My favorite dragon has to be Cannibal because of the mystery surrounding him. There is a theory Cannibal isn't apart of the Targaryen linage of dragons, but came from another family (possibly House Baelerys). Which would explain why no Targaryen have been able to claim him.

@@DragonDzNot spoiler: Remember how in got season 1 ned vs Jamie was gonna happend and we had no clue who's gonna win? Ned being old but formidable and Jamie literally compared to arthur dayne? But then a spearman jabs his spear in neds leg? Now the spearman here is sunfyre Jamie being vhagar thought to be the strongest Ned being meleyes cause it's considered she could have taken and defeated vhagar in a solo fight. No one knows if it's 100% but same can be said for Ned vs Jamie. We will never know because sunfyre came ....... Spoiler: Sunfyre totally deserved to die brutally like he did. Much later.

If we see Balerion I really hope they go all of the way. This dragon was said to have been large enough to swallow a mammoth whole and that was during the conquest when he was younger and thus smaller than at the end. This dragon should be absolutely MASSIVE and anything less than what's described will be a huge disappointment, imo.

I really hope this series taking on a story with so many dragons will go into proper detail differentiating their unique looks & characteristics and possibly even down to temperament and behavior. That is something I really hope to see , going into that intricate detail with the dragons. So many dragons I want to see , I also want and think we will get some sort of glimpse of Balerion even if in a brief flashback , and of course by the DotD Vhagar is the biggest and oldest dragon who was even involved in the Conquest which should make for an epic dragon on-screen. I certainly want to see Caraxes , Meleys, Vermithor and Silverwing and others. From somewhat of an aesthetic perspective I really look forward to seeing Sunfyre on screen if HotD does that textual description justice ; just seems it could be a really interesting visual if they capture Sunfyre's look (based on the text) properly.

yeah I mean if they give the CGI artists those descriptions, I don't see why they wouldn't use them. As you say, you need them to be different. It's a major draw of the show. And yeah I have heard they will look more differentiated (Dany's 3 were all the same cgi dragon)

@@DavidLightbringer lets hope , my fear as you mentioned would be a GoT repeat where aside from the sizes and slight color variations the dragons are essentially identical. Though I do hold out hope those involved in HotD , Condal in particular are such fans and students of this universe that they will make sure to go into such detail and differentiation with the dragons and other aspects of this narrative as well. GoT seemed to run on a fairly tight budget , by the end it was a miracle if we got more than a glimpse of a direwolf for example. But HotD will need quite a bit more and I am sure Condal and Sapochnik would not have agreed to take this on if they had to half-a** it. Plus HBO was taken over twice since GoT ended , so clean slate all around for me. I just hope and do think they will go into such level of detail.

Just a small correction: Rhaenyra and Daemon flying their dragons around the Narrow sea like their 'uncle and aunt' is actually like their mother/grandmother for Alyssa, and uncle/grand-uncle/grandfather-in-law for Aemon.

GRRM has been keeping details of the last dragons pretty close to his chest. TWOIAF mentions it in passing, but I imagine Blood & Fire would have to actually go into the details, which is one of the reasons I wasn't expecting it until after ADOS. Hopefully we can learn why House Targaryen lost the ability to hatch dragons.

I'm pretty sure Vermathor is the second biggest/oldest dragon behind Vhagar at the time of House of the Dragon, not Caraxes. He just doesn't get a rider until later in the story. I hope the show stays true to the story with regard to all the dragons' colors and sizes. It's going to be epic!!!!!

I think it has to do with "magic" blood as opposed to pure valyrian blood. House Strong is a first men house so there is that blood mixed with the Targaryen. Also, one of Jaeherys' daughters married into House Arryn so Rhaenyra's mother had dragon/"magic" blood. And obvs Velaryon is of valyrian descent.

These dragons have to be huge imo. The dragons in GoT were no more than 10 by the end of the series, most of the dragons in House of Dragons are 30-60, so they should all be atleast twice as big as Drogon.

Strictly speaking based on heraldic convention, red on black would not be considered high contrast, historically you would see only white (argent, or silver) or yellow (or, gold in French) on a black background.

Thank you for this video! You are my go-to-guy when it comes to getting reacquainted with “A Song of Ice and Fire”, etc. I used to be obsessed and eventually I had to branch out and read other fantasy whilst patiently waiting for WoW…….and “The Doors of Stone”. The first author I got hooked on was Joe Abercrombie and his nine “First Law” books. I don’t know if you are familiar with him but he is awesome. He is not as in depth as George, however in my opinion his character work is second to none and he has a great sense of humor. The best books I read all year have been John Gwynne’s “ The Shadow of the Gods” and coming in at number one is Richard Swan’s “The Justice of Kings”. I believe it is Swan’s fantasy debut. I highly recommend both. Anyways, I will donate to your cause later this week, I appreciate your hard work and in depth analysis! I threw you a bit of $$$ a few weeks ago under the name Ryan, I would love to give more, however I work 70 mins away from home and my gas bill is on the verge of costing as much as my apartment haha! Keep up the good work!

One of the biggest themes that resonated with me from the show and books was "You are not your father or your bloodline." The best stories came from that theme but then mess it up with "but all Stark's and targaryens are special because of their blood and birth right hyrr durr."

It always sits wrong with me that Balerion just died "of old age", the timing is just fishy. He was absolutely poisoned by the maesters. He was resilient as fuck, remember that he survived whatever wound he had after the year he spent doing only-martin-knows-what with Aerea and came back in 56AC, BUT the real danger happened to him when he became the first dragon to live on the dragon pit. At Dragonstone, the dragons had all the freedom they needed to grow and thrive, but it's reported that they stopped growing at the dragon pit. Maester attribute this to "being in a close space", but I think they might have spent more than 30 years developing the poison that made Balerion sick in his last years and would eventually kill all the dragons that came after. The dates make sense too: From the moment Balerion started living on the pit, he became tired and sickly. Baby boy Baelon smacked him on the snout and didn't get eaten? That doesn't sound worthy of the "Black Dread" at all. Furthermore, his custodios (dragonkeepers, though we never know who those persons are, no names, no allegiances?) kept Alyssa from claiming him, saying he was "sluggish and old". They sound to me like they didn't want the big dragon to leave the pit just yet. Then Viserys claims him almkst by the end, when he's so sick he can't fly to Dragonstone, but only under the authority of him being the king. I'm assuming if someone else tried bebode him, like Alissa, they would have been dissuaded as well. Balerion spent 38 years at that pit getting poisoned by the masters and the dragonkeepers. Curious how the maesters writting this story never talk about those dragonkeepers... that silence speaks volumes, they were in cahoots during that time. Maesters did the brain work (clean hands as littlefinger said), an the keepers feed him what was instructed to them and kept him from leaving the pit . At the beginning of that period, the dragon had half healed scars and jagged rent, the masters could have used this just as an excuse to get closer and learn from it or mend his wounds, but that seems like their modus operandi to kill stealthily. I just think the masters had to develop a way to ensure no dragon hatchling would survive after the dance and what better way to develop a poison that try it on the mightiest of the dragons? And from a narrative perspective, it seems more than just right that Balerion would mirror the role that his last rider had during those years: they both were used and manipulated, there are even rumors of Viserys being poisoned by the end of his life too... They were kept alive for as long as need be in order to develop all the tools they needed to have a civil war AND kill all the dragons.

Balerion died not because he was getting old, he died because his joints and organs couldn't support his size anymore, that is a dragons natural death. They get too big and just die, but most dragons never lived to make it to the age and size of Balerion. Think about humans that have Gigantism, they die because their joints and organs can't support their size anymore, not because they are old.

Lol it's not that serious...also, dany locked up viserion and rhaegal and they didn't grow to be as large & strong as drogon, plus all that fire power must take its toll eventually. I don't imagine any living thing being able to just keep that up forever, there's bound to be eventual wear and tear

The Cannibal reminds me of Maegor, I'm guessing that's because they both represent the same thing. Maegor wields the might, power and appearance of Aegon but has Visenya's witchy will working inside him, just as the Cannibal has Balerion's black coloration with the green eyes of Vhagar. Also, Maegor was a kinslayer and a dragon, just as the Cannibal is obviously a dragon who eats other dragons.

I'm so sad we're not getting this show to start at Aegon's Conquest. So much content missed out on. And one of the most dramatic battles imo was Maegor vs Aegon the Uncrowned. Maegor's rule was already so terrifying and riddled with conflict, and Aegon was the glimmer of hope many in Westeros had against the tyrant who ruled them. He rallied a great army and marched to claim his crown, but Maegor descended upon him out of nowhere on Balerion and viciously killed his dragon and sent him plummeting to his death. It broke the spirit of his army almost immediately and they were left at the mercy (or lack thereof) of Maegor. I was speechless when I first read it.
