For Etherfields, I wish you would go into more detail about your accessibility issues. Would you be willing to start a thread on BGG about it? I have been trying to better understand these issues. Some players like myself read the 1.0 rulebook a couple of times, played the absolute best tutorial ever crafted in board games, and did not encounter accessibility issues. Some players were lost immediately after opening the box, wondering where to start. What would have helped you access and better engage with Etherfields?

I don’t agree with your tmb take. How can you knock the games rules when it is notoriously well known that the game has a wicked learning curve and then becomes very simple. It came as advertised. It is not a complex game by any means, you just have to be willing to learn the nuance and abilities/effects. There are too many unique scenarios to write a comprehensive rulebook but I think it did a pretty good job of explaining the basics. Also I would say the overhead is pretty minimal, all you do is literally move dice and chips from one place to another. The rulebook could probably explain things better but it was good enough to get it tabled and there’s always going to be mistakes so who cares if you get something wrong. Rather than bloat the rulebook they put all the gearloc and effects on reference sheets to further simplify and quicken the time it takes to look something up. Give it another shot and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. the base game may not be as comparable to unbreakable as you think, other than core mechanics. Small changes to abilities/effects, gearlocs, battle mat, etc. don’t seem like a big change but it drastically impacts the game and the choices you make. Yeah your gonna hate unbreakable if you hated base because the time/effort wasn’t put in to learn the game in the first place. My two cents.

Ghosts of Christmas is supposed to be a trick-taking game for non-trick-taking players who don't know anything about trick-taking games to begin with. That way you can teach them how to play it and they won't continuously complain about how "wrong" (in comparison to traditional trick-taking games) some of the mechanics of the game are.

Emergence Event - the expansion had no component checks so the galaxy tiles had incorrect backs and 1 ship / captain had the wrong art and player board were missing level 1 tech. Also people paying for add-ons but those add-ons going to everyone into expansion box. This is from Megacon Games (Myth) Unbroken - nothing more to say here Lesson learned always check the history of the company you are backing. Red flags were there and I ignored them.

Hey! Like your approach and honesty about your experience! I watch lots of videos on kickstarter projects but I don't back projects very often $$$... So I only backed 5 boardgames projects to this day : 7th Continent, Frosthaven, 7th Citadel, The Witcher and Hegemony. 7C is a big deception and I'm worried about 7th Citadel... I might sell it wrapped. Frosthaven should be fine even though I've still some Gloomhaven and Jaws of the Lion left to play. As time passed, I found that the Witcher gameplay not that exciting, really not sure about this one... That leaves me with Hegemony that I expect to be good. Just to say that you shouldn't be too hard on yourself about mistakes you make. Crowdfunding use "pressure" marketing tactics coupled with very strict refund policies to get money out of your pockets. Even if we know the trick, resistance remains futile... ;)

I think that the rule book issue sometimes depends on the way you process them as opposed to actually being bad. I am referring specifically here to Too Many Bones. I found the rule book just fine, covering how to play well, and never had any issues with it. I suspect it comes from my programming background from understanding rules that are only specified once. While I did find I might have changed some of the organization of the book, it worked out just fine. I read rules comments on BGG for games I have and enjoy and I find it interesting that most of the questions are answered by quotes in the rule book rather than off the cuff rulings. Such a rule book can’t be objectively bad as it does state the rules. Of course, some people process text differently and for them it it is a real slog. I reserve calling a rule book bad for those that don’t cover a large number of cases that come up and the designer, or worse the players, have to make up new rules on the fly.

Two remarks. Ghosts of Christmas is probably made by a passionate bridge player. For me, it was intuitive from the very beginning as it has an uncanny feel of playing simplified and somewhat modified version of bridge where you have an initial auction where you state your contract and play. You even use different timelines to get rid of the cards so you can manipulate future tricks. It's not only that it's a "harder trick taking game", this is a proper "bridge light" implementation. Second remark is for mini express. 18xx games for me are the staples of modern boardgaming but I can understand that it's not for everyone. However, I do feel that Mini Express is not the right way to start into that world. I would always suggest people to try Russian Railroads (or the modern incantation Ultimate Railroads). Although it's a worker placement, and there is no stock round, it was made by two guys that are active designers of 18xx games and it's a pure fun train game. There are some really good stock trading games, but most of them are older, if you want to try the newer one, Bear Raid is brilliant, fun and satirical.

Man oh man...I respect that people don't have the same interests but Etherfields is one of the best games I've ever played. I don't understand what you want the 2.0 to do for you? They produced one of the best tutorial missions (with a full-on video) I've ever seen. "I should be able to open the rulebook and play..." many games are not like that, and many of us learn much easier by playing or watching plays than reading froma rulebook. Still like the content but wish Etherfields was given more of a fair shot.

For me, the most disappointing campaigns were... Let's see: the Nova Cry expansion campaign was nothing but a scam. So that was disappointing. Most Petersen Games campaigns are insanely late, and of many nobody knows whether they will ever be fulfilled. Planet Apocalypse had broken components that were never fixed. Nemesis, fun game, but they even got in the insert a space that says "sleeved cards", yet the cards don't fit there even with the sleeves provided with the game. I think that's pretty much it. All other board game campaigns I supported went well.

It was so weird when people were hyped up for a new Fireball Island. The original game was so bad, it was basically Snakes and Ladders. The new game did really improve on the gameplay, but it ruined the one thing that was cool about the original: the artwork. The original board had art that was dark, ominous and atmospheric. The new one is all shiny and cartoonish. So even though they made the gameplay more sophisticated, the new one looks more like a children's game than the original did.

So far I haven't had anything I've backed turn out to be an absolute disappointment, but there have been games I have crowd funded that have come in and I have felt were fun but not necessary, my playgroup did not care for like I had hoped, or have run their course and been sold off. For the first category I kind of feel that way about Dwellings of Eldervale. I really want to love the game and feel like I should, but I've only played it 3 times so far and every game felt like it ended anti-climatically. I kind of have this problem frequently with games that have player driven timers, like the achievement Scythe and Dead Reckoning, where while I love those games, sometimes they just kind of end right when I feel I am starting to really get into a fun groove/got my engine really humming. I've been tempted lately to just sell or trade it to a friend so I can still get chances to play it, but as it stands I almost never feel the desire to lug that big box to my LGS. I would also include Reichbusters and Dice Themepark also kind of fall into the first category, as I really enjoy both, but they have their limitations. I played the full campaign or Reichbusters and the comboing of the deck system felt good, but the game and components system are so fiddly that I just don't get much desire to break it out very often after completing the game. Dice Themepark is also a fun game that is has a *theme* that is really up my *alley(cat)* after years of playing park sims, but the content and ultimate replayability to price point feels lacking. That said I have not messed around with the modules in the KS exclusive pack and that might add some more variability and with it replay value. The final game I would hesitantly put into the first category is Deep Madness. My playgroup and I love the theme; we love the challenge; the activation system is a neat puzzle; and the missions are varied and interesting, but it has kind of the problems of all there previous games combined to drag that down. It is a beast to travel with; it has some fiddly mechanics (we basically have chosen to house rule a different devour system since the token system is so fiddly and annoying) and the expansions get kinda wonky; lastly, there is not an enormous amount of missions given the amount of money invested, though they often require replaying to figure out the puzzle of each and are still rewarding to go back through with different random enemies and characters. As far as the second category goes, Oceans is technically the only game in it. I say technically because I passed on the campaign because I did not need the deluxified components and then got a copy KS edition for cheap because it had a dinged box, but was otherwise brand new. Unfortunately a third of my playgroup detest the game, another third are underwhelmed or lukewarm, and another third love it, but it's hard to find the mix of right people to break it out any given meetup and it's also a bummer because the game is better the more players you have to interact with and build your ecosystem around. I'm hoping Legends of the Deep will win over some of the lukewarm players as well as those that told me they want to like the game, by giving it some more tactical interest and decision making prior to the Cambrian explosion. I know it will at least help me enjoy the game more since my main criticism is sometimes it feels like it takes too long to get the Cambrian. Lastly there are games I sold off that I liked simply because people in my playgroup already had them and I saw no need to keeping my own copy. The first game was Project Elite, which I backed because I thought no one else was, only for it to turn out someone did, so I sold that one off, unfortunately after opening and organizing everything. Then there was Bloodborne the Board Game which I had the foresight to keep in the boxes it delivered in since someone who joined our group after I went all in joined the group, got their pledge first and we ended up playing through everything with their copy while mine just sat around waiting for someone locally to buy. At least the latter case I made some profit since it was all untouhed, NIB. Edit: Actually there is one KS *related* game I can kind of qualify as an unmitigated letdown... sort of. My first big box game was a used collection of the original Massive Darkness that I got off e-bay for around the price of a base pledge, but with every single addon. I went in knowing there were problems with the game and that was likely the reason it was available for so cheap, but I got it because the price point for getting to use the minis in rpgs if worst came to worst and it was terrible was fine by me. Whelp, it was terrible. We played through the corebox missions a bit and then tried to do a campaign only to give up because of how bland, easy, and fiddly it was. Despite all that I don't regret it at all, because now I have all this content for the much improved Massive Darkness 2 that my group has really been enjoying, so that's why this is really only a kind of a letdown (paired with the fact I knew the original was regarded poorly going in).

Empires Galactic Rebellion, as it really needs some serious house rules variants to fix it, and I bought 2 copies. 5. Coup: Rebllion G54, as it over complicates a simple game 6. Anything queen games big box related because 1 year later they'd have big box #2 of same game out. 7. Bomb Squad 8. Robot Turtles, as it was way too simple of a game even for kids. 9. Hey man, first time watching any of your videos and I have to say it will be my last. You have such a negative energy around yourself that permeates into your video. I watched the entire video hoping your analysis on why you felt disappointed we’re change, and it really came down to the same couple of issues. I wanted to hear a more in depth response to each game. How much did you research before back, did you watch any videos on the previous game in the genre, what made you decide to back them, etc. A lot of time, you just say the game was bad, not made well, etc. instead of defining it to tastes (excluding Mini Express). Maybe the pessimistic approach is your shtick. Or that’s how you are naturally. But it’s not my viewing tastes or enjoyable for me. I’m glad you were able to sell stuff on the secondary market, and no one judged you for doing so, but you sounded super pretentious talking about it, or making a weekly video about it. Overall, almost all these were avoidable on your end, busy casting the blame on the games or rule books. With technology now, and a younger generation getting into board games, online rules or watch it played videos are much more pertinent then you give credit to. And as you said, you learn better through reading. 65% of people learn through watching. Sure, rule books could be improved, and a lot of time is why FAQs exists. But not learning a game strictly because you have trouble getting through the rule book seems lazy. I’m glad you have a following, I’m glad you are doing well and have publishers asking for content to you. It just wasn’t for me.

I really don't understand where this dramatic dissapointment around Etherfields comes from. So much melodrama over and over. We've been playing it for a year now and do not recognize this at all. Are you talking about a different game? Did you really play it at all? I've never had issue in learning to play, and to me, the game absolutely fills it's promise. I feel you're exagerating minor negative points, and completely ignoring the great deep gameplay this game brings. I love the mechanics, the artwork, the sense of discovery, the originality that every dream brings... Over different sessions, it keeps evolving. That means the rules keep changing, you discover secrets, and the game gets more depth the further you go. During play you earn items, notecards, citizens, etc... that alter the game going forward. Things you discover in one dream, suddenly give an extra layer of depth to all other dreams. The attention for detail is amazing and we find ourselves looking at all the beautiful art through new glasses, trying to catch details we earlier did not see. I've always played v1. Not that v2 is any different, it's not changing the game itself. It only takes slumbers of the worldmap and instead let's you do 2 slumbers before every dream. don't expect a great finetuned creative deep game to be changed. The slumbers are the only part of the game that some players wanted to reduce and AR listened and issued new maptiles to accommodate those players. Myself I haven't even switched to v2. I for one love complex, rich games, and none of those games are easy to learn from the rulebook alone. Etherfields is just no exception to that. Take any heavy game and try translating the rulebook into gameplay. It's never smooth. You read the rules, watch a how to play (all heavy games recommend it in their manual), do a testplay... It takes some preparation. Nothing to be wining about right?

Disagree with Myth Journeyman as between Myth and it's release they produced Rules 2.0 through fan involvement , the 2.0 delivered at cost for dollars rulebook and cards cleared up ambiguities using keywords and confusion over iconography, though they could have kept both. They were a great creative team but lacked business knowledge exactly the sort of company that crowdfunding should nurture, instead many expected professional retail production values. For their part they never realised their own weaknesses until far too late. Read 2.0 rules and tell me what you didn't understand? Feel you are just rehashing a very few, very negative group but not the vast majority of players or your own experience, if you started with Journeyman you must have had at least the core plus 2.0 rules and cards if not why not as it was the base required. There are still active Myth groups and players. It was a new company, innovative system and ambitious. Many Myth innovations found there way into other games from the abilities from card play to the enemy AI mechanisms and the Darkness system style can be seen in other games especially those 1 vs Many mechanics. Some did not like the system but that does not mean the system is broken. The levelling up is minor compared to some but again that does not make it a bad game. I do agree on project execution though engagement was great on their own forums. Over time some of the original content that fell out of favour, mainly to appease feedback e.g. the quest cards as opposed to fixed stories which were and are great, they didn't drop it entirely. The original intent was for you to be able to steer an almost on the fly RPG boardgame experience without needing a DM and IMO that works. The system is easy to use with other gamed Lasting Tales(pdf delivered) LoD even DnD just use the quests, stories etc as a guide and/or convert the characters and items. Yes I am disappointed the Journeyman SG plus minis are still outstanding but the gameplay is there. Myth is not complex just different and is worth another look. I am happy to invest time into a game if I see a good system. Something I feel most content creators are not, there time is money so extra time invested to learn is wasted, there are a few exceptions sadly not many. I would agree with your rants if this was retail but it is investing in ideas to be realised. My most disappointing fulfilled KS was Gloomhaven, only ever played first few scenarios and the enemy AI luck was crippling, replayed them and you just can't win and I never had this issue with Mistfall, Marvel Champions, Tainted Grail and a host o other card based systems. I bought to group play but lockdown meant that didn't happen. I feel the value may be in the social gaming , have it up for trade/sale nothing secret opened but no takers. Doubly pissed off when Jaws of the Lion came out which seemed to answer my issues with the game but cannot justify buying it until I have moved Gloomhaven (inc forgotten circles) on.

IMHO the title of this video should have been ‘poorly written rule books ruins my game experience’… I came on thinking you hated these games but instead it’s more ranting about how good a game is or what specifically about the game play or game mechanics that prevents(ed) from enjoying said game? Broken mechanics or gameplay cannot be fixed but bad rule book can be, so again IMHO you shouldn’t be disappointed in the game itself but rather disappointed with the publisher instead… to be fair I am basing this comment at the 8 minute mark and I’m not planning on watching the rest of this video…

I sold my copy on receiving it. I looked at my shelves... piles of civilization building games... half of them are still in wrap, then I looked at this colossus box, and thought to myself, what am I doing...lol...gone...I feel better.

Boo on etherfields. Your complaint on an amazing game is the rule book. We have KZbin now I almost never read rules books I learn to play from KZbin. Who cares about the rule book. The game is what is important. Too many bones. - Do not compare unbreakable to the base too many bones. Most of the characters in too many bones are kind of boring. The characters that came out after that are incredible and so much fun. Too many bones abilities are kind of straight forward and easy to use. The AI is easy to play through unlike gloomhaven.

speak for yourself, I find it way easier to learn from a well written rule book, than I do from a well made KZbin video rules explanation.

He is trying to say, “you should not need a tutorial to understand the tutorial.” I like videos too, but his point is well made.

Less drama if you just titled this video as poorly written rulebooks has me disappointed…. IMHO😅
