I will go out on a ledge saying it might be harder being a hardcore drummer than a jazz drummer - keeping a solid beat on time and not losing focus is very hard - drummers lose patience and do fills or change it up because keeping a machine beat is hard without spacing out - and jazz drummers are ALMOST all fills and mixing it up - they couldn't play a four on the floor for 5 minutes let alone an hour with zero embellishment, especially not at 180bpm.
@vinylrichie007

Agree. I’m not sure most Jazz drummers could do Ringo’s shuffle beat on songs like Act Naturally or What Goes On. It sounds simple but very difficult to do.

Dude, have you ever noticed how Mommy Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight off Walk Among Us is off the same show as London Dungeon off Evilive? It's more obvious on the EP version, where you can here him finish the last word ("tonay-ay-ayght") of Mommy before going right into London Dungeon.

There's an interesting chapter in Miles Copeland's recent autobiography about Stan Ridgeway and Wall of Voodoo. I hadn't been aware of him/them before. From what I remember in the book, he sounds like a guy who wasn't that bothered about commercial success. Some jazz drummers who went onto play rock are Charlie Watts, Bill Bruford, John Densmore and Ginger Baker. Most of the Motown drummers were jazz drummers.

Just fantastic of course, every single one of them ❤️. Now, I remember from an earlier video that you had mentioned GBH's drummer drug addiction and it how ruined the band's live performance. And yeah, I guess at these speeds it doesn't really work if you re not (somewhat) sober, the whole "tightness" aspect of the performance gets a big hit. It's always super cool to hear stories from people that have actually seen these legendary bands live in their heyday. Perfect!

Great to see some love for 'Fear'. And yes, 'Let's Have a War' is, sadly a song for these times. Ten personal favorites from '82 (not a bad year): XTC: English Settlement FELT: Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty LAURIE ANDERSON: Big Science COCTEAU TWINS: Garlands PSYCHEDELIC FURS: Forever Now ROXY MUSIC: Avalon (an obvious choice, I guess) THE FALL: Hex Enduction Hour ABC: The Look of Love KATE BUSH: The Dreaming SIMPLE MINDS: New Gold Dream

I don’t think I’ve heard Felt. I need to dive into the Fall.
@onsenkuma1979

@@vinylrichie007 Felt's early records were heavily influenced by Velvet Underground (right down to avoiding cymbals like Moe Tucker). All of the Cherry Red albums are strong, especially the guitar work (vaguely like Johnny Marr). The Creation records stuff is more keyboard driven (Martin Duffy, who went on to join Primal Scream). For early Felt, 'Ignite The Seven Cannons' (1985) is maybe best known because of 'Primitive Painters' (w/ Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins). For later Felt 'Forever Breathes The Lonely Word' (1986) is maybe the strongest - it's one of my favourite albums of the '80s. The Fall is addictive. Like John Peel said: 'always the same, always different'. Cheers...

Rich, weird man, I’m just now getting to this video. I saw that Christian Death album at a record show this weekend. Of course I thought it was some heavy metal. Dealer was trying to sell it for $75 like it was a deal compared to online. I went outside and streamed it and heard like goth synth. I guess I was disappointed at first but really it reminded me of early ministry. Left it behind. Lol holy shit, agreed. You cannot play jazz drums on hardcore. It doesn’t work! Nice list for 82. Peace ✌🏼 Namaste 🙏 the Zonkman

Well good because my team needs a QB. I live (and grew up in) Knoxville TN. It’s a college town, home of the VOLS. Back in the day every kid who ever grew up here sold hotdogs in the stadium. Also we’re in between Nashville and Atlanta so most bands stopped here to play gigs(great venues here)…Anyways the Titans need a solid new QB if they want a future. Tanahill just ain’t cutting it. Good luck next season my friend.
