The way DiBiase portrayed it was too unique to be copied, especially nowadays as it doesn't fit modern day wrestling at all. Or honestly just modern times all around. I thought Del Rio pulled his own version off really well back during his first run, and even DiBiase jr. with Maryse had the potential to be great turning his father's legacy into his own interpretation had they not given up on him after, what was it, 4 weeks?

I don't think Damien Sandow failed at the gimmick, WWE failed him time and time again and Cena absolutely buried him. The man got himself over with every gimmick, even as Damien Mizdow he somehow got himself over. He was a solid worker and good on the mic. He's just another example of WWE not utilizing talent.
@brandonyouth52412 жыл бұрын
Lol exactly. They said winning or losing doesn't matter but fail to realize that if a superstar is constantly losing or even keep losing the big ones people will easily losing their interests in that said superstar. Granted, Sandow was pretty good at reinventing himself but still got the axe in the end because he's not supposed to get over. He's not really in their holy plan of becoming a major player, which is sad actually. Same can be said to alot of the superstars in this list alone like Ryback. He was so over with his streak but once he kept losing big matches people just didn't care anymore no matter where they put him in the card.
@thelonewolf70x72 жыл бұрын
Even as a Cena fan since I was a kid, I totally agree with you nowadays. Like, Cena was injured at the time, tired after a match enough for Damien Sandow successfully win the WHC title from Cena; but they had to book Cena to go Super Cena once again... Like, they could've make Sandow have a WHC title reign for a couple of weeks or even a month or two, then Cena challenges him for it after a couple of months, and win it back. At least Sandow would have a taste of the WHC for a time.

This is going back a bit but Mohommad Hassan replicating the Iron Sheik. He did it way better than the Sheik and generated so much heat, then the WWE git stupid with his gimmick and pushed it to far then booted the guy off TV for doing his role so well. I don't remember an audience hating a wrestler as much as Hassan.

Agreed. I'd like to put Triple H in the same category but since he won the tourney he still got tons of hiccups in his career up until he finally made it at the end of 1999.

For me, it'll always be the original 'king of the ring - Owen Hart' . They should keep the competition going in his honour and memory. King Booker comes second.

"When you think about King of the Ring, you think about booker first." Absolutely Not! The Greats such as Bret Hart (2x), Triple H, Stone Cold, Edge, just to name a few, have won the king of the ring & never made a big gimmick deal about it. That in my mind, solidified the prestige of winning KOTR, they never let it get to their heads, which increased how much I appreciate them. I dig Booker T but he jacked Jerry King Lawler's gimmick & so did Corbin. It's like they let the victory get to their ego, oh king this & king that, that ishh gets old. The Original WWF/E Hall of famers had their KOTR achievements count toward the hall of fame & not toward a new but occupied gimmick. You don't fool me Booker T, you don't fool me man. When I think about King Of The Ring, I always think about Stone Cold first.

True. I don't mind with them doing this "King" gimmick every once in a while after winning the tournament but problem is that they keep doing it with every KoTR winners since Booker and it just screams lazy writings. William Regal, Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Corbin and now Xavier. 20 writers backstage and this washed up, repetitive storyline is all they're ended up with lol

Why is it that every luchador in America essentially has the gimmick of wanting to be the next Rey Mysterio? Like I understand he's one of THE most iconic American luchadors, but when Rey was coming up in ECW or WCW or early WWE his gimmick wasn't just happy luchador wanting to be the next Mil Mascaras.
