His smoking was one of the main reasons why Nainggolan got kicked out of the Belgian national selection. Not because it affected his performances, it never did, but because, as a coach, you just cannot ask your players to be 100% focused on their job and discipline and, on the same time, let one of them smoke and drink publically just because it's in his habits and you can't make him stop. It's opening the door to any unprofessionnal behavior from other teammates who, maybe, would deal with that not as well as Radja and see their performances affected. What a pity for the team because he has that "bad boy" profile that we terribly miss in our squad.

He compensated it by being decisive in the right moments. Like at the world cup. In this era you need to be running for 90 minutes, especially off the ball. ZidAne couldn’t do that. In this era you have ozil who has the same problems. Incredibly gifted player, but couldn’t maintain the high intensity over 90 minutes.

Show me a game then. Why you think zidane wasn’t the Zidane in for example the group stages at those world cups? And only stood out in the finals when it mattered ? Because he saved his energy. Smoking, like drinking and a number of other harmful habits, is a habit whose consequences don't tend to develop until later in life, which is why these young players still went on to have great careers.
