I’m petite and I just been loving the everything cropped. Especially tops and sweaters. These past years with everything being cropped has been such a blessing for us petites. Tops finally hit as if I got it custom made instead of being too long. I hope fashion houses keep this up. Also midi skirts look absolutely great on me even though I’m petite. It gives a look of curves on me and a classic 90s look that I love.

I am short waisted and really enjoy the cropped sweaters and other tops, as long as they hit my natural waist. I am 75, so definitely no skin showing! But when they hit the waist or bit longer, they are so much more flattering than longer sweaters. I am also petite, 5'1-1/2", 113 lbs., small shoulders, with a large bust. Being older, I also prefer mid length skirts, but ones that fall below my calf. If they are available in a petite size, that works the best. I don't care for knee length skirts/dresses anymore, even though my legs are a nice shape. It's the veins that I don't like to show. Self tanner helps, but isn't the solution.

Some of the trends-like crazy art prints-can be pretty easily sourced from vintage shops. This might be an option for those who want to seek a (relatively) inexpensive way to try out a trend. I have found some great options in skirts, blouses, and statement coats (e.g., Pucci-inspired designs) dating from the 50s through the 70s. Plus the search itself can be fun!

It depends what quality the fur is and how it's placed. You are not going to be able to walk through the muddy countryside or splash in puddles but for everyday city wear it could be OK. I used to wear cardigan UGGs in the winter when I was living in the UK and if you know anything about Britain it's always raining. They rarely got wet because I avoided puddles. Cheaper boots always got really soggy as soon as there was a little bit of drizzle but the more expensive ones didn't. It was as if the surface would get damp but the inside of the shoe didn't. You get what you pay for.

I hear you on the dangly earrings! My lobes got so stretched out I finally went to a Plastic Surgeon...for $350 he "refurbished" my lobes. Bonus is that he suggested he take an extra 10% of tissue out to make them look younger. Cost included re-piercing and I couldn't be happier. I don't wear super dangly long earrings now unless I specifically need them to create an evening look.

Im from Auckland and have lived in the UK and Australia for the last 15 years...currently in Melbourne so dreaming of wearing something other than leggings and puffer right now lol! I feel like these tips are for a slightly reserved, constrained culture such as in Auckland, and overseas i find you can kinda just wear sequins during the day or a super cropped top under a coat, even over the age of 35 (shock horror) and it seems to be a freer experience, whereas in Akl it's more of an issue where people can often stare and there's an attitude of "who does she think she is, wearing sequins!". Thing with cost per wear is true I agree, only you have to remind yourself to just wear the things. Don't keep them for "special". I wore a great dress one summer on the Coromandel and my own Dad said "You're not in Saint Tropez". My response, "and??!" I'm on the side of less rules and more freedom of self expression. :)

Oh yes i totally hear what you're saying about NZ culture. I'm from Sydney and totally appreciate what you're saying. My thoughts and choices in this video were more about reflecting the difficult times we are in and trying to help people make sensible fashion decisions. In my experience so many women own far more clothes than they actually wear because like you said most of us keep them for special - it's a hard habit to break. I'm all for freedom of expression too but I'm more tempered than ever about it in the current climate. Thanks for sharing your thoughts - I really appreciate it and it's always a good reminder to not cling to outdated "rules" :)

Many of the crop tops and cut outs are worn best by women who are slim, fit and young. I'm 62 am fairly fit and slim but wouldn't wear either of those styles also I live in Manitoba, Canada, where temps can dip down to -50°Celsius in the winter. Cut outs will be mighty chilly here I reckon. But the head to toe puffer wear would be right up my alley😊 summer is just about done here, it usually snows by Halloween 😕 I'm with you on the rest of your thumbs down. Today I'm wearing a white v-neck tee tucked into a pair of charcoal cuffed trousers, white leather Adidas trainers, and a black moto jacket to keep some my work wear pieces relevant after retirement.... I'm not a fashion victim anymore at my age. I lean towards classic pieces with an edgy vibe. Love your style Leoni ❤❤❤

So true about those frigid temps. Manitobans have been wearing down-filled puffers, both long and short, for a long time and will continue....especially since real fur coats (though absolutely the warmest) are just not worn nowadays.

As a fellow Canadian I couldn’t agree more! Some trends just don’t make sense for our climate. Or are perpetually trendy lol @@carolegeddes998 i beg to differ, I wear mine all the time 😁 (well, except during those 8 weeks we call summer haha) even high quality puffers don’t work for me - I just can’t bear the cold. I have to agree with you 100% on these trends to skip. The fluffy/furry shoes look like bedroom slippers, and will be ruined in short order if it's muddy or raining out. They will show dirt with regular wear and...how, exactly, would you clean them? The oversized knits - gah! I'm a knitter, and there is no more effective way to look like you are 20 lbs heavier than to put on an oversized sweater knit from huge yarn. Back when I was teaching classes on knitting sweaters, I'd always-always bring up this point. The only cropped clothing I'm into is cropped cardigans. I do love midi skirts, but I'm 5'7", and that's a look I can pull off, especially with proper footwear selection. I personally detest maxi skirts, and think they look frumpy and unstylish on everyone, regardless of whether they are in-style or not. I've worn them like 20 years ago, and later came to realize that I looked frumpy and unstylish (and older!) when wearing them, so that was the end of that. Anyway, it's always amusing to me that fashion videos such as yours generate so much "controversy" over an opinion. I have never understood why someone's sense of identity or self-worth is so tied up with what someone else - a stranger - thinks of clothes they like or don't like 🤷🏻♀️. Cheers, -Sonya
@Thestyleinsider.3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the "controversy" angle Sonya. It does always surprise me when people come out swinging because they have a difference of opinion. If I don't like or agree with what someone says I just tend to move on or not watch them again - I'd never lash out. But hey it seems to be the world we now live in. The old adage: "If you have nothing nice to say . . . . don't say anything" seems to have fallen by the wayside. Oh well :)

I think it’s always so fun to get to know peoples thoughts and opinions on fashion as it’s a complete personal interpretation. That’s the wonderful thing about the art of fashion. We can create our own world of joy by it. I think on a practical side all these recommendations make total sense. So I have to say some of these trends I do love/ or rather am reincorporating back in my day to day for fall since they never left my closet - my big statement earrings, unique artistic pieces, or bold pieces - sequins included. Great video. I totally agree with what you are saying about cost per wear. Being an oldie, we have to think about cost an awful lot. We generally don’t have the money to have such choice of clothes. Also, being older, in my case a lot older, we can’t waltz about in sequins during the daytime or we risk looking like some dotty old lady who has lost her marbles. When you get to a certain age, it’s advisable to pare your look down and stick to quality classics (a rule which can be followed at any age and you can afford to be more outrageous with accessories, which can be bought cheaper). I would consider wearing a sparkly camisole under a trouser suit for instance during the day but, anything more full on bling I would have to save for evenings. So it all boils down to an age thing really. Lovely young things can get away with a lot more than we can. I have two daughters of 30 plus who would be saying “Mother, you can’t go out dressed like that” if I was anywhere near over the top with my choices. Yes, it’s definitely an age thing!!!!!

Great video, Leonie! These dreadful skirts and earrings have been fashion pet peeves of mine for years. These skirts don't do anyhing flattering for any woman. If you have a fabulous figure they'll look less bad - like everything - but I don't know where to start. The pattern, the length, the cut... It all signals something like being an efficient, traditional housewife. I think earrings should have room to dangle and swing. So they should end a few centimetres above the shoulders. Slope core: I grew up in an alpine country where it's still common for children to be dressed in ski wear when there's snow. What I remember from my childhood is that those trousers rustle at every step, they are unbearably hot indoors, and they are extremely uncomfortable to take on and off. Don't get me started on using a bathroom when wearing them. Finally, the bold knit wear and pattern remind me of something I heard from a stylist on YT years ago and that has stuck with me ever since: Any outfit should enhance the beauty and personality of the person wearing it and not the other way round. Basically, you should see the person first, then the clothes. If you notice the outfit fist, it's wrong.

I agree with most, except the following: 1. At 4’11” most crop tops and jackets hit me right at, or just below, the waistline of high-rise pants, so they are perfect on me, making my legs look longer!. 2. I live in a Colorado mountain town -with a ski resort- so ‘ski style’ is *always* a thing here. Very practical for the most bitterly cold days, but when I wear it, I most likely WILL be on my way to ski! I feel the same about midi skirts: either just below the knee, or at lower calf, *not* mid-calf! Mid-calf looks frumpy on me and, even though I’m thin, makes my legs look chunky and oddly bow-legged (which they aren’t). BTW…. We all want to know where we can find that beautiful button-down you’re wearing! 😍

I totally agree with both of your points. Cropped pieces make SO much sense when you are petite and ski style also makes perfect sense when you live in ski country. The shirt I'm wearing is by a small New Zealand label and I've linked it in the description box in case you want to check it out. Thanks for watching :)

Absolutely spot in with these trends to avoid! I don’t know if it’s lockdown or if designers have simply run out of ideas but a lot of it is just weird at the moment. I can’t get on board with all this oversized clothing - it just looks ill fitting. Anyway, a fantastic wrap up of everything I’ll be avoiding in our next spin into Autumn in Australia. 😊

Thanks Jane and yes I know what you mean about looking ill fitting. I personally like the look but I play it carefully :)

Well done! I fully agree with nearly all of your opinions, and I especially love that you are practical about fashion, and not at all catty in the way you express yourself. But the one look that I do love is a cropped top under an oversized blazer. Ahhh, if only I had the abs to wear that look!

Totally agree with all those style trends. Love your practical advice. Being in Rotorua I went shopping yesterday, love and purchased tops and blouses in mid green, bright pink and cobalt blue. Looking at your spring and summer trends. Mid green is new for me and looks fabulous. Love your work.

I understand perfectly what you point out here, Leonie! I agree. I know, everyone can wear whatever she/he likes, but sometimes we need to see it also from other perspective. Designers apparenty are trying too hard, nowadays. Going to extreme, it puts fashion more to laugh at than to admire or simply be comfortable.

I have such skinny ankles and calves that a midi length looks strange. But they are definitely beautiful on the right person! I love seeing people in unique prints and I think it adds interest to their outfit and be used for long term

Hi Leonie! I appreciate your honest opinions about these trends. I’ve never considered that midi dresses or midi skirts fall on a part of the leg that is unflattering! I like the look but will be more careful with it in the future. I agree with you about the super oversized knits. I love the idea of it but I don’t think there comes a point where size can overpower an entire outfit. I really like the slipper shoe look! I’ve been holding back on investing in it because I keep thinking it wont last but I keep seeing every season! I do like the loud prints as it’s something different for the fall and I love the ski look! I understand why a head to toe look in it might be a bit much if you aren’t skiing but I fully plan on investing in some elements of this trend in the fall. As always thank you for the advice! P.S. I would love to watch your blogs! :)

I like this video and agree with your selections no fluffy footwear, big earrings are played out and definitely effects your earlibs I use to wear massive earrings in the 80s and 90s No super size knits or coats oversized is as far go. I don't like to feel sloppy in my clothes, Now I wear drop pearl earrings or smaller hoops. I love the tops you provide, great channel.

Cropped tops are hit and miss with me because I am busty and have broad shoulders so sometimes I look like a linebacker in those pieces but I like the idea of them layered over longer pieces. Midi skirts look good on me if they are flowy and loose and worn with higher heeled shoes or boots, I have short legs. Agree about the sequins and oversized puffy coats, and really huge earrings, yikes 😳

I definitely do not understand crop tops in autumn/winter and the problem with huge earrings is mostly that those stretch your ear loops, and it just looks horrible 🤷🏼♀️ but I totally love midi skirts ☺️😍
@Cheree_Wright3 жыл бұрын
I think the fitted midi skirt looks nice. Especially if it has a little split in the back. I also love sequins. I think we should all still wear them, but obviously they can’t be worn as often as a basic. I love the crazy puffers too. Winter/fall should still be fun. I’m not a fan of the fluffy furry shoes, but fall/ winter is the best season to wear them

Love crop sweaters, midi length ( it falls below the mid calf). Works for me at five feet tall with longer waist. Not interested in furry feet, too impractical and odd. Love big sweaters and blazers. I think it comes down to how you style something and how it makes you feel 😎

I 100% agree. I actually walk on the treadmill and think if I buy this how many ways can I wear it. I gave away, sold or donated clothes that are just a one look outfit. If I can't wear it at least 5 ways then it goes back or not worn and is a total loss. I am 5'4 and some of those things just drown on me. I spend so much money on things I should not have bought. I am learning. I know I know better but being sheltered away has not helped. Thank you so much you gorgeous you!
