Man I can even begin to describe how I feel about these videos; I just found your channel last week and I’ve watched at least 20-30 videos already. It’s so interesting in too many ways to explain; down to every detail. Even your dad explaining that this was a tradition for you all was truly amazing. I wish I could do these kinds of things but sadly I think it’s out of the question for me. I’m 6’6-6’7 around 230-240ish year around but I broke my neck when I was 10 and think I would have a hard time crawling and squeezing because of that. But this is so interesting to me! I would never go cave diving or any of that but the ocean is so cool; just sketchy and where I broke my neck at effects your breathing here say so I don’t think tanks are for me lol. But this? I could convince myself to do this somehow, someway. Just really feel I wouldn’t be able. Thanks for the inspiration good sir; not only teaching us but teaching your family first and foremost and the rest of the world that wants to listen! Seriously so insightful! I think what you do is great, especially taking your nephew and teaching him. I’m 40 now but my brothers and I had all kinds of fun climbing cliffs and going in holes, hunting and fishing back in the 80’s and we didn’t have adult supervision. It gives you a confidence in yourself to make good decisions and take care of yourself. Its a powerful gift you’re giving your nephew that most other kids in this day and age won’t have. Society has become too accustomed to pavements, cafe’s and internet, they forget that it’s the same harsh world as it was in the stone age and when that thin veil of modern safety disappears they’re left with no skills.
@CalvinHikes3 жыл бұрын
Thank you and agreed. I like to say that raising children to become more capable is not endangering them. What endangers children is releasing them to a cruel society without any personal confidence or ability to deal with fear. Thank you for sharing with us how you got lost, It's much appreciated that you keep it real with the viewers, we love it. Do you know of any caves to crawl through in northern california, not including the shasta caverns?
@CalvinHikes3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much I appreciate you saying that! I wasn't in any Dire Straits but I thought that I would prefer showing our mistakes then then acting like we know everything. The lava bed's national monument has a lot of public caves. There is also one near weed California called Pluto's cave which is listed publicly. There are often people in the entrance to that cave but very few people walk to the back. Even fewer people are willing to crawl beyond that or even know about it. I recommend elbow pads and knee pads and and finding that crawl at the end of Pluto's cave. Many of the excellent caves in northern California are currently difficult to get to due to the wildfires.

Caveman’s dad here. I explored some lava fields in the area you mention just this past weekend. There are many caves...mostly smaller, but the terrain is super challenging in the region I visited. Going back for more soon. Fires are gone.

Why isn't string recommended when that's what's used in cave diving?
@CalvinHikes3 жыл бұрын
Its messy, unecessary and not going to be adequate in truly mazy caves. Its ok to use, but there are other methods which dont have to be "cleaned" up. Just our opinion on that one.

You know what would be an AMAZING TOOL THAT I JUST REALIZED??? With The newer iPhones you can scan an area and it creates a 3D model of the areas scanned. You could scan and make a 3D map of an entire cave with your iPhone (and probably some spare batteries) I think I’m going to try this on my first caving trip soon
@CalvinHikes3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can but it can only do one small area at a time. But that technology is at our doorstep. I for one am very excited about 3D mapping the interior of a cave.

I love watching cavers its just awesome Id be afraid myself as you mentioned most won't do it so you show us the unique formations you find. Excelent Thank you I did want to ask why is a rope as a marker a bad idea?
@CalvinHikes Жыл бұрын
There's generally just better ways to Mark directions then what most people might assume. Using anything to Mark directions is fine but there's just easier ways. We use rocks available in the caves. We know how to place them without having to create an entire Arrow so that we know which direction is the way out. If someone is just going to go caving once they are likely to use string but it is probably not necessary. If you need to use rope or string to mark your route then you're probably not going to have enough anyways. And the truth is, most people who cave a lot just memorize the cave. Even if mistakes are made we can always find our way out. Just like driving through your neighborhood we create a mental map to navigate and that's a lot easier than stringing your way through a cave and creating a huge mess. But I have used string at times. Just not very much as I have learned better ways to navigate

One thing that will trick you on the rock stack (carins) method is if there is a fork going back you didnt realize while going forward.
@CalvinHikes Жыл бұрын
Yes, correct. I think that's basically what happened in here. A fork I didn't notice. Which does happen. You only have to retrace back to that point but if you get panicky, it's possible to forget.

Pops was wondering if his wife had a hearing problem. So one night, he stood behind her while she was sitting in her lounge chair. Pop spoke softly to her, "Honey, can you hear me?" There was no response. He moved a little closer and said again, "Honey, can you hear me?" Still, there was no response. Finally, he moved right behind her and said loudly, "Honey, can you hear me?" Mrs. Pop replied, "For the third time, Yes!"
