My background as a news and documentation videographer has allowed me to meet many political leaders here and abroad and the one thing that I noticed is the higher up the chain of command they are the better actors they are. Most of them only have a basic grasp of policy and the issues and they probably don't give a crap about you or me... cynical but that's been my experience. The idea behind the Death Star wasn't that stupid. The size of the galaxy is enormous and the Republic was so inefficient also because so many systems were represented there; the Senate was basically like a parliament with tens of thousands of members. The Republic was basically an UNO but Palpatine wanted to turn it into an unified state with one - his - vision. The Empire's militarization was massive and it was sucking the galaxy dry but it still wasn't enough. So either Palpatine would've to ponder the galaxy to follow him or control it through fear for which the Death Star was a good instrument. Palpatine's and Tarkin's mistake was to use it on a world like Alderaan. A better idea would've been to block rebels on some empty planet, prevent them from escaping, invite the media and then blast the planet to bits.
@blackshogun2726 жыл бұрын
You right. I really can't see why the Empire couldn't mass produce Interdictor-class Cruisers like the ones produced by the Star Forge (originally Forost Shipyards?). These things are comparable in firepower and defense when side by side a Victory-I class Star Destroyer. A few upgrades and stuff and *YEET* you have yourself over (high balling here) 60,000 Interdictor-class Cruisers !!! That's over twice the Imperial Star Destroyer count that the Empire had at its "peak" power ! Now imagine if they replaced all their light cruisers and dreadnaughts with those as well ? The Empire would've had well over 200,000 Cruisers dude. Now I'm not saying destroy all dreadnaughts because those ships are perfect siege and nightmare weapons. The psychological affect of a dreadnought's presence is unmatched in naval combat. Well, next to seeing an entire invasion fleet. But that's not the point. The point is to have humongous capital ships for every 100 or 300 cruisers so that your enemy knows: *"They're packing some serious heat in the back !"*

You missed the biggest and most obvious reason: The size of the galaxy to control. You can't control it all. Even attempting to will ultimately doom you. If a sector wants to break away that is not vital to your interests, let it. If an alien or human sector wants nothing to do with you, let it. Stick to core sectors, and you'll be fine. It's a common mistake really. Only control what you can, let everything else govern itself. Sure, a little chaos is going to be expected in the short term, but the long term benefit is stability. This does give a large chance of Jedi vanishing, but the Force prefers to be balanced, and that is a different mistake Palpatine seems to ignore. Imbalance breeds rebellion. Given the Force, it takes on a more physical form of rebellion. Normal Jedi, Sith, they don't get it, but they also balance one another out. This also gives a chance for Grey Jedi to emerge, and that is often the best road to travel. Nothing is black and white (which is coincidentally a logical fallacy as well). The Empire is just like the Republic. Controlling that much space is not possible at all.
@GenerationTech6 жыл бұрын
Sean Carroll so are you more in favor of a demilitarized federal peacekeeping force with more powerful regional and local defense?
@seancarroll98496 жыл бұрын
Ultimately, yes. Of course, this federal force should have the best fleet and equipment money can buy. *Never* let your tech stagnate. (I'm looking at you, regular TIE Fighter, and, ISD, don't think I forgot about you.) The federal level should only concern itself with threats the regional governments cannot control. Such as the Vong's eventual presence. The Empire forgot the most vital lesson, and they paid for it. The Pentastar Alignment is interesting in that they did learn this lesson. That was a relatively stable section of space. Not too big, not too small, with just the right amount of fleet power to maintain it. Their ethos was pretty moderate considering.

The grey Jedi are far worse then either of the Jedi or the sith, it's their nature. For one they are apathetic and solitary, for example every grey Jedi ever and the Bantu. Allowing for both the Jedi and sith to fight an eternal war, but does not reform either of them. Because it is in their nature, since they are neutral they do not perform any intervention. They know what is happening is bad and they want to change it, but they do not.
@ilovejettrooper59223 жыл бұрын
Allen, Palpatine had Anakin kill all the Jedi (younglings included) because he needed to have Anakin "burn his bridges". It's actually a tactics that cults use when indoctrinating a new member: "love bomb" them and/ or help them "resolve" an issue they're facing (Palpatine providing an alternate, and usually preferred, side of the boundaries and guidelines the Jedi told Anakin, whether *to* do or *not* do a thing), create cognitive dissonance in them and "encourage" them to do something that requires backwards rationalization, paving the way for their new "cult" identity to be nurtured ("It's not the Jedi way" after killing Dooku in Episode III is the best example I have at the moment) and then setting up a situation(s) that force them to choose irrevocably between one side or the other ("UNLIMITED POWER!!!!!" is an example, but the Clone Wars itself was the step by step parallel of this exact process). Everything after he sacrificed Mace's hand was Palpatine requiring Anakin to invest too much in the path he'd now chosen for him to consider turning back to the Jedi. Recommend looking through: ex-cult Resource Center - The BITE Model Influence Continuum - Freedom of Mind Resource Center and the book "How to combat cult mind control" if you want to know more.

I was never a fan of the notion that Palpatine saw the Vong coming and was trying to fight them. If that was the case, why keep it a secret? Tell everyone! It would discredit Palpatine's enemies for them to suddenly stand accused of weakening galactic solidarity at a time when it was needed most. I honestly think the whole theory that Palpatine was just doing what he did to fight the Vong to be nothing more than an attempt to clumsily insert complexity into a series that was built on the notions of moral absolutes (or pretty close anyway).

There were loyal officers and troopers, the big draw to the Empire/ Palp was peace, justice and order. These are not inherently bad, not to mention the majority of imperials came from the core, inner rim and were human. Meaning they were influenced by imperial propaganda. The Empire did bring order to a number of systems and did fight pirates and kept gangs and criminals in check. The only ones who suffered were Shipyard worlds, and alien worlds that were resource rich (meaning resources that could be used for shipyards.) If the world was more supportive they were generally treated better.

Great run down on some of the things that contributed to the fall of the Galactic Empire, basically it is many of the same things that affect contemporary as well as past totalitarian societies. I'd say corruption and nepotism was a big part of this too, which was also a flaw with the republic that didn't really go away with the formation of the Empire. If anything, the authoritarian nature of the Empire probably made it harder to stop because it was harder to challenge authority. As a parallel one can see how much trouble China has had stamping out corruption despite some high profile purges. I also love the fact that your contemporary political comparisons and commentary are far more nuanced and balanced then the polarised views coming from media, political commentators and talk shows, which are very selective in their reporting, go for cheap shot, are fairly superficial, or just plain wrong in the way they demonise sections of society. Being a Star Wars fame obviously teaches us so much and I very much look forward to some earth government realising they can put a giant space laser on the moon to bring peace to the solar system...assuming the space Nazis haven't already done so.

Basically shouting, "Big Threat Here." 4. Not as versatile. Mostly intended for close-quarters combat and cutting. 5. Limited resource of kyhber crystals. 6. Potentially dangerous to the user. 7. More flash than function. 8. About as useful as a fancy plasma-cutter in the hands of a non-Force user. 9. Due to its specialty in close-quarters, it's not a good weapon to charge into battle with. In WW2, Japanese officers would lead banzai charges while waving a samurai sword. US soldiers were trained to shoot the officer first, believing that the others won't follow. 10. Overall the lightsaber was more of a symbolic nature rather than a practical weapon of combat, especially in terms of ranged combat. As stated by Han, nothing beats a good blaster at your side.

#5 crystals could be synthesized so it is only a matter if getting production going. #6 applies to everything. #7 is always a good thing as military loves flashy gadgets.

9:41 Well, in the defense of the Empire, the reason they didn't use droids was because they became synonimous of the CIS during the Clone Wars and because CIS did horrible acts during the war, the citizents would be distrustful of the Empire for using the same automatons that the enemy used

What if palpatine took over and made an alliance between the republic and the CIS and turned it into an empire of half droid and half well trained storm troopers and the entire galaxy would be loyal and thankful to him

my take they should have proved a major alien threat was coming then explained the military and working together was necessary to defend the Galaxy then ask the Rebels to back down for the good of all as early as possible. And not blow up major planets.

I think with the whole not having a droid army thing, Palpatine was more fixated on influence over the galaxy. Non-life forms are only programmed to obey, yet if life forms obey you then you’d have gained more power/influence. Sure it’s more risky, but a valuable risk at that. Influence is more impactful when it isn’t programmed.

Generation Tech Don't know if you have done this yet, but have you thought about doing a video on this what if scenario? What if the CIS equipped hyperdrive engines to their fighters and used them in kamikaze attacks on Republic capital ships and facilities? I was thinking on the Last Jedi and the Holdo attack and potentially how effective it could be in an all droid fighter force.
@OllamhDrab6 жыл бұрын
I don't know what if any rationale that movie gave for it working in that situation, but obviously half of star wars stories wouldn't happen if everyone with a tramp freighter could build a *hyperdrive missile.*

The reason why the Empire didn't use battle droids is because... well the Separatist droid army. Palplatine had used the separatist threat to create a lot of fear in the galaxy. So it would sort of destroy his new Empire's image if they went to a complete droid army. (Though it could be argued clones were treated as droids/ slaves) The Palpatine also used the military to up spur a nationalism. The Imperial Navy and Stormtrooper core wasn't just made up some droids, but peoples sons and daughters. This, at least during the first years of the new order, brought a lot stability in a time when the Empire was at its weakest.

The main reason why the comparison between Star Wars and the real world does not work is: A Sith Lord needs to be fed by dark power. He needs people to live in fear, uncertainty, to be suspicious of each other, to fight each other. Stability and order may be what they speak of, but it is not the actual goal.
@omniscientbeing42246 жыл бұрын
as Kevin Smith pointed out in clerks the idea of contractors and civilians on board both death stars that perished. that undoubtedly would have caused countless defections. how about the view of human superiority taking precedence over competent leaders. or as you pointed out useless designs of ships, where intimidation was more important than utility or effectiveness, only to not use that fire power in the fight over Endor.
@omniscientbeing42246 жыл бұрын
here is a point against the rebels that I think many people over looked. as stated above, Kevin Smith wrote in an argument in clerks about contractors and civilians on the death stars, but leaves out how the rebels destroyed a space station that had countless political and wrongfully convicted prisoners onboard.

Another reason not mentioned was that Palpatine made himself commander in chief of his own military. He surrounded himself with a military high command staff who were terrified of him. This hampered military’s ability to command itself afraid they would second guessed by their own emperor. Sure you had some good officers like Tarkin and Thrawn but most were spineless cronies who just did what they told even when their emperor was making mistakes. Much like what happened with Adolf Hitler in WW2. And that was why the Galactic Empire failed, Palpatine was simply too tyrannical for his own good.
