10 Freeway shut down in downtown L.A. due to massive storage fire

A large storage fire closed part of the 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles early Saturday morning. Fire had engulfed both sides of 14th Street underneath the 10, and the heat was so intense that it melted some of the freeway's steel guardrails, according to LAFD Public Information Officer David Ortiz.

There's a homeless encampment near the 170 freeway in north Hollywood. There's always fires near or off the side of the freeway because of the homeless. Atleast once a month I see a fire there. Some serious homeless arsonists that keep doing this.

I am very familiar with this site as I drove passed it everyday for 10 years. The storage facility has always been a problem- they operate a pallet reclaim and storage yard and also they do welding. It was bound to happen. In the past 6 years it has just become a storage for random crap but in older times before the pallet yard, there were only trucks stored. Also the adjacent street is FULL of homeless.

It's sad to say but they do communities more harm than good. Drug culture in the US is the source of the problem, and fixing this requires a change of how, as a society, we view drugs. Americans are addicts of consumerism. From blue collar workers to college students, and medical professionals, everyone is on drugs, it's disgusting. What we are paying as a result of this, is a fraction of the violence/harm present in the countries that produce the drugs for Americans. LAFD saved two dogs that were walking around tbe scene. I watched it live from a person who was filming it at the scene. The LAFD were doing an amazing job and brought that enormous fire under control pretty fast. They deserve a lot of credit for what they did. They saved other businesses near the fire.

Because the only problem is these people need shelter…. This idea IS the reason we have these problems. Every investigation from Seattle and Portland to Providence, RI have shown the majority of these chronically homeless people are there by choice because they do not want to submit to shelter rules, especially those that would interfere with their free drug use. Cities like Providence or Lisbon in Portugal have shown you have to deal with these issues first. You can’t solve this by just putting them in tent cities. It is enabling and inhuman and only leads to suffering and eventual death either from their own overdose or by violence at the hands of criminals or the drug users around them.
