Great job Rich. Always thought for them that the 80s was the decade where they worked to broaden the tunes without losing the Ramones template. I remember seeing Devo live in Boston when they first broke and hearing Rock and Roll Radio when they used to play songs before the concert and thinking ok they are onto something here via the crazy man Spectors production. I’m all in on Pleasant Dreams and Subterrean Jungle which seemed to advance that template. Gabba Gabba great stuff-thank you!

The 80s albums vary from well produced pop songs to very heavy sounding songs. With the type of songs we were used to mixed in. I didn’t really go into it but there was a lot of conflict in the band in the 80s.

I've probably told this story before but I remember talking to a guy who went to a Nazareth show. Nazareth canceled but the Ramones were in town and got into Nazareth's spot. The entire audience bought beer just to throw at the Ramones. He was impressed that they finished their show. "Highest Trails Above" is the best song on "Subterranean" easily. Great record! "Brain Drain" is one of my favorite Ramones records. It's right up there with the self-titled and "Leave Home". I think "Acid Eaters" was only on vinyl in the UK originally. It was only released in the US on cd. It's one of those rock 'n' roll mysteries. How do you feel about "Adios Amigos"? Great show! Cheers!

I love all these albums Rich! Joey had one of the best voices ever for sure mate. Phil Spector realised his vocal talent and you can really tell on End Of The Century that he was giving room for his voice to shine. What A Wonderful World on the solo record is brilliant! Brain Drain is underated. Great records mate!

Gosh, I need to listen to more '80s Ramones albums. I grew up on my CD comp Ramones Mania, which is pretty career-spanning. I've had "End of the Century" for many years now and was really put off by the Ronettes cover so much that I didn't listen for a few years. But yeah, def love "Danny Says," it's kind of psychedelic and was written about Danny Fields, a pretty important figure for early punk bands. I recently got a really warped copy of "Pleasant Dreams" that has the error of having the same label on both sides, so it's always a surprise as to which side is actually going to get played. Thanks for your reviews. These Ramones albums are starting to get pretty pricy. I listened to "Halfway to Sanity" for the first time this year and really enjoyed it. I think that's a pretty influential album and is pretty consistent start to finish, which is really what I look for in an album.
@vinylrichie007Ай бұрын
@@giantorangerecords An eighties comp would be a great idea to get people interested in the 80s Ramones albums. As long as they leave the Ronettes cover off. That song had the same effect on me. Because of that song I convinced myself that half the album sucked. Thanks for leaving the comment.

excellent topic for a deep dive....thank you.....i've been seeing them since 1975 here in NYC You're spot on about End of the Century. It's totally understandable that the lads wanted to try for a hit and reach a wider audience but Spector's arrangements really work against the band's strengths. But they might have felt they had exhausted their genre changing punk style of playing with their first 4 albums. just like Bad Brains did with their first 3 hardcore albums (including Black Dots( before the awesome I Against I
