In 1978 the Saab 99 Turbo came onto the market, in which a fast-responding, small turbocharger was combined with a control valve (wastegate). The maximum output was only slightly increased, but the engine delivered a high torque at low revs. The Saab 99 Turbo was the first turbocharged production car that was not produced in small numbers as a sports device, but in large series.

I can't believe Visio did not put ANY Renault in his video. Louis Renault invented the turbo and made its first use on airplanes. By the 70s they revolutionised Formula 1 with their 1.5L V6 Turbo and because of that, THEIR ENTIRE line-up had a turbo engine as an option: R5 Alpine Turbo, R5 GT turbo, R9 and R11 Turbo, R18 Turbo, R21 2 L. Turbo, R25 V6 Turbo, Alpine V6 turbo, etc. Except for that and the Buick, great video man.

It was invented by a Swiss guy in 1905 on behalf of a Belgian company that produced diesel engines. He left out the entire Mitsubishi Turbo range of cars too and didn't even mention any turbo-diesel car. Nissan had turbo cars too as did Toyota.
@TheCabillaud947 жыл бұрын
Alain David true the turbocharger itself was invented by the Swiss guy, Louis Renault actually worked on the principle of forced induction but not its application using the exhaust. Yes he also forgot all the engines from the glory days of Japanese engineering : all those DOHC multivalve turbo engines were really some of the best performing engines in the 80s' to late 90s. Renault revealed the R5 Turbo at the 1978 Paris Auto Show

CaptHollister you don't seem smart. I'm first talking about the history of Renault and the turbo itself in racing. He didn't make a mistake on the Regal Turbo. The first generation Regal Turbos were released in late 77 as 78 models using Odd Fire 231's in a blow through carburetor configuration. @Ares-jx4ep7 жыл бұрын
I don't know what you mean by "concept car" in this case as I distinctly remember three 78" Turbo Regals running around my hometown. I wouldn't expect the SVO in this vid either. Remember in 79' the Fox chassis Mustang was the Indy Pace car and one of the engine options that year was a turbo 2.3. Also turbo 2.3's were optional in both the Mustang GT and Capri RS in the early 80's. The SVO was the ultimate Turbo Mustang with many unique features. The 86 SVO is one of my all time favorite cars.

It basically works like a transport truck box usually 3 or 4 speed with a overdrive for every gear making it into a 6 or 8 speed box the same can be found in many cars from that era and they even had a version of this transmission that went behind the steering wheel like a indicator pole ( that was called 3 on the tree back in the day)

I like your series a lot. It's entertaining and informative. I've seen Many cars that I never knew about and are now looking to expand my knowledge on working on them and to my collection. In regards to this vid and knowing that you're not from the USA, I'd like to add just a little more info for you about the Turbo Buicks & Olds. When you mentioned about the Olds, it originally was offered on the F-85 platform, a very basic model with few options unlike it's sister car, the Buick Skylark. Buick had the same-but-different 215 ci Turbo V8; which incidentally is the motor that Land Rover bought the rights to for their V8. The difference is that the Olds turbo motor had additional head studs for the increased compression of 10.5:1 vs the Buicks 9.5:1. They had issues with cooling and oiling and the fact they were expensive to maintain; at the time; was the nail in the coffin for them. They were originally meant for the economy class as a higher mpg model but they were built right as the muscle car wars were heating up. They would have been an awesome to that era if they were developed more but the cost and lack of knowledge that the backyard mechanic had access to to build them as a hi-perf engine was something they weren't going to invest in. All these cars in your video are the grandfathers to today's tuner craze. It's surprising how long it took for this to catch on in mainstream production. Keep up the good work on your vids.

I'd just like to correct you, The Grand national made more power and torque than you mentioned in the video especially in its last year of production in 1987 it was rated at 276 hp(206 kW)and 360 pound feet of torque(488 N·m), actual output is 300 hp/224 kW and 420 lb·ft/569N·m, the Grand national did however only make around the same power you mentioned in the video, an interesting fact though in that same year the Grand National(a suped up family car)was outrunning GM's top of the line sports car the Chevrolet Corvette and as a result GM discontinued it, they had simply outdone themselves with the Grand National, Great videos btw VisioRacer.

Oldsmobile is super obscure for the good things it pulled out of its ass and inspired. GM was extremely disrespectful killing it in the way they did. The achievements of Olds having made the first affordable mass produced car and automotive assembly line were Ford's inspiration for his assembly line and affordably mobilizing his fellow man. Also was the oldest living American Auto Manufacturer at the time they gutted it for quick cash.

@crashandburnbirner7 жыл бұрын
Tobirama Senju ok, the lever on the far left us the factory 3 speed gear shift, thwn you have a lever that shifts it into and out of 4x4, them the stick after that ingages 4low, and the fourth lever is an aftermarket overdrive tranny that bolts onto the back of the transfer case.
@jamesseidl36617 жыл бұрын
ok so I'm pretty sure this is whats up. from left to right 4 speed non overdrive transmission (np435 to be exact). next is the overdrive, I'm guessing it actually called a ranger overdrive it goes between the engine and transmission. he is using it with the 4 speed to split every gear effectively giving him an 8 speed transmission. the other two levers are the transfer case (I'm guessing its a np 205 with a twin stick conversion) one lever runs neutral high and low for the front axle and the other does the same for the rear

You forget that US carmakers had to contend with the world's toughest emissions regulations. They had to invent the technology that would allow engines to make good power while remaining clean. European automakers who were selling their cars in North America had to make their cars meet those emissions regulations and, frankly, they did a terrible job. Some of them were nearly undrivable and all of them lost a lot of horsepower in the process. GM should be commended for eventually figuring out the formula and developing the technology to make the gnx produce 270 bhp while meeting all emissions regulations and being a peach to drive everyday.

Ford had a version of the 2.3 turbocharged in about 1984 and sold a bunch of them. They were in thunderbirds and probably the Mercury version. I drove one of them but remembered all the turbo problems due to no oil going to the bearings when the engines were shut down and the turbos were spinning at 25K or so and the exhaust was well over 1000 F so I did not buy it. I knew a fellow who had a 62 olds with the 215 turbo and a four speed. It was amazingly fast but like all turbos its bearings cooked from not being oiled when the engine was shut down and they were still spinning for a long time.

3:55 The Regal shown here is not a '77 model; the platform on which the production Turbo-V6 was the downsized 1978 model. The V6 turbo also powered a LeSabre "Turbo Coupe". two-barrel or four-barrel carburetors were offered. The comment that "[t]he power was not particularly amazing..." is too kind. The horsepower rating for the two-barrel version was lower than the normally aspirated Buick 225 V6 from 1967. Voted this video down for the exceptionally bad robovoice, and the terrible noise that (I suppose) was supposed to pass for music at the end.

So I'm confused. Is that Ferrari 208 gtb a 2.0 V8 turbo? Or a 2.0 4 cylinder turbo. I heard 4 cylinder noises, but read ??liter flat 8?
