Actually that's because the German Airforce tried making it an All role Fighter. It's a High Altitude Interceptor only for a reason. It doesn't have the manoveurability to properly fight in low altitude as it relies on speed, which means it is very easy to slam into things.

I think it's funny that the "Anti-Theft Mechanism" is like the old TIE Fighter toy's detachable wings.
@paulcoddington664
@paulcoddington664 6 жыл бұрын
I think that might be a deliberate in-joke. In Star Wars Rebels, the TIE Fighter hexagonal fins are the wrong size in relation to the rest of the vehicle. But the dimensions used precisely mimics that of the old TIE Fighter Kenner action figure toy of which you speak, which was notorious in its day for having botched the dimensions. This stood out more at the time because in the early years of Star Wars fandom, the TIE Fighter was elusive and mysterious. There were no scale model kits or blueprints of it, the Kenner action figure toy was all there was. The only TIE Fighter kits released during the original trilogy years through to the mid-late 1990's were the Darth Vader variant and the Interceptor variant. So, the Kenner toy was the only opportunity to have a model of a TIE Fighter and it was wrong (and therefore not worth buying to use as a model rather than a toy). In the original film, you rarely got a good clear look at one, let alone saw one clearly from multiple angles. There were very few photographs of them available in books and magazines at the time, and those few pictures were all from the front and not the rear. I remember trying to blueprint it from memory while visiting the theatre weekly during the original run of Star Wars. Until Empire Strikes Back, I wasn't even sure what one looked like from behind (and even then, the impression was vague and lacking fine detail). No home video to pause back then (not that would have helped much before the invention of UHD TV and BD). I settled for drawing blueprints (I wish I still had those, they were surprisingly close to the mark considering the conditions under which they were created), my cousin built his best guess at what they looked like out of paper (he could build models out of sheet paper that looked as detailed as plastic kits - he even did a Millennium Falcon in sheet paper that rivalled the original filming model for size and detail). So, when I see Star Wars Rebels, I am reminded of how disappointing the Kenner TIE Fighter was and feel a cringe because of that history. I would rather they had not done it that way, but used the correct dimensions instead.

I don't think that the TIE Fighter would go into uncontrollable spins and rip itself apart in atmospheric conditions. I think the bigger issue with its aerodynamic design would be that it couldn't go roll if its life depended on it. I think this was something that was brought up quite frequently in the old Legends books and that Rebel pilots took advantage of quite often. I do believe that dogfights with skilled TIE Interceptor pilots in atmosphere was highly discouraged for most pilots.

Tie fighters are so cool to look at but i think you could have made this list 20 long and still been able to keep going. Standard Tie fighters should have been phased out and replaced with the Tie Advance then equipped with at proton launcher or ion cannon. I think this is my favorite of the series so far. Now lets hear Tarkin doctrine's flaws
@Steve_Hickman
@Steve_Hickman 6 жыл бұрын
One of the main reasons as to why the Advanced wasn't used to phase out the TIE Fighter, was because the Interceptor was already doing that before Return of the Jedi. That being said, the reasoning behind why the Advanced didn't become the primary fighter of the Empire, which was on many levels more capable than anything they had before the Defender, was cost. Palpatine saw those who served him as expendable, which is why the TIE series was made on the cheap, with no hyperdrive or shields, so they could be easy to mass produce and even easier to replace.

I think the Empire should've scrapped the idea of the Death Star and dreadnoughts altogether, and instead used the credits they'd save on better starfighters. After all, if their goal was peacekeeping, not building a Death Star would prevent a lot of people from getting angry, and using those saved credits on better starfighters would deter small rebellions and pirates in the first place. After all, the Rebellion used Starfighters very heavily. If the Empire had stopped with the massive capital ships and super-weapons, and instead made better starfighters, they would have had the upper hand in the Galactic Civil War. Instead, they put massive amounts of resources, manpower, and credits into large, easily destroyed projects. Pitiful. The Tarkin doctrine can only go so far. Projecting fear to deter an enemy isn't as effective as showing an enemy *why* they should fear.

Great analysis on the TIE fighter! I have a few ideas regarding flaws and how to fix them, namely: * Give them one proton torpedo or missile launcher; * Give them the pilot/gunner configuration of the TIE/sf that the First Order uses (come on, they had a similar configuration to both the Y-wing and ARC-170, shouldn't be that hard to add to a TIE back in the Imperial era); * Give them quick-detach hyperdrive rings like the Eta-2 Actis did, and you'd have a much more effective fighter if you ask me ;)

About the Zero. It was designed the way it was because they were trying to meet the tough requirements the military had placed. To give it the range and speed required they gave up all defensive measures and even some controls such as it had no hydralic control surfaces so it was all on the pilot's strength.

How would I fix/replace the tie fighter? Well for a start the ties have to be cheep, expendable and manuverable. It also has to be able to counter enemy bombers. B-wings and Y-wings. Any fighter that can not threaten a capitol ship is not a threat at all. Any thing built in the Ties place has to be able to meet these requirements. 1) Re-align the wings. The Tie striker got the right of it. 2) DROID FIGHTER. This is the single biggest thing I would do to fix the Tie and its glaring weaknesses. Strip out the cockpit and slap in a slimed down armored compartment with a droid brain in it. Give it a wireless swarm AI so all of the fighters in the squadron can comunicate to swarm and overwhealm their opponent. Give it a Black box recording device and upload its mission logs after every engagement. Mash all this data up in a huristic learning computer and use it to program and patch your fighters droid brain. That way ever single one of them has thousands of engagements worth of experience to work from. 3) So you dont want to go with shields? fine. Make as many of the components modular and easy to replace in the feild. That way they are easily built, repaired, servaced and upgraded. Take some of the weight you saved from not having a pilot and slather on ablative armor on your critical systems. 4) Give the fighter cameras that allow the ship to see in all directions 5) Fire power. Mount the two guns on a chin turret. This way its better at straffing as well as keeping a beed on your target whilst you bob and weave. You can also use it to fire behind you. Make better use of the guns you already have. 6)Maor firepower. Give it a target designator so it can call in missile strikes and turbo laser barrages. That way it gets more firepower and your bombers can stand off at long range without putting themselves at risk. 7) No hyperdrive? no problem. Mount the fighter to the outside of capitol ships so you carry leads more of them and can launch them faster (see Vulture droid). Give them a hyperspace beacon launcher so you can track those escaping rebel ships back to their bases and Smash Them ALLL!!!!!!!!!!!

Also sensors can locate anything around the fighter, when cameras easily have blind spots, even if you spam them everywere on the ship.
@antonymash9586
@antonymash9586 6 жыл бұрын
@Ruy Sometimes there is just too much jamming and counter jamming to rely on sensors. You would want optical sensors (cameras) to compensate for this. Small hardened photo receptors like the ones on droidekas would do for the most part; particualy if you make them fish eye panoramic sensors that can see in infra red. These give you your 360 vision for your close knife fights. You then pair that up with a gun sight camera and laser range finder on your turret. At distance vision can be done with one or two forward facing telescopic cameras. By networking the droids together you can make it so they can cover for each others blind spots. @TNSN The Droid Tie was a step in the right direction. However it cos made it viable as a swarm fighter only when paired with the Word Devistators. I also feel that it did not do enough to adress some of what I see as the fundemental flaws of the Tie series.

Hey guys, I had a thought. So the wings create a huge sensor profile for enemy ships right? What if that is intended? Consider this: The Imperial navy relied on large ships over small fighters to win the day. The fighters acted as a screen against other small fighters from getting to the big ships. Having a large sensor profile could be beneficial in a few ways for the general military strategy of this kind of combat. 1) Psychological warfare - Picture it: You're in a rebel cruiser with a few x-wings and maybe a pair of a-wings on board for fighter defense. Suddenly a Star Destroyer comes out of hyperspace in front of you and starts throwing wave after wave of tie fighters. You look at your scanner filling with obscene amouts of contact blips. That's enough to rattle anyone. 2) False Holes - If you position your tie fighters right, you could fake weaknesses in your defensive line. Trick an enemy ship into moving into broadside range. Quoth the Sun Tzu; "War is deception". 3) Better them than us - Maybe so many sensor profiles would confuse a seeker torpedo. Better some coffin jockey take the hit than the Star Destroyer.

Some very good points raised by the video. The TIE Interceptor was introduced as a replacement for the Ln, but still suffered from many issues listed here. The advantages of speed, maneuverability, a better built frame and most versions having four lasers instead of two were huge gains, but it was still a fragile fighter craft that had an even worse viewport obscuring because of the inward pointed shape of the wings. In response the TIE Defender and TIE Hunter were effective ships that addressed nearly all of the issues of their predecessors but at the disadvantages of being costly to produce and being made later into the war when the Rebellion was becoming more and more threatening. Their small number of craft ultimately did make a difference but were much too late to the field and there just weren't enough of them.

The simplest answer to why they put so much time and energy into finding skilled pilots was that the emperor understood that if he could find the best pilots and indoctrinate them it was less likely they would become useful to his enemies.

I will point out that ECM can make lasers ver off course, it's one reason they do end up fight so close, the standard laser cannons used by TIE Fighters have a range of around 20 miles. The were constantly updated and the 7.2 and more powerful exist and can kill cap ships. The sensors used on both sides fighters are 3d 360 tachyons, ftl electroscopes that see in all spectrums and can see energy emissions. They have energy detectors, radiation, gravity, life form and personal identification systems, and some carry laser targeting and doppler radar. I feel the cockpit is a neutral issue as it also prevents a pilot from being easily killed, pilots in real life are trained to aim for the pilot seat in dogfights, and believe it or not, the hull is just as strong as the X-Wings hull. They also can see through the hull with there helmet mounted displays as long as ecm doesn't interfere with it. It wasn't the design that held back the TIE Fighter at Yavin, TIEs are pretty much equal to the X-Wing overall. At Yavin only 9 TIEs fought the 30 plus Rebel fighters, 2-3 TIEs survived Yavin, one Y-Wing survived, one Arrow Head Survived, and 3 X-Wings. The KDR was way higher for the Enpire, what caused them to lose was Tarken as the Death Star has way more than 9 TIE Fighters that they could have used.

TIEs were more than a match for the X-wing in 1v1...*cant die if u dont get hit* mentality a TIE can run circles around an X-wing the X-wing had armament and durability over all normal TIE fighters but a TIE/In with shields becomes a much much harder fight as its heavier lazer cannons(same used on the defender) can rip through the rebels craft. As seen when skerris rekt the X wings and the bit about a hyperdrive...hows it gonna help if the targets not tracked??? If they were used for hit n run tatics sure but you need to know the target area in the first place to risk it sending fighter there.

hey generation tech, I made my own fighter. The f 54 air/space superiority fighter, produced by a faction I made. The f 54 is based off of the modern f 35 and made out of a nanotech moded plasteel composite, allowing it to effectively block things up to small flak without shielding. With a mk 3 heavy shield generator it can successfully take dozens of octuple turbo laser hits without much damage. it's maneuverability is much better than a tie. max speed is 1,200 mph, turn speed at 600 mph. No big panels on the sides. It has a type 0 warpdrive allowing for cross galaxy travel in hours. Main armament are 4 c-96 laser canons. capable of destroying a shielded fighter in 2 shots. Secondary armament are 12 aksis fire and forget missiles. common tactic with these are to fire 8 at fighters and the rest at capital ships. Thanks to replication tech, it can be produced very fast, efficiently and with almost no cost. to anyone reading this, if you have questions, I am willing to answer them when I can.

That was my main issue with Star Wars, when it came to the Empire's military, they never made any adjustments, I mean for almost twenty years the main ships the dealt with were fighter to falcon size freighters, and yet their fleet equipped to deal with every ship but fighters and falcon sized freighters. If nothing else after the destruction of the first death star you would expect to find a massive retrofitting of point defense weapons onto SDs, but nope, nothing. As I said in theSD flaw video, this would have been like following the attack on Pearl Harbor the USA decommissioning it's aircraft carriers and instead building an even larger battleship fleet, made of of even larger, slower battleships, but stripped of the AA guns to allow more large anti-capital ship weaponry and sending them out to battle the Japanese fleet of carrier task forces.

1. Two highly exposed bridges. 2. Large hangar bay doors were required to open so that fighters could be launched effectively, making the ship extremely vulnerable. 3. The ship was extremely underarmed, especially for what the ship was used for, having to go up against ship that were armed with almost 5x as much cannons. 4. Venators carried ships which were equipped with hyperdrives, making the ship useless as a carrier for the most part. 5. The ship was most of the time crewed by clones, they handled menial duties such as maintenance, making an expensive crew. 6. The amount of ships carried by a Venator were was almost always outnumbered by CIS starfighters, which were also much faster and cheaper.

Correction on the sidewinder fact in the beginning, most AIM-9 Sidewinder variants use passive-infrared sensors to detect the targeted aircraft, infrared passes through fog, clouds and such and is not influenced by darkness meaning that they can in fact be used without visibility. Now one might think that the hostile aircraft couldn't be targeted in the first place, though targeting works via multiple different systems, which determine identity, location, speed and such without needing any visibility at all. Though I agree on his point anyway, that in a dogfight visibility is quite necessary. And yes I am fun at parties, just wanted to share some knowledge for those who want it.

A couple points: 1: It is entirely possible, given the level of technology, that TIE fighter pilots had in helmet HUDs. They wouldn't need to see out, as the helmet could display all the info they need. IE: the TIE pilot looks to the right at his bulkhead, and sees targets and ships, not the bulkhead, thanks to his advamced HUD. We are doing it now with fighter helmets. 2/3: The Empire is about absolute control. I would see this extending to their pilots. What better way to ensure your pilots stay loyal, then to make them dependant on the ship for long range travel, and survival? The ship dies, you die. You stray to far, you die. This prevents deserters, and ensures the maximum combat effort on the parts of the pilots. 4: the TIE in atmosphere. Given the shape, while not ideal, so long as you continue forward, it wouldn't cause to much issue, given the level of anti-grav, repulser, and inertial damper tech. The forward facing profile is actually fairly sleek. The panels are large, and would cause some drag, but I believe it could fly in atmosphere, just not to the speed it can achieve in space. 5: Sensor profile: seeing as the TIE fighters are short range interceptors, their sensor images would be dwarfed by the capitol ships they are near, so being seen, or not, is not an issue by this point. This could also be advantageous, seeing as they are so near their own ships. Combine a large sensor readout, with an IFF signal, and the Empire's capital ships could, in theory, easily miss their own ships. A sort of electronic interrupter gear, if you will. On a side note, this very sensor readout could, potentially, be used against the enemy. A swarm of TIE fighters, clustered close together, could appear to be a lone, much larger, ship. There was a mission in Vietnam to use a nearly identical tactic, switching F-105 Thunderchiefs, for F-4 Phantoms. 6: lack of shielding. While shielding is good, it also increases weight and cost. A much cheaper, but equal alternative, is armour. Now, I know the TIE fighter lacks armour, however, minimal amounts, to protect against debris, is easily done. Our own space fairing vessels are well protected against debris now. Is it such a jump to assume the Empire has developed a light weight, cheap alloy to prevent micro meteoriods from penetrating the compartment in flight? 7: armourment: Giving the TIE fighters simple laser cannons, beyond the cost, ensures a couple things: 1: they cannot damage Rebel capitol ships, but can remove point defense cannons, leaving, potentially, a crew to interrogate. 2: the weapons cannot be turned on the Empire's own capitol ships. If a TIE fighter is captured, the Rebels (or defectors), cannot turn around, and use it against the Empire effectively, where as the X-Wing, if captured by the Empire, could be sent out in a mission, the crews undercover as Rebels, to eliminate a Rebel fleet. This would sow discontent within the Rebel Alliance, and lead to strained relations. I think this covers everything. Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed! As always, the video was great, but I thought it would be fun to make a counter point list.

I think that a MAJOR flaw is the lack of life-support systems, meaning that you die of suffocation if your suit malfunctions or you are left stranded on space by your mothership. However, the T-65 X Wing open helmet is also a FLAW, because any breach on the cockpit can kill you very quick. That is the reason why Gundam pilots use Normal Suits. Except Char, but everybody in-universe thinks that he is insanely badass for THAT.

TIEs are just perfect for their purpose, cheap, efficient, fast. The issue is the lack of imperial support ships. ISDs are not able to protect a TIE squadron against mid sized ships. There are flaws with the ARC - 170: 1. It has a large crew. You need a lot of man power. Also you crew needs internal cooperation, which causes delay, that could be the diffrence between life or death. 2. It has large profile, making it an easy target for star fighters. Also it takes a lot of space in a hangar.

There is one thing about the Tie Fighter everyone seems to forget: they need sunlight. You wouldn't be able to fly in the shade, at least not for long. For example the trench run on the death star in Episode IV. Based on the size of the Tie Fighter each solar panel has a maximum size of 50m². Depending on the distance to the sun you only get a few kW of power, on earth for example you get 1kW per m². This is not much and it assumes that the panel is always facing the sun. Given that Star Wars plays in the same universe and is subject to the same physical laws as we do, it would not be possible to build a working Tie Fighter even with advanced technology. It just looks cool and the sound is great

As true as a lack of hyperdrive being a flaw is true, the difficulty in following a ship through hyperdrive means that outside there being major faults in the target you can't really expect to catch them after that point. Truthfully I don't think a lack of hyperdrive would of been too critical a failing if certain conditions were met. 1. The fleet acting must have enough reserve capacity that if a single carrying ship (ie star destroyer) is lost other ships in the fleet can recover all fighters (or just recover pilots since Ties are cheap) 2. You need a second type of fighter equipped to handle the long range missions. In canon the tie advanced or the tie defender could do this and at least in legends the defender also carried missiles 3. As a result of the first point star destroyers should not act alone

“Cosmetic” “I’m not a rocket surgeon” Real talk, I agree with you on most of your points, excluding the ‘explosives’ in the wings, b/c the depiction of scuttling the TIEs makes the anti-theft device look like some form of electromagnetic energy discharge. If the physics of the Star Wars universe are analogous to our own, then a local high-amperage EM discharge at the wing attachment points could definitely convert the durasteel(idk exactly what the metal the use for the TIE fighters is called) to plasma, which would produce the (to the naked eye) cleanly sheared sections

The side with the resources of the entire galaxy has cheap, disposable equipment that doesn't work for its designed purpose. i cant believe i say this but you are wrong in nearly evry way... the ONLY REAL FLAW is the lack of deflector shields... evrything else you have mentioned doesnt support its purpose and just costs billions of credits the empire could use for important things... the imperial navy isnt built for battleing a "real" war against some big faction that actually can deploy a fleet like the rebel alliance.... it is to show presence, fighting pirates and do peace keeping missions and for all that an star destroyer and it's 72 TIE's is more than enough, not to say overkill... the TIE isnt supposed to be better in 1vs1, its supposed to easy overwhelm the few pirate fighters and evrything bigger than fiighters will be handled by the star destroyer itself! doesnt need better armament -> star destroyer support doesnt need hyperdrive -> SD transport doesnt need life support -> suits(better pilot protection in case of dmg) doesnt need rear view -> sensors/71 wingmen/ and im sure they got some kind of target lock alarm... only flaw as said in my opinion fot its purpose.... deflector shields...
@PlutoProtogen
@PlutoProtogen 6 жыл бұрын
but i mean its litterally deployed to fight agianst enemy fighters which are still better equipped than them...you want good armorment, hyperdrive would allow better range for better engagements, life support is key to surviving, and even in todays most modern fighters, rear view is still a thing and they are taught to not only rely on radar and such but also to rely on their own two eyes...hes right about the star destoyer support though, they would be better off having their own guns with fighters out at a longer range similar to how it works in real life and has for the past 100 or so years

TIEs are fielded by capital ships and large space installations, resources that usually carry long range weapons. TIEs can get by with short range weapons for close, accurate shots. TIE Bombers could conceivably carry long range weapons if needed. Also for lack of defensive shielding, please refer to the sentry TIEs attacking the Falcon in ANH, they do show signs of laser hits on shielding, just as we see when hits are scored on the Falcon itself. Either these are the only TIEs in the galaxy so equipped or SHIELDLESS TIES ARE REBEL PROPAGANDA!!! TIEs may have lesser shielding when compared to more expensive and wasteful ships but they do have deflector shielding of some kind.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised by some of his reasoning too. Suggesting to slap a Proton Torpedo launcher on a TIE fighter is kinda like equipping a standard infantry soldier with an AGM65 Maverick missile - I'm sure said soldier is gladly going to use a weapon that is 2.5 m in length and weighs 300 kg even without its launching and targeting system...
@Hektols
@Hektols 5 жыл бұрын
Many of those flaws are made on purpose, the lack of hiperdrive and autonomy make them completely dependent on their mothership, preventing desertions. The pilots are an expendable resource because for each Tie Fighter pilot there are two or three candidates wanting his place when he dies.

I read it this way: The Empire didn't consider the value of the pilot's life to be any greater than any other component of the ship. So he/she wasn't afforded any extraordinary protection. It fits with an Empire that would kill billions of civilians for a "demonstration", and contrasts with our own moral sense of wanting to save pilots when their craft goes down. It makes the Empire look worse for how they treat their own. As long as they could maintain numerical superiority, and maintain whatever kill ratio was deemed acceptable, nothing else mattered.

I understand the argument behind visibility from the cockpit, but I would think the technology being used would allow the pilot to 'see' where objects area around them, either through sensors or networking between fighters.

I feel like planets should use the Tie Fighter for local defense and patrols, and the Imperial Navy should use the Tie Defender.

For the local defence forces, the imperial army (They don't spend that much on them and it gives them something to work with at least.), some sort of galactic policing force or training purpose, the TIE/LN does make its use. You don't have to care about the safety of standard TIE pilots when most of the budget goes to the Imperial navy and Stormtrooper corp and if a more prestigious and loyal world like ones in the inner rim/core want something better, they can use the standard unshielded interceptor or make their own fighters such as the defence force of Naboo. But I disagree with wide spread use of a war machine like the the Defender (Maybe in the use of a total war or on special missions/elite fleets and personal.) Intercepters with some shielding and concussion missiles is all you really need. The Empire was not at war with any major faction but was governing and protecting it's territory from disorganized rebels, pirates, and other criminals. (At least until after Yavin and leading up to the battle of Endor and beyond.)

12:13 uh no. The Empire didn’t have TIE fighters immediately. During the early years of the Empire, they still used clone war-era vehicles

All valid points but in canon many of the top pilots, e.g. Rae Sloane and Iden Versio, love the design of the TIE fighters and love to fly them. It is clear that as far as they are concerned the TIE fighter is the best of the best and they wouldn't want to fight in anything else.

How to fix TIE Fighters: 1) Tilt the wings outwards about 45 degrees, and remove the upper and lower forward panels. This opens up your field of view greatly. 2) Add windows to the sides, top and rear of the cockpit to also enhance the pilot's vision. 3) Actuate the laser-cannons and put both on the bottom right side, basically making it an adjustable turret, not a fixed gun. This makes aiming the lasers several times easier. 4) install a concussion missile launcher armed with atl 2 warheads on the left-side of the ship's cockpit. 5) Optimize the ejection system and give the seat you are strapped to and eject with small maneuvering thrusters that aids in letting the pilot navigate back t the carrier ship. 6) Install a small shield generator that grants two shields, forward-facing and rear-facing, allow the pilot to adjust strength between these as needed. When shields collapse, pilot is auto-ejected. 7) Replace the power-generator with whatever the newest and most efficient version of the same model is, the old generator is nearly 2 decades old, there *IS* a replacement by now that is economical. 8) Replace the wing-explosives for disabling the craft with a forced-eject order that pops the offending thief out of the craft instead of dismantling the whole thing. 9) Finally, armor up the cockpit as much as is possible until the new generator's gain in agility and speed is reduced to the old standard. P.S: Any increase in costs, even if it's a doubling in the price, is paid back ten-fold in the morale boost for the pilots, the survival of said loyal and skilled pilots who then gain veterancy much faster, and the survival of the craft itself, leading to a considerable decrease in replacement ratios, cutting down overall costs. Consider also replacing all TIE-Bomber pilots with Droid-brains, and tasking all bomber pilots with TIE-Fighter duties from now on to make TIE-Bombers twice as expandable, but still able to do their jobs, and gaining several more TIE-Fighters able screen them as they do their jobs.

I recall seeing a video somewhere that someone explained that in Star Wars Lore The Emperor was immensely unpopular at home, and one of the reasons was taxes because the government was in financial ruin. Think about how much it would cost to keep a civilized empire in a state of war and deployment for decades. Historically about every nation that has done so did so at the cost of bankrupting themselves or coming close.

The ejector seat when falling like a rock would kill them from the raw G force. The reason they don’t kill people when used in a conventional plane is typically your plane should be gliding down into a crash, not going straight down.

While the vast majority of Luftwaffe pilot Erich Hartmann's 352 aerial kills were on the Russian front, 7 of them were against American pilots. Erich Hartmann (1922-1993) was nicknamed "Bubi" ("the Kid") and he had only just turned 23 years old in 1945 when the World War 2 ended. Still he remains the most succesful fighter pilot in the history of aerial warfare.

The lack of self sealing fuel tanks during WWII was a universal thing. It's a myth that only the zeroes didn't have it. I think by 1943, when people had a better understanding of what was needed most planes where upgraded with self sealing fuel tanks. The bigger problem for the japanese military was the lack of experienced pilots since most of them died with their planes. Back then they didn't use parachutes because the japanese people thought it was a cowardly thing to do. They later made it mandatory for japanese pilots to wear them.
