collapsed around or I got stuck in a small opening unable to get out. They say within 2 min. You just fall asleep feeling pretty good then adios.

Anyone knows how the air is down in such a cave?
@NUSKish6 жыл бұрын
If the cave has multiple openings then you get a draft and good air. This is quite usual. Caves with a single opening "breathe" when outside pressure changes. Caves in volcanic areas can contain lethal gases. These are generalisations, beware of exceptions.
@eliaslundstedt56074 жыл бұрын
Well I can tell you that the air is very damp especially when its a mine. I have been in a long abandonned mine on a tour and we went maybe 250 m into the mountain horizonatally and 400 vertically. And yeah, cold and wet air

@NUSKish7 жыл бұрын
One of the few redeeming features of a tight cave like this, is that you actually don't need all that much light - there are no wide open spaces. Also, modern cameras have amazing sensitivity (at the cost of dynamic range unfortunately). That said, I burned about 6 AA batteries per day for personal light and cameras; as well as having another six 18650-size 3Ah lithium cells for the "film light", a 600-lumen Lupine Tesla. The AA's were Energizer Ultimate, a single-use lithium battery with about 3Ah in it, and the best I've come across. I used them to drive a USB charger, since everything today is rechargeable. On my first trip to Castleguard Cave in the Rockies in 1994 the budget was 3 D-cells per day, just for personal light. Today is better :-)
@MrThenry19887 жыл бұрын
NUSKish I was wondering how many batteries you brought. Thanks. Nice work. Much respect
@NUSKish6 жыл бұрын
See above - times 10 days + a little margin. One of the reasons I use lots of disposable AA's as the power source is that it's easy to track consumption, rather than having some monster powerbank where it's much harder to know what's inside.
@NUSKish6 жыл бұрын
AD ASTRA This trip was very special due to duration and need to save weight. DIsposable AA have 50% more energy and weigh 10g less per cell. I saved 300g this way, same as two freeze-dried meals.

I could see some of those passages were a real mind game to figure which hand and foot to put where and when and wondering if it'll work. And the fear of getting your arms pinned between your body and the rock wall. Or arms pinned overheard. I've been in a couple tight squeezes that I wasn't sure I was going to get out of. I stopped doing that stuff because I have notoriously bad luck. No sense pushing it ! :)

A single moment of realization of how far into the cave they are would set off such panic. Only certain people can do things like this. I would panic 5 meters in. I need lots of space and the idea of not being able to get out in a very long time would send me into severe panic. Fair play you all of you but you are pure nuts.

Very rarely. It has happened to me, never while inside the cave, and never really seriously. But then, if I weren't confident of managing it I wouldn't go, and that translates to the subconscious as well (or it's the other way round). Preparation is important, mental at least as much as physical.

Thank you, too. Such caves are tens of thousands of years old, so they are extremely stable. You can also see that from the absence of rubble on the floor, what falls down stays for ever

No large rooms with formations? What would the motivation be for squeezing through claustrophobic rock tunnels, without some visual eye candy somewhere throughout the expedition? Rather pointless, as there's nothing really worth seeing or looking forward to discovering! There's the mystery, of course, seeing what lies concealed within the darkness, but, just endless rocks and tight crawlspaces would discourage me very quickly.

@NUSKish6 жыл бұрын
Caving code of ethics: no more impact than absolutely necessary. Really. A cave is a time capsule and contains traces of 10.000 years or more. And, as a practical matter, you might blunt a sharp corner slightly, but that is all you have time for. Hitting one rock with another generally works well enough for that. Digging out "soft" stuff like silt, or clearing loose rocks and pebbles is OK unless it causes damage to things like stalactites etc.
@JacquelynNhi5 жыл бұрын
You could then break other rocks unintentionally and cause a collapse...best guess.
