At my local Dollar Store, I’ve seen a (5) pack of 39 gallon leaf bags for $1, which would provide a large amount of plastic yardage for roof, body, and ground cover. A plastic bag can also serve triple duty as a water proof container and fire starter. That plastic table cloth you have could also be unpacked and tied into a water proof carry bag.

I did a similar challenge on my own, but I went to the Just-A-Buck store. Hints: Try a paint drop cloth (9'X 12") for a pretty decent-sized shelter. Rub the matches against the candle wax to make them at least water-resistant (too much wax loads the striker strip). A box of gallon-size ziplock bags for a waterproof package. The 2-knife selection was good, considering what they usually have available in those stores.

Someone told me to get a roll of a firm, thick trashbag for my emergency kit as it can be used to form a makeshift tent, can hold items, should work as a sleeping bag, filled with leaves could make for a pillow, you make can a rope out of it, you could store water in it, wrap around Your body for extra isolation.

Those lids will pop off like nothing. They are the worst containers on the planet. And they aren't waterproof either. I would have got a box of large ziplock baggies and used all of them, one inside the other and it would definitely be waterproof and you could use the baggies for other things. Lighting fires, carrying water, storing food or berries, and boiling water.

My dad and I were elk hunting in Oregon this past spring and we hiked 10 miles in and realized that we forgot all of our means of making a fire in his truck. We had some paracord with us and he knew how to make a bow drill set. After about 3 hours we both gave up on the bow drilling. He claims that it was because as we got higher in elevation, cedar, which is decent material for a bow drill set was no longer present in the woods we were in. It was mainly sapling spruce. It was getting darker and was about 33 degrees fahrenheit according to my miniature thermometer gauge and it was only about 7 p.m. Then we started getting worried about warmth. We had decided to test our wits and not take sleeping bags or very much gear. (we decided to take matches though because we didn't want to be miserable, but we were all in for trying to make a bow drill instead, and well the matches were 10 miles back the way we came across somewhat dangerous terrain to be in at night.) Dad had a .45 caliber semi-auto pistol for protection and we jury-rigged a bird's nest to catch sparks from the end of the barrel when the firing pin was activated and gunpowder combusts( the solid bullet was obviously removed!) As you may have guessed, it failed miserably lol even after trying 5 or so rounds. That really brought us down as we thought that it was our last hope for fire that night. I was passing the time by looking at some of the pictures that I took of some waterfalls earlier in the day and then I realized that I had a detachable flash! I quickly told my dad about what I had read before that someone had busted a bulb on a flashlight and produced a spark with the filament inside. He thought it was farfetched but I persuaded him to help me out. I took apart the flash and we observed the components, there were capacitors, 3 wires, a bulb, a charger switch, and a discharge button and a battery of course. We carefully cracked the bulb and tried the switch, nothing. However, we quickly realized that we did not need the bulb, but a live end of one of the wires. We cut into one and struck a fluffed up q-tip with a discharge from the battery of the flash and voila, a fire! My dad freaked out with joy and I swear that these words came from his mouth: "Oh holy duck fuck!" lol I laughed so hard! A quickly placed it in our dry bird's nest of spanish moss and other things and shortly after we had a good fire that lasted and kept us warm all us all night. Worst part was I didn't get it on tape with my damn camera!!!

Great idea! I will say that I don't think that the orange table cloth will withstand a heavy downpour. I've had many a birthday party with those cloths, and they tear pretty easily. That particular store may not have had them in stock, but DG has a package of 7 large black trash bags for $1.00. You could even get the ones with the pull strings and use those for something. It probably would have covered more area when opened up and put together. Duck tape is a must. We'll have to try this for ourselves and see what we can do :) Can't wait to watch the Mrs.!

It's good idea to move the matches from one box into the box of another for a 64 count. Saves space. Easier access.

I read "To Build a Fire" (Jack London) as a kid and decided to never let matches determine my survival. I would add a lighter, maybe a magnifying glass to light a fire. Matches are great as a last resort, I'd still pack a box of them.

I just received my signed copy of Modern Homesteading in the mail. Woo Hoo! I was a little concerned because when i opened the priority mail package, the book was sealed in a clear plastic shrink wrap. First thing i thought was, oh no...I must have got one of the regular books, and not signed. My reasoning was that they just signed them on Sunday, how could they have driven back to the book factory, shrink wrapped them and packaged them and mail them all out for me to get mine in the mail today. But as usual, iwas wrong, Not only did i get a signed copy, i got the rare Black on Black signature. Only Mrs. W knows exactly how rare it is, and She's not telling.

Sacrifice part of one candle to use the wax to waterproof the matches and put the striker patch inside the flash light if of course it's water proof . Plenty of solutions to a small problem.

+Wranglerstar ok, question..... If I was to do this challenge, how would it go because I live in Scotland, I can probably do it with £7.50 which is about $10, but obviously we don't have a dollar store here, (though we do have pound shops) so can it be any store providing it's a regular retailer bearing in mind that pretty much everything is more expensive here. Or alternately, Use £10 in a pound shop which I think may be more true to the spirit of the challenge? Let me know what you think folks.
