To this day, I think of two Harris Tweed blazers that I parted with and a purple pair of Converse sneakers. Wasn’t making good use of the items at the time, but would have later. Accessories are the key for me these days. Organizers with clear drawers keep all at hand and save time. Accommodate rings, bracelets, necklaces. Forget the little boxes.

Fear of judgment! That’s definitely me! I’ve worked retail all of my adult life. It was my career and I loved every second. Through the years I’ve bought beautiful pieces but I was never comfortable of wearing them because I was surrounded by people who always dressed down and always felt the need to comment on what I was wearing :(. I am still buying pretty dresses, suits, blouse and wear them on holidays or on a night out with hubby and my grown children…always away from the people who still feel the need to say something 40 years later.

I agree with everything and I’ve definitely done all of these things! Great tips of properly merchandising your accessories and wardrobe - as they say, out of sight, out of mind, and I hate to come across beautiful pieces that I haven’t reached for because I simply didn’t see them when getting ready! As for wearing a lot of black, I will say that black can look more expensive. I think it’s harder for me to find colorful items at more affordable price points because color is very unforgiving when it comes to the fabric or manufacturing; every stitch out of place, bad lining, or misaligned seam will stand out, and any sheerness that isn’t intentional looks off. I do live for those affordable gems, but I acknowledge that it’s often a trade off. I ordered a maxi dress in black and red and the red unfortunately highlighted too many construction “issues” (to me), so I returned it. It’s always worth trying though! Just to push yourself out of the style rut.

@@Thestyleinsider. Wishful thinking perhaps? I dunno. There's also been a lot of talk here in Toronto about a second "Roaring 20s" once all the restrictions are over so there may be plenty of occasions after all. :)

My god, I've made so many of the same faux Pas! And have recently been trying to make some changes so I don't keep making them! I'm the opposite of you when it comes to colours though, and now trying to inject more neutrals to my very colourful wardrobe 🤣
@Thestyleinsider.3 жыл бұрын
Ah that's interesting - I imagine it will be rather hard trying to add my neutrals if you've been a fan of colour ;)

Another magpie here. I have started trying them on and take a photo...and it dissuades me. I also take a close up photo of the fabric so that I can enjoy it later...thinking I will start a Pinterest board on fantasy items in lieu of purchasing. And recycling with Bustle boutique and/or Recycle Boutique...feels good to know someone will wear them and that a little money will come my way. Less is more! I turn 60 is a couple weeks, and I think I have finally cracked my style lol
@Thestyleinsider.3 жыл бұрын
Wow what a great idea and that's so interesting that you take a photo when you are trying on and it dissuades you. Why do you think that is?
@chrissengemmill60243 жыл бұрын
@@Thestyleinsider. I think because I am more critical/objective of a photo of myself and removed from the intoxication of the item, if you know what I mean. I am learning to "love/appreciate" items, but not have to HAVE them. I can appreciate the beauty/art of the material or piece in a souvenir photo. And yes, I am going to start a Pinterest board on this from here on out :-) Found a great "le Smoking" yesterday at the opshop to experiment with ($10), so worth a gamble (even with $40 of tailoring) vs. Helen Cherry at $800. Also a couple great basics in the men's section at H&M (sustainable range).
@Thestyleinsider.3 жыл бұрын
@@chrissengemmill6024 that makes so much sense to me. Where’s your favourite op shop? Sounds like you’re in NZ??
@chrissengemmill60243 жыл бұрын
@@Thestyleinsider. yes, in Hamilton. for op shops I have been most successful at Hospice (both in Claudelands and Lake Road), and yesterday found the Le Smoking at the new St. John's in Frankton. For Designer recycle you have to go to Bustle (River Road). Had a good success with my daughters at Recycle on Grey st. the other day. I mix vintage with Assembly label, Everlane, and Juliette Hogan (on sale) for the most part these days. A few Helen Cherry and BASH pieces but hard to justify these days (recently made redundant, trying to reinvent myself). Black, camel/tan and grey is the palette with a few surprises in there. If you are ever in Hamilton please let me know!

Nice video! :) I think my biggest fashion faux pas items are dresses or skirts that are (too) short. I am tall (almost tall as you at 179,5 cm or 5 11’) and I have bought dresses that were regular or more on the mini length but shorter on me of course. After a couple of seasons and/or when I have aged now I dont feel that great in them anymore so they end up in my storage. If I found a way to wear them still in my 40s I’d be happy...Otherwise I might have to get rid of them now... As for sequinned items I have some and find that I reach for them during Christmas time. So I actually have a lot of use since they are still in style season after season. When it comes to colour, I have always loved colours but my problem is living in Northern Europe there sometimes isnt enough colour on offer. Accessories I like but since working from home I sometimes forget to wear them and I dont know how people cope with them in a rush situation, especially when you are running late and trying to put on that necklace which seems to be a struggle to hook or finding that special best that you were planning to wear...😄 So in a way I guess my other big fashion faux is usually being in a hurry and simply not having enough time to put all the pieces together, or sometimes finding that the dress you were about to wear just dont look good on you or just not feeling it...😅 Another fashion faux are jackets that are too short, this usually happens with sports clothing, I might have mistakenly bought or ordered a sports down coat that is a bit short in length or tight when wearing heavy layers during winter. My weight fluctuates+/-3-5 kilos especially now with covid-19 and not being able to exercise as much as I usually would, so I keep items in my closet even if they are a tight since I know they will fit me again :)

I'm guilty of buying clothing that Looks Amazing on someone else (especially Influencers), but doesn't work for me. I don't usually wear a lot of neutrals, I think they wash me out & I feel Blah. I do wear color, but it's seasonal. Bright colors in the summer & more jewel tones in the fall & winter.

Sadly I have to admit that I can relate to all the list 😐 I have got rid of pieces that they were staples and I used to buy shoes smaller than my size. By the way I wear a size 7 This makes me realize I need to have a talk to my daughters. They are only nine and 12 hopefully I can avoid this painful situations for them 🥰 thank you 😊

Yes sparkly thing tried it didnt like it. It was expensive, so thank God was able to sell it without loosing too much money. Too smalll shoes yes done it but for different reason . Size 11.5-12 US, its hard to find High fashion european brands, so i would squeeze my feet in smaller sizes. I dont do it anymore. Although last year got BV mesh square toes, they have some stretch, but of course little too small, but i will wear them 🤪 too small or not fitting as i would like, at that size, i dont do it anymore. Although last year got Redone vintage Levis they are too small, although i remember that those jeans need to be strech out, wearing them wet 😳 well lucky for me , right now wide leg trends, so i will keep them and see how i feel next year or so. I dont have problem wearing color or something more extravagant . Accessories i love now. Including, headscarves, hair accessories, head pieces …but for many years, all i wore only one necklace and earrings.. i do need better organization of my closet. Another day, i realize that i forgot some amazing outfits, that i have 😳😂 have a blessed day 🙏💕

Honey, I am a rainbow Magpie. Even worse than you - I love facial glitter and body glitter. Am not a stripper. But, I was a little hurt when my husband's ex-sister in law (who he works for) said, oh yeah, she wears all that stripper glitter. I was really sad, and now realize, it is not her business. On sparkly pieces, I limit this way: if I can sew it, then I can have it because it won't cost a fortune. I sew for myself and fun, not as a business. It has been so useful in my fashion journey.
