30 years as a professional paint & decorating store manager and prior to that YEARS as a licensed painting & remodeling contractor in 4 states I would say to the viewers be VERY careful about the tip with the sample paint on the front door. Pay attention to where you live, how much of a mildew problem you have in the area, and how much sun impacts the front door. MOST general, run-of-the-mill company paint samples are INTERIOR PAINT! This means that it will NOT have the mildewcide in it which is CRUCIAL in some areas of the country, and it does NOT have the UV inhibitors that an exterior paint will have, so if the door is exposed to direct sunlight that paint will break down fairly quickly. Also, interior paints will generally be what is called a "hard-cure" while exterior paints are generally a "soft-cure", this is intentional so that exterior paint can withstand the constant and sometimes EXTREME shifts in thermal expansion caused by various exterior temperatures. Simply put, if you live in a locale with extreme temperature changes, that INTERIOR PAINT SAMPLE may tend to CRACK on that exterior surface - JUST because it may have worked for this lady and her channel does NOT mean it will be satisfactory for YOU and YOUR situation. And let's not even talk about the QUALITY of paint samples... MOST paint samples are made with very poor quality paint - it's exceedingly cheap, low-quality paint that is just designed to show you the color, because, nothing looks like paint on a wall but paint on a wall... and when you're done viewing the color, you paint over it with high-quality paint. Buyer beware on this tip! Seriously, a quart of exterior door paint is NOT expensive and will last for YEARS! DON'T cheap out on this! Your front door is usually one of the first impressions that guests have when they come to visit!

I was sus when she said she just painted over a rusty railing. This sounds like flipper renovations, where the next person to move in realizes everything was done wrong/poorly, and they have to spend more money to fix it, and it's more difficult to undo the damage than it would've been if the flipper would've just left it alone or gotten someone who knew what they were doing.

@@horohorosrin precisely! I abhor these hack channels that give out this poor quality information. People eat it up because they just don't know any better, then they end up paying for it in the end.

Totally updated our 1976 Rancher. Slowly ( 1 room at a time) converting old light switches & outlets to euro rocker switches/ outlets is another way to update your home. I 100% agree that Window treatments & rods are Ridiculously priced!! Make your own...in a lot of homes it's difficult if not impossible to find curtain rods that match in a variety of window sizes!!

Davee Kilian awesome! They are not hard to maintain, just clean with soap and water and don’t let any water soak on them for too long. I really loved the idea of adding trim to the slab doors. I grew up in a house full of them in the natural tone and just painting them would have improved them, but adding the trim would have been a real step up. I wish I had seen this when we were fixing my parent's house before we had to sell it. The other idea I love is adding the board and batten with the nice plate rail on top. May I ask- is it just the wall in between the strips of wood or did you go the full wainscotting boards with strips of wood? In the 1990s my brother and his family and I once lived on an old farm. I was in what was originally the chicken house and converted sometime in the 1940s or 50s to an apartment. There was a lot of light in the apartment so it was really cheerful. It had hardwood floors and the old thick, wide, knotty pine boards were installed vertically (with a bead in between each board), throughout the apartment. My living room was huge, 14' x 25' (for an apartment). I loved how it all aged perfectly together. I used to host Italian Night once a month for my friends. Some music from Italy, with tacky red, white, and green decorations outside. I was always dressed up with a pillow under one of my grandmother's dresses, a white apron with authentic sauce stains on the front, and a babushka on my head. The most authentic idea was a picture of Frank Sinatra with a novena candle lit in front of it. I saw this idea in a couple of family-run restaurants at the cash registers when I backpacked through Italy 5 years earlier. Sorry, I get carried away. Anywho, my brother and his family rented the old main house which had huge rooms and a high ceiling in the living room. There was a fieldstone fireplace with built-in glass-front cabinets on either side of it. Now, to the best of it all. The walls were covered halfway up to the 10 ft ceiling with hand-carved, dark, rich walnut panels that each had different wildlife scenes carved into them like bears, moose, raccoons, bunnies, and even loons in a couple of panels depicting a lake scene. This was original, well everything was original to the lodge which was built in 1809 for the then Governor of CT,(but the mechanics had been "updated" sometime in the 1940s to push button light switches and the like). The story is the governor was from old money and commissioned the panels from some well-known craftsman who lived in Montreal and then had them shipped to the home. By the way, this lodge was built across from the oldest stone house on the eastern seaboard. The stone house was built in 1647 and has a slit window at the very top so the wife of the sea captain who owned it, could watch him come into port after long trips carrying goods back and forth to Europe. Unfortunately, long after my brother lived there, the owner's daughter and her son were living there when the large beautiful porch with its bare cedar posts caught on fire from a lit cigarette, and the entire house was engulfed in a matter of minutes and burned to the ground. Luckily the two occupants got out alive, but both had serious injuries. The mom had severe burns on her hands from hanging outside of the third-floor window and was rescued by a fireman. The son was worse. He jumped out his bedroom window and hit an oil tank fill pipe which caused injuries to all of his internal organs, along with seared windpipe and lungs. Years later they both are doing well. The house was all timber, including a new cedar shingle roof, and that's why it went up so quickly. I'll never forget the house and those panels, and the beautiful handmade and carved woodwork that was everywhere in that house. Just the foundation and half of the stone fireplace stand today.

When we moved into our home in 2003, I wanted to put curtain rods in our living room but I hate how curtain rings always get caught in the middle part where one half of the rod goes into the other. I decided to do conduit so it would be a solid entire piece --- no rings getting stuck when I pull the drapes closed! But I went a step further. Spray painting them means chipping paint. Instead, I took my conduit after I cut them to size for each window to a local metal working place where they powder coat metal. I chose the color (black) but I eye-balled the red powder coating for my barbecue. Using their fancy powder coating method which I think involves positive and negative something or other, they coated the conduit and it came out perfectly and this finish is so durable that there are no worries about it ever coming off. This is the way to go. And it wasn't expensive! Because conduit is so cheap, this whole process was cheaper than buying the official curtain rods!

I’ve enjoyed watching the transformation of your home over the past 1+ year. You’ve done such a great job working with what you have and on a budget while not sacrificing your design style. I’ve also done the conduit for my boys room and have it ready to go up in my daughter’s room. The boys window is right up against the wall so this option really worked to let us get as close as possible to the corner of the room. Looking forward to your next project! 😊 (and I love your breezeway too, that tile job. 👌🏻). The board and baton is one of my favs. So many favorites! LoL

Thank you. You gave me the idea to spray paint my heat registers rather than replace the, cheaper.
