Spot on. My vet recommended that I hold off on long walks until around 16 or so months for proper joint growth but my boy loves to play. Loves my kids. My family comes over and he goes nuts and everyone loves him. They are pretty needy which is great to me because I wouldn't want a giant standoff animal in house. I'm so glad that we decided to get one. He is a sweetheart with a ferocious bark and natural protective instincts.

Its pronounced "Boo r Bull" the way you say it sounds ridiculous. Ive owned several of these amazing dogs over the years. They really are amazing! a few interesting facts ive notice with this breed: 1. They use their paws a lot when trying to communicate with its owners, We did not teach this to our Boerboels and the last 5 we had started doing this 2.Once they bond with the family (Around 6 months old) they become so overprotective that they will die to protect your family. My Dog Zeus died attacking a huge Mamba snake to protect my 6 year old son, he passed with the snake still in his mouth.

I had one, it's name was Tyson by name and Tyson by nature. It was the craziest dog I ever had, but I only got him after a year old. And many get cancer on their front shoulder mine did that is what caused his passing. But I knew if I had him since a young puppy he would have been a different dog. He was very aggressive toward strangers, and I left the house for a month and he almost bit me when I returned, yet a friend of mine didn't see him for months and he remembered him but the next time almost bit him. I never had any dog since a puppy who bit or was aggressive to anyone unless ordered. But this dog and small poodle I inherited with a house were very aggressive. Bad owners create aggressive dogs.
@Zedrapazia3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for saying this. :) It's the owners fault that dogs turn bad, not the dogs. My godmother got a Boerboel puppy to protect her garden, but never socialized, trained, or walked him outside of their horse ranch. And then she was surprised he turned destructive and aggressive. They put him down after he bit a cousin he's never seen before that went unattended into their empty farm house and started to take food out of the fridge. The dog didn't knew that person, of course he bit and pinned her down because it was an intruder or even burglar to him. He was trying to protect the family that neglected him. Poor Jagga, he was always nice to me because I played with him whenever I came for a visit. Rest in peace, big boy. I wanted to adopt him from her but she refused to give him away because he was a "bad dog".

South African here. They are wonderful dogs that will scare the heck out of any stranger . From my experience having had two on the farm ,is that they are very friendly with familiar people and lets just say not so friendly with people they don't know. Their owner better be nearby or there is going to be trouble. They are gluttons and will eat whatever they can , therefore they tend to put on weight. You need to watch their diet. I've seen a nasty side to one of our dogs after a smaller dog wouldn't share or stood aside for the Boerboel , who wanted its food. The Boerboel actually mauled it so badly that we had to put the smaller dog( which he used to get along with great before that) down. Another thing is that both Boerboels were killed by a puffadder where our much smaller Jack Russel dogs also got bitten, their neck skin is dragging on the ground for a couple of days afterwards ,and then pulls through and shakes it off. Maybe it had to do with where on the body and also the strength of the puffadder bite.

This dog is not for everyone!! The Boreboel is a beautiful incredibly large strong dog who was naturally bred to protect sheep, other farm animals and the home from lions, hyenas, leopards, etc., on large properties in South Africa, without needing human direction, so this means they are independent-minded, but they are gentle with their families and can be trained to listen to commands when they need to be around other people, like when they go the vet. If owners are unable to handle them or they exploit their natural instincts in normal environments like neighborhoods, an apartment complex, the local dog park etc., it will be disastrous.

Question for all of the experienced Boerboel owners out there: I have had Great Danes and Bullmastiffs nearly my entire life (I’m 45 now) and have worked for the local Humane Society and volunteered for a Mastiff Rescue in the past. I also have a pretty decent amount of time with Cane Corso and Presa Canario AND have spent a considerable amount of time working specifically with aggressive giant breeds (see above) at a private no-kill rescue here in Florida. I’ve been doing my due diligence and have been reading as much as I possibly can find about Boerboel ownership and I am confident that I have the experience, patience, and temperament that would make me a good match for one or two of these beautiful critters. So with that brief little synopsis given above, is there any other resource that anyone would recommend or advice you can give for a prospective owner? I won’t be making any serious inquiries with breeders for another year or two (current residential situation is untenable for any large breed), but I WOULD like to maybe open some communications with breeders so the relationship is well established once the time comes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I LOVE YOUR PERSPECTIVE AND CONSIDERATION BEFORE BUYING! They adapt to the owner's lifestyle, automatically protects, loves unconditionally and REALLY reacts to YOUR emotions. You get uncomfortable around someone or anxiety raises, they become alert. You let someone in, they will allow them in. You don't let someone in... They prob won't make it in or leave... Train as you would your other dogs, not a high maintenance dog, just don't over feed and don't force interaction they aren't comfortable with. All dogs have their reasons for not wanting affection from certain people. They are fine for novice owners, as long as YOU are the boss. Just as you are obviously used to being with your other dogs. Chihuahuas are more unpredictable

I had my boy's tail docked for that very reason. It is not because he will injury it while working because he is a house dog. It is very tough for a happy giant to heal because they are always wagging their tails. Vicious cycle. One thing to add is that the breed is extremely independent and there are a large percentage of breeders, specifically in the US, that really take care of breeding the right temperament. This is incredibly important. This dog requires a very experienced hand, and often, depending on the temperament, an expert hand. They won’t get adopted either, so if you get one, you better have a lot of experience, have a plan, me have plenty of time for exercise, training, and socialization.
