Here's my take on Exploration: 1. The Anaconda has the best jump range, but is a shit explorer. If you outfit the Conda for high jump range, don't expect to safely landed on any planets. The SC maneuverability makes you want to eat your input device. The Conda is best as a fast travel ship or an extremity region explorer where you need the absolute highest range and fuel capacity possible. Just get a Krait Phantom or ASPx. 2. Jump range isn't everything, but try to aim for mid 60s LY jump range. This gives you flexibility in travel speed and crossing sparse regions of space. 3. Max out your raw materials prior to leaving the bubble, FSD injections are useful to get to a scoopable star in an emergency or to cross a sparse region of space. 4. Use the FSS on every system that is unexplored and DSS any ELW, WW, or AW. You don't have to scan absolutely everything, knowing what planets produce what signals is useful for saving time. 5. Don't just jump and scan. Take a moment to admire the sights, take some screenshots, and get out in an SRV to blow off some steam. 6. Plan your route. Use in game bookmarks to plot out your route in roughly thousand light-year chunks. Try to keep your route near 1,000 LYs above or below the galactic plane. This ensures you get optimal stellar forge mechanics, decent star density, and fewer previously discovered systems. 7. Use EDSM to find relatively unexplored areas of space. I finished my 3306 exploration expedition with thousands of first discovered systems, lots of ELWs/WWs/AWs/THMCs first discovered, and 777 million CR in exploration data.

@@Drax658 agreed, however less than 55ish LY jump range does make it much more difficult to cross sparse regions of space like those around Beagle Point. I've found that 60-65 LYs is the best for route flexibility. Only reason to go above 67 LYs is when you plan on exploring the outer edges or above/below 2000 LYs off the galactic plane.
@1027284 жыл бұрын
Reading each point I pretty much agree on everything, took me a while to get to the same conclusions, but drew the same conclusions from my experience. I'm exploring in a Krait Phantom and haven't gathered enough mental strength to engineer a conda yet. It does appeal to me though, as it offers more optional internals, including fighters. I haven't so far flown a single fighter and I'd love to race some testicle canyons one day. Without experimenting on coriolis, I'm pretty certain you can get a 70 Ly conda to be versatile enough to do all the things a phantom or aspx can do at 65 Ly, just with a little less maneuverability. In fact, I'm gonna build something now and link it here. And there it is - s.orbis.zone/a39L With room for additions and improvements. You could drop to a 2A PP if you disable more non-vital modules, you could increase shields, get more srv's, another fuel tank, and probably still have 70 Ly jumprange. So the conda does still appeal to me very much. After flying the Type-9, I think I'll manage an Anaconda. Otherwise, fledgling explorers, Jordan's advice is very solid.
@jamesanderton88174 жыл бұрын
@@102728 True, the Anaconda is useful if you have a particular destination in mind and want to f*ck about in a fighter/SRV. But for a dedicated "I want to put my name on a ton of systems and see a bunch of cool sights" exploration journey, the DBX/ASPx/Phantom are the best ships. As I also previously mentioned, the Galactic fringes are where an super min-maxed Conda is the only/best ship for the job.

@vib804 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah. That's what you get when you have a ship with an oversized FSD, and no similarly-sized optional slot for a fuel scoop that can handle it (and the Dolphin became quite competitive with it once it's big slot got unrestricted). Because that's an important rule of exploration... with fuel scoops, size matters most. For example, the 6A fuel scoop is mighty expensive for an AspX if you're just starting (it will cost much more than anything else on the ship). If you want to save money, the 6B is a lot cheaper... and is also cheaper and faster than a 5A too. In fact, the 6C is much cheaper yet and still faster than a 5A... even the 6D isn't that much slower and practically free in comparison. Always go with the biggest fuel scoop you can on an explorer... still won't save your refuel times in a DBX though.

Having now played the game for 4 months, 3 of which have been spent of a circumnavigation of the galaxy, I'd offer up the following tips to any budding explorers. 1. You don't need a mega engineered ship. I'm using an Asp Explorer, the only engineering on which is a level 1 FSD. It can jump 37ly. It is more than sufficient. 2. If you can't decide whether or not to take AFMUs, take them. Accidents happen. 3. The galaxy is large, even daunting, but you realise quickly that it isn't scary. 4. Only do road to riches if you're desperate to rank quickly. It is far more satisfying to gain that rank by actually exploring, finding new things, not following a well trodden path. 5. Decide how you want to explore. My current method is to only jump to G, F and A type stars. This theoretically increases the chances of finding earth likes, and so far my results would verify that. The added bonus is that I will only ever jump to scoopable stars. 6. Consider running a program like ED Scout. It takes the guesswork out of deciding which planets to map. I realise some may see this as a contradiction to point 4. So be it. 7. You will see something new every day. I've jumped to 4000 or so systems which were previously unvisited, but I will never forget my first ringed brown dwarf, black hole, binary earth likes etc etc. It never gets boring. 8. Remember there is time limit. Don't rush to get home. Outline your trip before you set out, but no one will shout at you if you change your plans.

Yeah, you can do Road to Riches... but the reward for exploration isn't credits, it's discoveries. The question of credit balance isn't how it stacks up to other jobs, but can you use exploration to reasonably progress in exploration. And the answer is yes... exploration is cheap, in both startup and running costs. Years ago (back a couple of boosts to the profits for it) I did a run to Colonia. Planned it in ED Discovery to hit the tourist sites along the way. Didn't rush with neutrons or anything, but did largely stick to F, G, and K stars (I was looking to get a few ELWs of my own). Got to Colonia and was half a billion credits richer... and the whole time I wasn't grinding. I was doing what I wanted to do... exploring and seeing things. And the end result was enough money to buy and outfit an Anaconda jump ship for when I wanted to explore the fringes.

Worth noting that using neutron stars to boost fsd range also damages the fsd per jump. Can be fixed with AFM's though, if you're far from the bubble
@7heHorror4 жыл бұрын
Keep the FSD integrity high (>90%) to eliminate chance of malfunction, dropping from supercruise in the deadly stream. Neutron boost route plotting works best on the "neutron highway", which is 1kly off the galactic plane ( +/- 1000 on the first *two* galaxy map coordinates), closer to the core is better. To plot a fuel-conservative route (slightly below max jump range), turn off the Guardian FSD booster while plotting, or - I believe ideal for neutrunning - simply carry additional fuel tanks.
@austinm56304 жыл бұрын
A couple more tips: - If you're low on engineering materials and don't want to farm them, make sure your FSD is a size 5, grade A FSD before you engineer it. This FSD is the most commonly used for the vast majority of dedicated exploration ships like the Asp Explorer or Diamondback Explorer, as well as ships like the Krait MkII and Python that are more generic all-rounder ships. - When farming the Guardian Ruin, bring a ship with Point Defense turrets and land as close as you can to the ruin. Even with the ship "powered off" these will remain active, and will shoot down the missiles from the Guardian Drones, making this entire thing EXPONENTIALLY easier. - If you're planning to use neutron star boosts, make sure you bring an AFMU, since each charged jump will slightly damage your FSD. Class B AFMU's are best for exploration because they have much more "ammunition" (repair capacity) than Class A ones. All AFMUs have no mass, unlike almost all other components, so the normal Class B mass penalty does not apply. If you are rigging a hybrid ship like a Krait or Phantom, you may still want to stick with a Class A one, as its repair rate will be much faster for use in combat. - Before leaving on a long journey, ensure you have enough Raw Materials for multiple synthesis of the following: SRV Repair, SRV Refuel, Life Support, FSD Injection, & AFM Refill. You can find the materials needed for each here: inara.cz/galaxy-synthesis/ - Plasma Slug Railguns are great weapons for use on exploration ships. These give you good damage, long range, and infinite ammo, but also serve another utility function for explorers: they allow you to dump fuel. Simply drop into space and fire shots into the void until your fuel gauge is where you want it to be. This can add 1LY to 5LY to your jump range for the next jump, which can be the difference between making an especially long jump or not. To make this viable, you will probably want to bring only a single Size 1 Railgun, and engineer it to Grade 4 or 5 Lightweight, otherwise it may have too much mass to offer any advantage. - The Dolphin is actually an outstanding exploration ship, capable of reaching similar jump ranges as a Krait MkII or Python, while still bringing everything you need along for the ride - repair, fuel scoop, and even dual SRVs. It is also deceptively fast and agile due to its ability to mount Size 5 engines on a ship that is 90T lighter than a Vulture. If you want to build a dedicated exploration ship, but don't want to invest the cost of a Krait or Python, and don't like the limited number of slots available on a Diamondback Explorer, the Dolphin makes an outstanding choice. Here is my 54LY build that still packs everything you need for a long journey: s.orbis.zone/98_f (NOTE: You can swap the Guardian Shield Booster for any other module of your choice. I chose it because it adds raw shield capacity, which can make certain hard landings more survivable.) - And finally, if you are worried about collecting millions of credits of exploration data, only to have some random asshat gank you right before you get home, remember two things. One, you can logout ans swap to Solo right before you reenter inhabited space. And two, you can always play in Mobius, ensuring you are never alone, but can generally play the game worry free. Hope to see you all in the black!

@austinm56304 жыл бұрын
@@fureimu_64 Point Defense turrets are utility items, not true weapons. Also, they will not shoot the Guardian Sentries. They will only shoot down the missile volleys that the Guardian Sentries fire at your SRV. However, getting hit by these missile volleys will do a lot of SRV damage and send your SRV tumbling around in the air, possibly landing in an unrecoverable position, so it's very important to NOT get hit by them. The PDs just allow you not to worry about them and kill the sentry bots without the threat of a missile volley hanging over you the entire time. As to guns on an explorer, eh, yes and no. During Distant Worlds 2 I tried 5 different ships but the one I took all the way to Sag A* was a Krait Mk II with lightweight pulse turrets on the top and a pair of lightweight plasma slug rails underneath. I was top 5% on the combat CG when we got to Omega Mining, and I'm never top 5% at anything. Those 5T mass were well worth hauling along, but it depends on your ship's weight tolerance. Some lose 1ly every single 1T of mass you add, while others can take an extra 10T and it'll only cost you 0.2ly jump range. For me, I prefer bringing everything I need with me rather than being stuck 10k ly in the black and run out of materials just because I didn't want to haul a 2t mining laser around, or being unable to make a jump because I can't dump 1t of fuel.

Payouts for undiscovered/unmapped planets are significantly higher. 2.6x for being the first to discover, and 2.8x for being the first to map. Mapping gives 4x the payout of simply discovering the planet. You need to go out about 800-1000 LY from human space to start seeing mostly unexplored space. Not even half a % of the galaxy has been discovered, so there's plenty new to discover once you get out far enough. Jump range is extremely useful for this, and is the main obstacle gating you from those higher payouts (and name tags) progression wise. Assuming you want to cross explored space fast. An early 'hack' in the game is that once you have the detailed surface scanner, you can start mapping the terraformed planets in human space for over one million credits each. Codex discoveries unfortunately have laughably bad payouts and are only worth going after if you actually want to fill your codex.

Man economy balance isn't even the worst part though. Remember when it took months of actual gametime to actually buy the Anaconda? Pre mining rework it was exploit chasing and the reason the cobra, python and Anaconda were so popular is you got the best bang for your buck. Engineering has been a bane on the pvp balance since forever. Most imbalanced shit in the game. But the worst is the credit grind was almost required to cover up the lack of tangible progress/gameplay in the game. They don't have a great story that you can impact in a meaningful way. They don't have faction wars that actually matter or inspire allegiance. You can side step all online interactions positive or negative by playing offline. Its all symptoms of the real probelm- they gave us a huge sand box with toys but then only filled it up with 4 buckets of sand. Those of us that stick with it look longingly at the empty parts of the box with a sigh..."one day maybe...one day"

Fdev have just never had any idea how to balance elite. Doing anything that isn't core mining or tritium mining is basically useless if you want to actually buy anything. Missions pay garbage too compared to how much things cost. Want any large ship? Go mining. Want a fleet carrier? Go mining. Need to maintain your carrier? Go mining. Want to upgrade your ship? Go mining. And then fdev has the gall to nerf mining.
@vib804 жыл бұрын
If you're looking to use Road to Riches as a metric for "exploration gameplay" to buy a carrier, then you might as well go with "mining" as exploration gameplay. It isn't real exploration. Exploration doesn't work on a "per hour" basis. When you're out in the black, there's nothing to buy with money. It doesn't matter how many hours you put in... it only matters that when you're done and back you see progression. And you do... years ago I made a half billion credits just going to Colonia, taking my time (no rushing down the neutron highway), and visiting the tourist traps but scanning plenty of F/G/K systems of my own. Payout for exploration went up substantially after that, and then again, and then all those money planets I travelled out to got substantially multiplied yet again when mapping was introduced. I would have easily cleared a couple billion now with that trip and it wasn't even half done yet. I was still planing to go to core, then out to Beagle Point and back. A trip of doing nothing but doing just the exploration gameplay I wanted to do (no grinding) that would now easily pay for a fleet carrier and upkeep for years. If spending weeks doing exploration to earn that isn't your cup of tea, fine... there's mining, you can rush to that end game first. That's a choice you can make... which is balanced. There's a shortcut for people that want it, but if you just want to explore... just head out into the black with no time schedule and a list of places you might want to see. A couple weeks in the black seeing the same credit balance on your left panel every day will show you how silly credits are. You come back to civilization and the number jumps way up in an instant. It's simply not like an hourly wage... if you're just out seeing things doing what you want, it's not a job, it's a vacation.
@ericcson34294 жыл бұрын
@@MapleLeafAce I disagree - FDev did make a balanced game. But 3rd party tools and the community have massively buffed mining (because you can google for overlapping hotspots and best market prices) and buffed exploration (via road to riches tools). You could suggest FDev counter for this by buffing missions, combat, etc but that's another kettle of fish. Seems unfair to blame FDev for us players being an enterprising bunch.
@AltoStratusX14 жыл бұрын
@@ericcson3429 Not even close dude. Risk reward is so skewed. Combat and bounty hunting carries the highest risk of all the activities with the most maintenance cost including rebuy and ammo etc. But pays out the lowest, a pittance. With deep core mining and no third party stuff you can take a cobra and find a regular old void or diamond Hotspot and still make 20 million an hour easy with no risk. The ai pirates spawn upon entering the instance before you have anything and then leave. Even without 3rd party stuff the careers are all skewed in payouts, its one thing if the uneven payment would be attributed to something like risk-but it's not. Which is against their original design philosophy, years ago Fdev wanted people to pick a job based on what they liked, not because one pays put stupidly more then the others.

It makes sense that the most valuable planets are places like water worlds. It's due to them being habitable as humans cant live in the most places in the universe without having to wear a suit or live in a bubble. So water worlds and worlds that could have materials humans could use to survive become the most valuable as frankly we can make fuel or just scoop it directly from stars, black holes are dangerous so people dont care about them. However i will concede stars and black holes needs an reward increase and we should be able to give people the ability to study black holes or collect certain types of resources from them.

That is precisely why I advice EVERYONE to not support these developers in any way, shape, or form. They don't deserve anything. If Star Citizen officially released today, even with all the content it currently has (and there were no bugs), it would LITERALLY blow out Elite Dangerous out of this universe. And Frontier would deserve it.

The exclusion zone of Neutron Stars is very tiny and easily avoided. You want to be flying away from the star when you boost up. White Dwarves on the other hand are blinding death for only a small boost amount. Avoid at all cost.

you can see the exclusion zone if you throttle to zero, look at the star without selecting/targeting it and quickly throttle up/down i don't think there's a single player in the game that wouldn't appreciate always seeing the exclusion zones around neutron/white dwarf stars, NFI why it hasn't been that way since day one, or why at the very least it hasn't been added as an option

All these “professional explorers” always forget that high metal content worlds that are terriformable are worth 1.5m to as much as 4m as well. The base planet alone is worth 150,000 without it. They’re always worth a detailed surface scan. It turns a 30,000 system into a 500,000 system. If you’re exploring why not? Most of the time the idiot who discovered the system before you listen to people like this “professional explorer” who neglected the extra money and you’ll also get first to map bonus along with it. Just space cheddar waiting to be collected. Thanks “professional explorer” for these 10 awesome dumbass tips. Keep me coming.
