Long time PIMO elder here.. You're basically right and your advice is spot on. The MS and elder procedure when moving is actually basically identical except elders will generally be used for parts before the official announcement. Both MS and elder need CO approval (which can occur between visits). So if you move and tell the elders you don't want to serve, you won't be appointed. Regardless of MS or elder, tell the new elders ASAP. However, be prepared for a guilt inducing shepherding call.

I faded in the 90s - unintentionally. Here is what works, if your in a hall for a long time switch halls locally such as across town . After a period of time move to another part of the country but do not move your card. You just move no advanced warning. If you miss the area you are from after a year or more , return but not in the same congregation territory.

Great video, and lots of good advice in the comments!! I woke up during the pandemic and faded before meetings went back to in-person. I must admit that fading has been challenging because I have 3 children (18,14 and 7 yrs) with my POMI ex husband who is DF. Our 18 is DF as well, and is POMO. I also rent a house from an elder. I 100% would have formally disassociated myself if it weren’t for those two factors . My children only know JW’s, and I’m trying to make this as easy as possible for them. They’ve been homeschooled their whole lives. A few things I did to help them meet non witness friends was, I put them in sports teams and put our youngest in public school . I’m attempting to desensitize their JW consciences. They do know where I stand. I am completely honest with them. I know it’s only a matter of time before the elders show up at my door, but thankfully my elder landlord is super chill and just believes that we are all traumatized from the divorce which has worked to my advantage so far.

If you are confronted by the Elders, tell them that you have a PERSONAL PRIVATE CONSCIENCE ISSUE. Tell them NO MORE .If they continue to question you ask them WHAT PART OF PERSONAL PRIVATE CONSCIENCE ISSUE DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND? you must say no more. It worked for Jesus when he was bullied by the scribes and Pharisees. So silence is GOLDEN. I've done this and been totally inactive for 4 years now and have not been shunned by family and friends. I realise that age can be a problem, but remember they are obliged to respect your CONSCIENCE. best of LUCK ha ha (naughty word)for the future.....

The best example ever is of Jesus when he was bullied by the scribes and Pharisees, SILENCE, first step is to become TOTALLY INACTIVE and if questioned by anyone including the elders, tell them that you have a PERSONAL PRIVATE CONSCIENCE ISSUE, tell them NO MORE if they continue to ask questions say to them WHAT PART OF PERSONAL, PRIVATE CONSCIENCE ISSUE DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND? You must remain SILENT. All the best for the future.

I left at the beginning of the pandemic, divorced my very controlling abusive exhusband, changed my phone number and moved several times. I still have contact with a close friend thats PIMI and ive never been announced or anything. We chat every day, but never bring up religion or my current personal life, although im sure she knows ive moved on with a “worldly man” (just got remarried in September!) we have an unspoken “Dont ask, Dont tell” thing so we can keep our friendship going. Pandemic made it swift and easy to fade out and move on. I also was never prominent in any sort of way to begin with so they never really cared about me anyway to chase me down or interrogate me or anything like that.

I think the biggest part about fading is your mental health. You are entering into a spiritual and mentally draining war over your own mind and common sense. Be ready to accept the fact that you WILL be alone on this journey. What helped me a lot was writing my action plan down and sticking to it. It's easier if you were just one of the friends. Putting your social networks on lockdown is an absolute must. A hight demanding job is a great idea to become unavailable. Taking on odd shift hours are also a great excuse why you didn't make it to the meeting. Becoming unavailable more an more until eventually nobody will want to even ask where you have been. I found that fading from the newly moved to congregation was fairly easy as long as you stuck with the "I'm just really tied up with work". Family on the other hand is a whole nother level of manipulation you will have to address. The I'm too busy excuse will only work for so long. The biggest thing for me was to NOT get dragged into a spiritual conversation with family. I always leave it at I am having some personal doubts and am working on it. As harsh as it may sound but you will have to master their own theocratic warfare and fight fire with fire. If they are not entitled to the truth then they won't hear the truth coming from my lips. It's a helluva lot easier if you are married to a worldly person. I use my wife for a bunch of excuses. She is fine with that lol. I got an American flag flying and celebrate every holiday under the sun. Even if the question ever arose my wife is more than happy to step in and tell my family that she was the one that bought the Christmas tree and put up the flag pole. Lol....there is a reason they are so against marrying an unbeliever.

@@jessicanerpio-cauldwell4987 well to make a long story short I married my now wife to be able to get reinstated just to perfect my fade lol. It's a crazy story but I had to fight fire with fire. I did it all for my kids sake so they could have somewhat of a relationship with their grandparents. I got married and then WITH the support of my wife got reinstated just for an announcement to be made at the hall. Recorded the announcement sent it off to my parents in a text and that was the last time these clowns saw me at the hall. My parents live in another state so keeping tabs on me it pretty much impossible. Nobody really knows my address and my parents know better than to talk to me about the truth lol. Mainly they enjoy their time with the kids and that's about it. My wife is pretty vocal about how we are raising our kids and believe me there is no Kaleb and Sophia shit in our house lol. Even when they spend time with the grandparents. Being married to an unbeliever is a must in my book for attempting a fade.

Great advice for fading. Relocating to another congregation should be the initial step to fading. You are very unlikely to be disfellowshipped by elders in another congregation that do not really know you. I was able to successfully fade by relocating to a congregation several states away (Nebraska to Washington). I was able to fade more quickly getting the congregation to believe I was just visiting.

"Enemy of happiness"... 1st time I've thought of it this way! Basically, it's preached that we're supposed to be "happy" bc our God is... hmmm.. k?!! Actually, the ONLY times I remember being truly "happy" whenever I was active... was when we'd have fun get-togethers!! Even then, there was ALWAYS the air of that feeling that we had to watch everything we said or did! Though I would... it wasn't ever without stressing! Going home, in my home... I could basically relax! It got to the point, where I didn't even want to go out anywhere that I might run into another jw! Esp...if I'd missed a previous mtg! 😔

Truth is: leaving requires preparation. I mean thorough planning. It's slightly easier if you are single, but if you are married and/or have grown-up children, it will take much more careful planning. Top on my list of pre-exit plans are: 1. Acquire a high value skill. You don't want to depend on anyone when you eventually leave. 2. Build friendships with respectable non-JWs, (or, if possible, reconnect with old friends) considering that you probably gave up all your friends when you joined (for those who weren't born in). You'd need a lot of contacts when you are out.

My fading story seems uneventful compared to some. I had been inactive concerning field service for a couple of years before I phased out meetings (working nights is a great excuse) when I met a non-Jw woman and married her. I moved when I got married. Different address, different phone number. I disappeared, except the new house was across the street and down a couple of houses down from one of the elders (one I never really cared for). Again, working nights were great because people don't bug you during the day. As far as I know, there was no effort to make shepherding calls or otherwise contact me. I got divorced after a couple of years and moved again and drifted spiritually for a few years but finally decided that life is not for me. I am now properly baptized in the Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod). Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura, Sola Christos, Sola Gloria Deo.

Good question! I suppose it’s different for everyone and every area. In my area, we did a LOT of return visits so service while fading was pretty easy. If you do have to go door to door, knock lightly or cover the doorbell with your thumb but DON’T press. Make every house a “Not at home”. Also if you switch congregations, you may be able to skip service altogether. Just turn in a few hours each month while you are fading and then once you get to the POMO stage, stop all contact with any elder. Once you get past the inactive milestone (I believe it’s 6 months), they should leave you alone.

Just go out ,occasionally plants seeds USING THE BIBLE ONLY!!! in street work that would hide you as a fader ,Word of caution do not place Jw literature, and continue to fade thats what work for me ,also DONT PUT ANY MONEY IN THOSE CONTRIBUTION BOXES. Matt 7:6

Depends how you do it. If it’s done in a smart way, you might be shunned by friends but you could save your relationship with your family. For a lot of people saving those family ties is worth it.

@@exjwdiaries That’s tough, because I faded, but I wasn’t really conscience of what I was doing at the time that I did it which was a looooong time ago, before fading was even a thing or even spoken about by the ex-jw community 🤔It was just the way I moved, but I didn’t PLAN on doing it that way it just sort of happened.

I’m going to probably do a video on how I did it to see if it could help others. You gave some excellent tips btw… and this is a interesting topic amongst the Ex-Jw community. Please keep up the good activism!!!!❤️

I faded out. When I was 19 I was DFed. I didn’t really follow anymore and I was living in sin but they really didn’t know that. My boyfriend/ future hubby was also DFed. We moved cross country to be closer to his parents. I was 20 years old freshly married and over 3,000 miles away from my family and friends. His parent who are JWs were going and after a while I ended up going back and so did my hubby. I tried to be a good little witness girl but I’ve never really felt comfortable with witnessing and pretending to be good. I faded and so did my hubby. I at this time completely disagree with the organization. I’m a spiritual person but I don’t agree with any organized religion. My hubby still go occasionally and his family is still completely devoted. My mother is still active ima assuming because she hasn’t spoken to me in I think 3 or 4 years. My dad is wonderful and he and my grandma faded. We all feel the same way. I’m still 3,000 miles away though. I love my life and my purpose. I’m the owner of a wellness facility that helps people heal themselves through mind, body and spirit. We have been able to help so many.

Fading is the best way to leave JW. I know 2 gay active JW at KH but say left lifestyle alone. Umm ok yeah. But you owe no one an explanation you have right to change your mind on anything in your life. This is good video...just leave JW by fading tell them nothing. My family thinks I am mentally unstable only cause went to college AND NOT a JW. I think they are confused cause in the JW social club where someone tells you what to do. Nice tips and you have nice voice too

And what do you do when you're assigned a talk😳

I’d say go ahead and give the talk. The less red flags you raise, the better. Sometimes you just have to put on that Oscar worthy performance if you want to fade without getting caught.
