In A New Hope the target exhaust port was described as being *right below the main port* indicating that it was one of the hundreds, or even thousands, of primary and secondary exhaust ports scattered across the station's structure. A station the size of the Death Star would logically need more than just two exhaust ports with the amount of waste heat it was likely generating simply from day to day operations, never mind firing the superlaser.

10 Flaws with Grand Moff Tarkin. In addition, besides the flaws of his doctrine, his destruction of Scarif base was all about eliminating a personal rival and not about the security of the Death Star plans. He destroyed a important facility, and the evidence of how the station had been sabotaged, it was left sitting in the transmission tower! (Along with Krenic, who had been told). An analysis of the data that had been sent would have revealed what the vulnerability was, instead of relying on the dubious success of recapturing the plans from the rebels so they can see what was so vital on them. Tarkin had compromised the investigation repeatedly by withholding intelligence from Krenic, to only revel it in public to embarrass him, instead of informing him of the issue sooner when he could have dealt with it more efficiently. So he even compromised the attempts to investigate espionage just to destroy another officer. Ersno could not have gimped the Death Star without Tarkins unwitting help, and the great disappointment in all this is the destruction of the Death Star was so quick that he probably didn't have time to realise how severely he had screwed himself.

One of my favorite quotes from Stargate SG1 is, “This is a weapon of terror,” in referance to the Goauld’s battle staves (which were inaccurate and ineffective) and, “This is a weapon of war,” in reference to the P90 submachine gun. This quote perfectly sums up the contrsting beliefs of Palpatine and Thrawn. Palpatine belived that the Death Star, star destroyers, and other ineffective weapons, needed to be as terrifying as possible to prevent rebellion (you saw how well that went). Thrawn, on the other hand, strongly opposed the Death Star because he knew how inferior it was to a large armada. In the end, Palpatine was a politician; not a Tactician; that is the true reason why the Empire fell.

You are forgetting about the artificial gravity. The same artificial gravity that easily prevents crews from being crushed by a ships acceleration, turning, and braking maneuvers. That way, no matter what the ship does, the crew can walk around just like they can on a stationary surface. Only unanticipated moves, like hits from outside objects or energy weapons, would be a problem.
@barrybend71896 жыл бұрын
@@oldtimefarmboy617 still think the outcome is the same as the hyperdrive is inactive during firing. Meaning the laser is sole thrust to that speed.
@oldtimefarmboy6176 жыл бұрын
The hyperdrive accelerates a ship to speeds far faster than light and then decelerates to far less than light when turned off. If you can create gravity then you can also manipulate it, as is shown in Star Wars by having different parts of a ship with different gravity strengths and in multiple directions. Since the ship's or Death Star's computer knows what is going to happen and when, it is a simple matter of creating a gravity field of the necessary strength and direction to negate the laser's effect.
@bigbowss98176 жыл бұрын
1. Death Star probably has thrusters to counteract the normal force from firing, just like all star destroyers. 2. Like it was said before, if the artificial gravity can handle hyperspace speed acceleration and deceleration, it can adjust to a 0.5c push back also...

@Joshua Tupper Yet Rogue One was one of the greatest Star Wars films ever, and probably the most coherent from a plot perspective, even fixing a major plot hole. The characters had thought out motivations and it has the greatest Vader scene ever. Yet the Rebel leads were a English woman, a Mexican male, two Asian men, a English Pakistani man, and a scary elderly Black man. The only white American was a robot. The SJW complaint is just an excuse for inadequate white males who are so delicate that the can't even stand the idea of a movie in which all the cast doesn't revolves around the greatness of a white male. And both new canon films included white males as the alpha good guys anyway, Han in The Force Awakens, and Luke in The Last Jedi. Has anyone considered that the new Disney canon is crap because it's crap, and it would still be crap if the casting of the good guys had been a pale sausage fest. Umm lets see. Instead of improving and advancing star destroyer design like any normal naval/space power...they build a gigantic station. Think about it, if the Imperials had Starfleet's (Trek) mentality for engineering & advancing technology, the Rebels wouldn't stand a chance, stagnating your military prowess for one weapon system is abhorently stupid. Imagine, the TIE fighter getting a snub fighter overhaul. Developing plasma based weapons (phasers) instead of lasers. Sheild rotation and integration, including advancing hyperdrive efficientcy (navi computer wise), eliminate the need for droids etc etc. The Imperial Fleet would be able to counter any threat and the Civil War would be a flash in the pan.

If I had to create an imperial military: 1. Gunships. Many, many gunships. Heavy cannons capable of blowing holes in Mon Calamari cruisers, and lots of PDCs. Being light and nimble makes them cheap and extremely destructive. 2. Missile cruisers loaded with particle annihilation missiles. Because destroying a whole fleet just takes too long most of the time. Like torpedos on a destroyer. 3. Carriers. Fighters take too long to deploy and there are too few of them: dedicated carriers could swarm the skies with space superiority. 4. Medium cruisers. Bigger guns than the gunships, but cheaper than battleships. 5. Battleships. Who needs PDCs: just have shields like a tank, similar armor, and fighters. Plus guns to blow a Mon Calamari cruiser back to where it came from. 6. Ground bombardment ships: vast craft designed to (at least) blow up cities, or (at most) planets. Only used when all enemies have been neutralised in space. Damn rebels will never see me coming.

Forgive me, but I must fanboy. There are no flaws with the X-Wing fighter. It was, without a doubt, the best and most versatile fighter ship ever created by Incom inc. It had almost the same top speed as the A-wing, but far better shields, it was more heavily armed than the A-wing as well. It was capable of hyperspace travel, (TIE's were not) It was nearly twice as fast as the Y-wing bomber, and also had Proton torpedoes, although did not have Ion cannons. It was designed as the "one ship for any use". It could intercept, and it could be used for bombing runs (Luke and the first DS) The A-wings and Y-wings were built for specific purposes. A's were Interceptors and Y's were heavy bombers. X's, could do it all. B-wings, were bombers. A more advanced, newer design than the old Clone War era Y-Wings.

The high energy plasma shockwave produced by destroying a planet like that would also devastate the inner solar system with the force of a minor nova. If Earth had been targeted it would have scoured the atmosphere from the inner planets, should they not be hidden behind the sun, which would also hiccup as it got blasted with dust. A Death Star minus the weapons does have uses as industrial centres and as artificial planets/Eucmenopolis, build one as a weapons, one as a Mobile fleet HQ/shipyard and crank out artificial habitats. The latter civilian uses would end up paying for the Death Star. The Death Star had no shields, only a few openings that were protected by energy fields, this was supposedly down to power requirements. I call BS on the excuse only done for plot purposes. A single Kardashev 2 civilisation could not only hammer the Empire as the equivalent of the UN entire going all out after a toddler, (yes, a single toddler) but could fund a Dearth Star via crowd funding, and it would not even have to be that poplar a cause to raise the funds. The fact is that build those artificial planet-Eucmenopolis could have not only created new markets but increased the available "worlds" to live on and strengthen the galactic economy. The "Super Mining Station" (Oooooh, a Death Star by any other name would smell as sweet?) could then rubble unwanted planetary bodies for extensive mining and construction work. People would have gotten used to such a machine being about and over time may have been able to clear new hyperspace corridors as a long term plan. Imaging the raging the rebels would have done against "the planet killer" that never killed planets anyone wanted and made new places for everyone to live and thrive. The Rebels would have attacked and looked like fanatical murderous lunatics no one could reason with. GAME OVER : Rebel Scum.

I agree; building something that large should have meant that planets are obsolete, since you should be able to fit at least 500 million people comfortably into something the size of the death star, if not more, and been a inspiration to build more and more of them. Hell, tourism alone to a mobile world like the death star would help offset the costs;god knows I'd gleefully spend YEARS exploring the nooks and crannies of just a small section of it. And if the death star had truly been meant to bring order, then it could have accomplished it just by EXISTING; a galaxy wide icon, saying " we are the empire; we can manufacture WORLDS.... can your civilization do that?!" And as a species wide icon for Humanity it would have unified; Humanity could look to it and think "we built that;what can't we do?" But the moment Tarkin fired it at a inhabited planet, much less one as revered by, essentially, EVERYONE, instead of being a symbol of accomplishment and pride, it showed the galaxy just how dangerous humanity was!

As per usual, the Legends lore explains more but even then it is quite odd! A book says that main architect, Lemelisk had to compromise due to lack of energy. Even with all of the hyper reactors in the Death Star, they couldn't fuel the Death Star's systems and an extensive shield system at the same time, leaving them with basic shielding. Book also oddly mentions that despite beeing kidnapped and enslaved, wookies were fascinated by the work and participated rather willingly because wookies love to tinker and usually doing 110% quality with their work. Odd. As for the defense fleet, it had one escorting it constantly during its construction which then apparently did not follow the Death Star when it was completed and went to Alderaan and Yavin. Funny cause together with the Star Destroyers, the Death Star could spew out around 1000 TIE fighters to defend it. That would've essentially doom the Yavin defenders. Barely 30 fighter vs 1000. Bye bye Rebellion! In fact, some of the Death Star's flaws are the flaws of Imperial Leadership and Tarkin overestimating the station. If Tarkin would've been as caotious as before the construction of Death Star, most defense flaws could've been forgotten about. He decided that TIE fighters do not join the defense. And he decided to blow up Alderaan even without the consent of Palpatine!

Another great video as always! But consider this...... the Death Star is not a good military weapon for all the reasons you mentioned. It's a great political weapon from a Sith Lord's point of view. The one who controls the Death Star controls the military who is now the only real threat to Darth Sidious, a sith lord who understood Darth Bane's rule of two. In this case the rule can be distilled down to "watch your underlings (military)" and Vader. Without the Death Star, the military group that controlled the most start destroyers would assume power, a simple numbers gambit. But with the Death Star dominating over the galaxy, any ambitions by any military rivals would be squashed.

The shield issue with the Death Star in the Disney-verse has always been sort of a rect con. Basically I was always under the assumption that the ship didn't use shields for one of two reasons: it was too big to house its own shield generator (so maybe only smaller areas like the docking ring were shielded) or two it couldn't power the shield and its own weapon at the same time which makes since given the power consumption of the super weapon, and the fact that in Jedi they built a completely separate shield on the planet Also, their is the fact that the Empire was full of themselves and probably thought the weapons was impervious to any threat, so, there's that. One thing though, I think the Death Star did have "a fleet." Remember, Darth Vader's own Destroyer is docked at the station prior to the battle. I'm not sure what the secondary media states, but in the movies, there is no indication that it leaves. Maybe the fleet is kept docked on the station for transit and is only suppose to be scrambled if a credible threat (such as an opposing enemy fleet) is spotted. However, as we saw, they didn't consider the fighters a threat at first, so they never say to scramble the fleet.

Great video Allen, as always and your humor, sometimes i have to pause and think if you are really serious lol. Anyways i'd like to ask you something for a while now, please pay attention to the way you talk, sometimes you talk with your "mouth shut" and it is a bit hard to keep track to what your saying sometimes. About the video itself, most of it is answered by the Tarkin Doctrine as you pointed out. Indeed Tarkin underestimated the Rebels and citizens across the galaxy when he ordered the destruction of Alderaan, if you ask me i don't believe that even Palpatine had gave his permission for such thing, at least so early on. Don't like Starlkiller Base being built on a planet, i prefer the Death Star with. The only true major design flaw was the thermal exhaust port and imperial arrogance.
@calebdonaldson87705 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with your ethics and economics logic. The CIS, Trade Federation, and Banking Clan all had immense power and influence over the galaxy whilst not being entirely evil and using resources effectively. Honestly, the Empire didn't need a Death Star when there were things like planetary shields, Lucrehulk Battle Stations, and seismic tanks to do the job without destroying planets, such as how the Separatists controlled Ukio. Need super cheap and stupidly abundant forces? Answer: droid armies. Need a star destroyer capable of battling entire fleets? Answer: the Malevolence did a far better job! Need unstoppable land forces? Answer: CIS Super Tanks were incredible. Need a planet destroying weapon? Answer: Sun Crusher or Devastator, take your pick!

I have only just started watching videos on this channel a couple weeks ago. Each video is unique and enjoyable, I personally have enjoyed your alternate endings and story arcs on the prequel trilogy. That being said I would like to see you do a video on an order 66 or other related topic that focuses more on the clones. The clones still had emotions and independent thought which I believe would have created conflict internally for them like it would for any human being. For clones such as Bly, Rex and Gree we are told that they were constantly conflicted with the order to the point Rex removed it and deserted. In an alternate story where say Anakin kills Palpatine before the order is executed but then when the Jedi are named traitors by a Chancellor Skywalker and must flee. The the clones are commanded to hunt down the Jedi without the execution of order 66 they are not forced to kill them. This would cause a conflict not only between these brothers in arms but internally also. You see clone leaders such as Bly, Gree, Rex and even maybe entire battalions such as the 104th "Wolfpack" who had a close bonds with the Jedi such as Plo Koon. As a result they would began to choose sides. Some choose the Jedi while others such as perhaps Cody would remain loyal to the Republic whom they were raised to serve. As a result later on you have a sizeable clone force personally protecting Padmé, her children and the last Jedi. This is just an idea of course because I have always loved the clone characters developed in the Clone Wars series which makes it hard to watch Revenge of the Sith. I know as a soldier your comrades can quickly become your family on the battlefield especially if you are a tight knit unit.

Main reason for death star was to concentrate emperor's power and create powerful deterrent/fear factor. It was mainly political move, kind of like dome uselessy grand projects made by corrupt countries. This is also reason for it's size, it's so emperor has more control over his subjects.

There is a book that was put out in the early to mid 90's (can't remember the title) in where Kipp Duran, one of Luke Skywalker's students, was fleeing from Kestle station and flew in to the Maw, a black hole cluster. Inside the Maw he found the prototype to the Death Star, although still just the skeleton of the station. Most the scientists and engineers inside the Maw stations was told that they was designing a new asteroid mining facility. The super laser on the station they was told was to be used to break up larger asteroids and uninhabited planets to make mining easier. Part of the reason for the size of the Death Star that the engineers was told was to house all the mining equipment and have the ability to bring in the smaller chunks is asteroids into the station for processing.

I once tried to write an article for Cracked about this very subject. I had some similar points. First, it's too big. I calculated that to get from the hanger bay to the Bridge, would require someone to travel at 700 miles per hour for a full 15 minutes. The cost. To build would cost the Earth equivalent of 15 septillion dollars. The effects of destroying a planet, while being anywhere near it. ; Not only would blowing up a planet cause a gravity well, that would likely crush the DS, but the debris and chunks of planet would be propelled in all directions into the vacuum of space. This would almost certainly destroy the battlestation. You can't just go anywhere with it: The DS was a mobile station. It had a hyperdrive and would have used the same routes as any other hyperspace-capable ship. Something the size of the DS traveling in the same hyperspace "lanes" would almost certainly come out of hyperspace into "traffic". Imagine a 747 traveling down a 2-lane country road, and you get the idea.

In addition to my earlier point, in Trek the Borg do not have any sort of traditional shields but an electro magnetic field which renders particle weapons and projectiles useless but during the raid on the Cube to save Captain Picard in Best of Both Worlds Part 2, Data & Worf pass through the field in a shuttlecraft allowing them to rescue Picard. The Death Star probably has the same thing because a shield takes a ton of power to produce and mantain so to conserve energy for the laser, a magnetic field can be used for the same purposes. Hence in Ep 4 the X-Wings get to the Death Star easily unlike DS2. A force feild in its simplest form is a static discharge field and if you happen to know its frequency you can pass through. Who's to say the plans didn't have the shield frequency of the DS, once the X-Wings fired up their foward shields and adjusted their frequency....they can then pass through

Please do the 10 flaws with AT-AT next. Designed to be a frontline heavy assault vehicle and a troop transport, it actually performs both roles very poorly. The AT-M6 is actually a big improvement since it can also perform artillery fire support with its big gun and the sturdier gorilla-like legs made it harder to topple over. Hope you are getting some rest now and then Allen, you're doing the heavy lifting for both channels here. I didn't see very much of American and British Ben nowadays, I wonder what they've been up to.

Planet shield only cost like 7 million credits where isf is 150 and death star is what 10 trillion. Yes you don't need a ship 5 times the size of the weapon but you need something bigger to house all the defences or a huge fleet that's only to protect it and actually a hindrance in aiming

The Death Star was a symbol of Palpatine's might, and the Empire's capacity to respond to threats with overwhelming might, with the intention of scaring the populace into not standing up against the order. This "Peace" would give Palpatine the freedom he needed to more deeply study and learn about the power of the Dark Side, which he believed could allow him to live (and rule) forever. Unfortunately for Palpatine, the Rebels responded to the Battle Station's first true test by destroying it.

A more practical application of the superlaser than planet-busting was something showcased by the Death Star II at Endor: one-shotting capital ships at long range (ideally outside the range of enemy turbolasers). This is what the superlasers fitted to legends-continuity vessels like the Eclipse and Sovereign class dreadnoughts were for. That said, both of those ships, while more mobile than the Death Stars and not quite as vulnerable, were still incredibly cumbersome, overcomplicated weapons. The ideal platform for a superlaser would be a much smaller, more specialized ship dedicated solely to the main weapon with minimal extraneous functions (more or less the concept behind the Darksaber...only without the corner-cutting on parts). Provided such a vessel has a proper support fleet of picket ships and a fighter screen, one or two vessels of this sort could be incredibly effective. As for an escort fleet...well, in legends the Death Star I DID have a very small picket fleet, consisting of a Nebulon-B frigate (notable for being an extremely potent picket ship against starfighters), two corvettes, two cruisers, and two Victory-II Star Destroyers. Granted, this is a pitifully small compliment for something as large and strategically important as the Death Star, but it's better than nothing (which is what was present according to Disney canon). The Death Star II had a much better escort compliment consisting of the entirety of Death Squadron, but the lack of effective point-defense on the ships making up the battle group in question somewhat limited their capabilities, and the breakdown of their communications network due to the destruction of the Allegiance-class battlecruiser "Pride of Tarlandia" (functioning as the battle group's comms vessel) only made things worse. That said, even with this deficiency the Empire came incredibly close to crushing the Rebellion once and for all, with a combination of the Emperor's hubris and, of course, plot armor doing them in.

5:10 the old Legend novel Death Star explained Shielding: As it was said by the Chief Architect the Death Star is still limited by Physics and maximum energy output. So we can either dump all the energy in one deflector shield and no Super Laser or as it was done, rudimentary shielding (mostly localised) and all power to the big wanking gun. Those rudimentary shields would protect docking bays, certain exhaust ports and the Emperor's spire on the north pole, it was never designed to repulse snub fighters or even cruisers letting rip with torpedoes
@Kareszkoma6 жыл бұрын
I think they just didn't have more money. Even with the biggest and best hyperdrive, it still took weeks to get to places with the Deathstar. Feeding the crew of a smaller moon, which generates 0 profit is also a huge hit. A Mon Calamar Cruiser has I think 20-40 smaller shields. Because shields are very expensive. Now shielding a planet.. I don't know. They supposedly did it.

@ukmediawarrior6 жыл бұрын
When you really think about it the Death Star really didn't need a fleet. It was so big that even if an enemy fleet arrived and tried to attack it, and even if they somehow got their turbo laser blasts past the ray shields (which I think was what the x-wings fly through at the battle of Yavin), they might chew up some of the surface, but that's about it, the DS was just TO big for a fleet to do any real significant damage before being taken out itself by the DS's own turbo lasers. As for starfighter protection, the DS had hundreds of TIE fighters (although due to budgetary reasons we don't see them in A New Hope) which would be more than enough to take care of any enemy fighters near the station. If it hadn't been for that pesky exhaust port it would have been invulnerable to any attack from outside. Only an attack from inside, sabotaging the reactor for example, would have taken it down.
