The message I give myself is: I have enough. Shoes, clothes, handbags, furniture & knicknacks - I have enough. I am retired, I own my own unit and car, I can feed myself and my gorgeous cat, I have wonderful family and friends, I thoroughly enjoy my low-cost interests and hobbies. I have enough, and I am happy.

@@carolynmaves503same here. I ave audible with Amazon and have like 300ish stories on there so enough to keep me going. Some series I listen to every time they bring out a new book. And they are great. Others are a one off. But always i listen to the sample to check I can cope with the person telling the story as I do find some voices I can’t understand ISO I always check. I have recently found a free sight that brings out chapters of the book each day. So you listen to 30mins a day and then you can pay to listen to more or wait 24 hrs and get the next instalment. I listened to one story and then forgot for 5 days that I had the app so had 5 days to listen too that was nice.

I am doing a no spend crafting winter here in Michigan. Anything I create will be done with what I already have, using up yarn, materials, paint, embroidery floss , paper etc. My one exception would be adhesive of any kind that is needed. Not sure how I missed this video from 3 weeks ago. With no exaggeration this video hits every single angle on the head. I would like to give a tip for fridge lists that has made things easier for me. On the side of my fridge I have a magnetic pad (dollar tree) I take inventory of upstairs and the fridge down stairs and when I use something I cross it off and when I add to them jot it down. With a glance I can come up with ideas. Next to that list is another pad of what I'm getting low on or need to replace. Thank You for taking the time to make another fantastic useful video.

I always pay my bills up from January to March and have winter meals stocked up. And keep my has tank filled so it will be a no spend pantry meals for 3 months. And make own snacks too. I've found all my recipes too make egg roll wraps, soft taco shells, and my mother yeast biscuit recipe from 3 generations. All can be made for pennies verses $3.99-$5.00 each. And they all can be used with leftovers stretching your food even more. Best recipe is the homemade pop tarts using my homemade jams. And once a month freezer meals.

I already set up pages with my No Spend January goals, tracker, etc. including a list of things I can do for free (what you called "Boredom busters". I began setting up for what I am calling "Finish It February" in which I want to use those cold, snow bound days to finish up some half done craft projects, and Mend-It March to do some repairs around the house. I love our library! Our little town library picks a book each year for the community to read together and gives anyone a free copy of that book so they can participate in all the book discussions and activities throughout the year. We just moved here and I went in to get a library card when I noticed the stack of books and the sign. When I asked about what it was, the librarian explained it to me, gave me a copy of the scheduled activities for the 2024 book along with a copy of the book to keep. She also gave me copies of the past 3 years books to keep- FOR FREE. After we’re done, we can keep the book or give it to someone else. So I have 4 books to keep me company over the winter. 3 of them were books on my wish list! I was so happy! Saved me money, plus I can participate in the community activities for the 2024 book starting in January when I am doing a no spend! DEFINITELY check out your local library.

Yes, 2/10 of one mile, and I've never even walked in it for the seven years we've lived here. . . how embarrassing. I do love reading, but always buy my books. Taking advantage of my local library will save me a good bit of money currently going to Amazon. I am going to try and tailor my meal plans to what is currently in our freezer and pantry. Instead of the typical spending, I'm hoping to save the extra money for my husband's upcoming retirement. Thanks for all of your inspiration, and I hope you and Paul have a blessed Christmas.

I completely agree about a library card. Since I prefer to read on paper, I went to the library Friday and got a bunch of books to make it through New Years. My library's portal even allows me to read magazines online. A 'no-spend January" is not on my schedule. I live in NJ and Shop-Rite does it's HUGE Can-Can sale mid-January. I always save up to buy most of the canned goods I'll need for the year then. Beans, tomatoes, some veggies, and it's always the lowest price all year for Progresso soup. I used to buy 30 cases of dog food, saving about 50% over the rest of the year's prices (My husband thought I was nuts, but just played along; lugging cases in through the basement window for me! Unfortunately, I've been a widow almost 19 years now, and I haven't had a dog for a few years either.) This frugality, which I believe is a gift from God, has helped me to manage widowhood financially. Hope you and Paul have a blessed Christmas

Start planning the holidays by labor day,at the latest. We know November and December come every year. We know what holidays are in those months. Plan early, and think outside the box with meals. Instead of the big antipasto platter plus the huge meal, pick one or the other. Do dessert. Brunch Sandwiches Pot luck. Gifts. How many people are you giving to? What is the budget? Start saving up. Or,shop year round for gifts.stash them away

Auntie Emmy and Uncle Paul, I'm looking forward to a low spend/no spend January for a few reasons - because I'm officially done with graduate school (hooray), I get close to 40 hours of my week back - which means I have time to plan meals and take stock of my household. This past year was challenging, so my motivation for not spending January is to focus on myself and take stock. I've been go go go for so long that I need a chance to reset and reprioritize what is important. Using the excuse of low/no spend means I can enjoy books I already have and use yarn I have stockpiled to make baby blankets as gifts for coworkers having babies. I'm looking forward to it!

The library is not practical for us but the internet sure is. We don’t watch much TV but there are plenty of useful things to find on the net. We live several miles out in the country so I plan shopping and trips to town to get the most out of the trip. As for food that can be ready to eat quickly, I make 20-40 burritos in a batch and pack them in double bags then put them in the freezer to take out when needed for work lunches or just when needed. I can make really healthy food this way with no hidden health risks.

We will be eating more healthy meals predominantly with food we already have in our home. I will be joining you on the no-spend journey. It will be my third no-spend January with you. My “Why” is to pay down on my debt. I have kept a list of to-do’s during the month…some fun, some not so fun…but I hope to check everything off by the end of the month. One tip I learned over the years is if I see something I want to purchase in a no-spend month, I just make a list with the items, where I would purchase it from along with the price. At the end of the month (or at least 30 days), if I still want it, I have to save up the money to purchase it. I can’t use any of the money saved in January as that is all going toward my debt. I then try to follow the 30-day rule, plus I have to have the cash to buy it. It has worked well for me over the past couple of years. I will be writing out my meal plan for the month of January very soon and will start with clearing out my freezer (it’s packed!) along with my pantry. I’ve done an excel spreadsheet and listed everything by its expiration date so the older items will be used up first. I probably have enough food to go into February because it is just me in my food household. I usually make one large pot/pan/slow-cooker meal to last most of the week and then make small meals from other ingredients I have on hand. Wishing both of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Love your videos!

I often only peruse books so it's actually a bit of a hassle to lug around books to and fro when maybe I only read a few pages 😅another thing I am wanting to do is prepare some more special recipes. Who says it needs to be Christmas for that? I often feel I'm missing out on a lot of Christmas food because I can't eat a whole meal of heavier or richer foods. But I do like the dishes. I was notified by my employer that my hours will be cut for the month of January. So, I will have at least 1 month of low to no spend. Am already making plans to make that extra time count. I have home projects that I can do, crafts, books, and will be able to focus on doing more home cooking/meal prep.

January is a great month to do this, although sheets are often a wonderful buy in Jan. Thankfully, I don’t need any! But I DO need to pay my gas company 😂

We are joining you in no spend January! My pantry and freezer is full and I need to use this food before I buy anymore. I will still buy fresh vegetables, produce and dairy products. I usually stock up on items when I can get them at a good price, but now I just need to use them. Take care Emmy and Paul and thanks for the encouragement.

Very thankful that i saw this video today. Three days before the 1st of 2024! I'm on-board and raring to go. One of the comments i read listed things to do in upcoming months and i will be adding a new monthly goal to my "command center". May God richly bless you and your family in the coming year. ❤🎉😊

How perfect and I just subscribed, I had just talked to my Mr. He had no clue what I was talking about. We can do this. I already have plenty of the things to fill the gap. We have truly been blessed. We have 1/4 of a cow and 1/2 a pig in the freezers, I have lots of caned goods and baking things. I know I can do this.. I appreciate your help and enthusiasm. Thank you for all you do.

I'm excited to slow down and enjoy taking my time doing things the old-fashioned way. There are many old recipes I'm planning on making. Like starting my sour dough starter again and making homemade kombucha.😊

Great video we just moved into a smaller house. So we are still sorting every box so this Christmas we goot each other something we needed. So we are already on a low spend no spend. We honestly have very little room. That's one way to keep from spending and more stuff to a little house.

I just paid off my Amazon and bank credit cards (I do this twice/month). Other than gas, and perishable foods, my expenses are charities, pet items (insurance, food, litter), and utilities on my cards. I get cash or points back on each card.

I like to keep freezer meals for times I don't feel like cooking or I'm finding time is running short. It's healthier than hittin Rotten Ronnie's for a Big Mac

For those who have libraries that charge a or a high membership fee and it is not viable, why not see if your area has a little free library- also a great way to swap a book already read- if there is none there why not start one? Eventbrite also has some great free online and meet up events, great talks from some renowned museums, authors and artists or you can donate a little if you can afford it. Just as an alternative to the traditional library offers.

Another idea could be to make 2 fave or new recipes. Perhaps you always wanted to make stir fry. Access pantry, buy as minimal as you need and enjoy making the recipes on 2 Fridays or on 2 days it rains, or on 2 Saturdays when you’re curling up with a book.

After all the festivities in December it's going to be nice to get back to portion control for my husband and I, and using my creativity. I come from a long line of great cooks that always thought you had to make enough to feed an army. I'm trying to break that habit. I look at my supplies now and think Emmy reminds us not to waste food, ha.

Library card, absolutely. While raising two kids, we always went to the library. I use my library now to read ebooks. An ebook is checked out on my card the same way and I don't have to drive to my library branch! Not all books are available in digital form but I have read many, including magazines.

I had two things I wanted this year a DVD player and a CD/cassette player. I found a DVD player in the sales but I'm not going to buy anything else now this month. I'm a shopping addict who is doing a low buy year to change my spending habits.
