One tip that i will never forget is to not take fashion too seriously basically have fun with it
@vesai85066 ай бұрын
The most important tip
@supdota29 ай бұрын
one thing that has worked for me wonderfully is making a disctinction between *fashion* and *styling* . i'm not into fashion as much as i'm into styling. for me fashion is about trends, brands, pieces, prices, new drops, being new and creative, and look good in the process; styling is about colors, silhouette, proportions, visual tension, and being practical. i know next to nothing about trends and brands, and that has been a big blessing, because i know big brands are expensive, and trends are only trends. edit: more precise use of words to eliminate misinterpretation.
@tal44669 ай бұрын
Everything you said about styling is generally a derivative of what you're calling fashion. I can kinda see what you mean, but the distinction seem a bit insignificant; people don't give fashion tips without a consideration of styling, and I guess you could say styling tips don't rely on fashion as much, though it's a stretch to say you're not into fashion because you want to emphasize that you focus on the subtleties/intricacies of creation.
@supdota29 ай бұрын
@@tal4466 i respect your opinion, and maybe i'm the minority, but i think i have a different understanding of what fashion is. I see a lot of videos of people saying "my hat is from x brand, these pants are from y brand, the jacket is from z brand", instead of "i love this and this color combo, and my pants are oversized because it looks flattering, etc". I sometimes watch "what people are wearing" videos to find inspiration, but as soon as they start saying "this is from xyz brand" i just skip to the end. For an observer, i could be interpreted as being into fashion, but precisely speaking i'm not really into fashion, and i find it awkward to converse with other people who's into fashion who talk about this "new drop" from xyz brand, ame leon dore, fear of god, yeezys, whatever is out there. And I'm not a fan of wearing whatever is trendy to make yourself look like you're well dressed, but losing who you really are in the process. ofc not everyone is like that, but i try to narrow it down and not create confusion the next time i talk to someone who's into fashion. i hope that made more sense.
@tal44669 ай бұрын
@@supdota2 Alright yea I can see the communicative value in some contexts, it can be rhetorically useful even if it doesn't hold up too well under scrutiny. However, I think most people are into styling as you'd call it, even those who list off brand names in the "what are you wearing" videos. Their interest doesn't need to be expressed plainly to be recognized because you can see it for yourself in the way they've put things together. There is an archetype to contend with, in whatever amount, but people are people and there should be grace in framing to avoid simple antagonism that doesn't provoke meaningful change.
@nate_astro9 ай бұрын
One of the most important tips I could tell anyone getting into fashion is to think about texture/material. A lot of fits can fall flat because they LOOK flat - adding texture to an outfit can REALLY make something "plain" start to pop. Really nice all black fits tend to use a lot of texture. Instead of wearing a cotton tee, wear a knitted shirt. Instead of wearing a typical pair of denim, try a pair with some fraying or repairs - or just flat out replace it with some linen trousers. This can even apply to your accessories too, I don't wear ties as much as I'd love to but when I do, I have this banger knitted square tipped tie I'll wear instead of the usual cotton or polyester triangle tipped ones. Texture makes a WORLD of a difference! #pvv The last time I went a day without socials was when I took a break from everything for a couple months around wintertime in 2022. The full detox was refreshing, but I missed seeing all the art and clothing in my feeds.

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to." [MovieMaker Magazine #53 - Winter, January 22, 2004 ] Jim Jarmusch.

For me, the best tip is keeping it simple. I’ve majorly minimized my wardrobe, stopped trying to get funky with colors, and really focused on the fit and quality of the pieces. I’d say my style nowadays is basic, but I love everything I have and know it’ll get me through the long haul. Plus, I still get compliments on what I’m wearing fairly regularly. It doesn’t take much to look good. You don’t have to break molds. Do that if it’s your thing, but most people aren’t actually paying that much attention to you anyway, ya know?

Really appreciated this! Especially your commentary on copying while still finding yourself or using reference points to build on and personalize, rather than simply stealing ideas or outright theft. I think there’s a major difference in being inspired, doing your research on those inspirations, honouring those inspirations/ giving them their flowers, and being thoughtful about how you bring those inspirations to your style, fashion and any other aspect of who you are, what you do and how you move in the world. That’s very different from theft or simply stealing - there’s a certain lack of intentionality, care and conscientiousness, and some entitlement there that not only falls flat, but can bring us into that harmful space of cultural appropriation and quite frankly colonialism. And so that said, I don’t think you explicitly said it so much as weaved it throughout the video and your other content in general, I think another “tip” or principle even, in fashion and style that feels so important is being ethical in how you do it! And for folks who might feel this conversation and the ideas it comes from is maybe too political, the personal is political, baby! Including personal fashion and style. Anyway, thanks for a really thoughtful piece that really hits home at this point in my life and style journey 🙂

So I went Ralph Lauren love black label and purple label. I basically have 2 styles and it's takin time to collect those high end peaces. Rite now I'm saving for a purple label leather jacket.

It was cringy but I was able to find things i liked and didn't like. I was in a suicideboys phase where I tried to wear things i saw they wore but with my own twist. I love baggy and i love pants that fit perfectly. I want to get into boots, things out of my comfort zone a bit and maybe experiment so much more. Sadly I work in an environment that really isn't the best.. i can't express myself and i hate it but when i can i will definitely do my best to create something i love.
