Ah the Jack Thompson Era - he was disbarred not because of his lawsuits, but because of his methods. He used to send documents full of images and killed the fax machines off with 100 - 300 page filings. Sometimes some of those images were fairly lewd and had absolutely nothing to do with his 'lawsuit'. I remember him coming on certain gaming forums and haranguing everyone... he got owned on them big time. His saga was one of the saddest examples of ambulance chasing ever created.

He also accused anyone (including judges) who disagree with him of being in the pocket of the gaming industry. I don't remember who said it, but i remember a statement saying that he was making slanderous statements about highly regarded people.

Had to get that high score. As far as Jack, I always remember the way he talked about Bully. He ran to anyone who would listen, and said that Rockstar was making a Columbine simulator.

Many times I got confused at how one could be sued for a mod. GTA clearly never intended for that to be seen, and it was only seen via modding, meaning someone would have to actively hack the game to see it.

I would prioritize ease of pronunciation and communication over fractional time savings in spoken settings.

Same here except that I got the games from a second hand game store (not GameStop) that had everything and it wasn't the clerk that I worried about, it was my mother. When she asked what I got I told her I got a BMX game, it was only after my sister asked is when i added the other 2 X's. My sister laughed her ass off but never told our mother. Needless 2 say I could only play it at certain times.

I think it's funny that Western gaming industry is completely "NO NO NO" when it comes to sex and nudity in video games, but are completely okay with extreme violence, gore and guns. If the games are age gated, then who cares if they have sex & violence in them? I really don't understand the situation about GTA SA. The base game didn't really had 18+ content, it was locked. Then someone just releases a mod, and for some reason everyone started screaming not at mod's creators, but at Rockstar themselves... What did they do? Nothing! And still, they were the ones to blame... WTF?

Think of it in a legal way instead of a common sense way. Imagine you dug a giant hole in order to a make a well, but decided "You know what? I think I'll just get plumbing instead." then covered the well hole with planks of wood. Later, someone finds this giant empty hole and decides to fill it up with water to make a little swimming hole, but it ends up being disastrous (like maybe the ground was toxic or there was a kraken in the water or whatever). Common sense asks you "Why would you rip open the planks and make it a swimming spot?", but legally you have to ask "Wait. Why didn't the guy refill the hole or do a better job at securing it to begin with?" They could have easily just removed the code and probably got asked "Why would you make this clearly pornographic thing into a game made for 17-year-olds?" It would've been easier and faster to just settle out of court than spend a lot of money fighting something they could've lost even more money to.

The thing is that the original base game DID include the content. The so called "hotcoffee mod" was nothing more than a switch to turn the content that was already in the public released game code either on or off. After the suit, future releases of the game had the actual game files altered (or if you bought it on steam, the game was patched to remove the content). If the 18+ content had not been in the released game's files there would have been no case. Compare to mods for games like Sims or Elderscrolls which can range from nudity to full player controlled x-rated sexual content - these are indeed 3rd party mods which change the released content of the game (models, animations and textures), unlike hotcoffee which is a small exe a couple of kb in file size which contained no actual content.

When considering the hot coffee mod, I always felt it was purely ridiculous, the idea was there but it was officially cut from the game Then a modder was able to re-enable it and people sued Rockstar studios for the mod.... Sorry but each and every game has adult sexual mods somehow somewhere and they are not the gaming studio's responsibility Lots of games have cut content as they were deemed unsuitable somehow and if a modder digs that up, then it is the modder who is to blame cause chances are, they would have made such a mod anyway... the company cut the contents for a reason after all...

Silicon Knights made my favorite horror game Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem. They may no longer be around, but Nintendo can put the game on the switch themselves. They keep renewing the copyright, do it already. I'd even take a port, my Gamecube just isn't working too well these days. I never understand when parents get angry over any content in M rated games, M rated games are the equivalent of R rated movies. Grand Theft Auto isn't meant for kids innit. I love The Witcher games, including the first two. First game may not have the best gameplay, but the story is great. You could've mentioned "Ken Panders vs Sega & Bioware" when it came to Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, where (likely around the same time as the lawsuit he hit Archie Comics with) he came down on Sega/Bioware for using substitutes of his characters in the game. Because of this, the characters introduced are no longer allowed to appear in anything Sonic-related again, Sonic Chronicles can never receive a sequel, and the game was even declared non-canon.

Yeah, my cousin was a really good writer and dungeon master. He took a one time payment for a module he wrote back when D&D was fairly new. "Lich Lords". That's a premade adventure you can play. Trouble was, they didn't do their due diligence in confirming the ages of said women, one of which was underage (17), meaning this game actually was disseminating child pornography. The people who made the game also apparently didn't disclose that the footage they captured of these women doing what they did was going to be used to create a video game.

Two controversies I can think of are related to the original Mortal Kombat release, whose violence is quaint by today's standards, and the game Night Trap for Sega CD. That grainy shower scene was all the rage back in in 1992, and very controversial. Those two games are pretty much the reason we have a game rating system today.

I just want to add this bit to the Silicon Knights vs Epic Games story. Basically, SK not only claimed that Unreal Engine was "broken," they claimed that because it was "broken" they had to spend time and money "making their own engine from scratch" to finish the game. That was when it was revealed their "made from scratch" engine was literally just Unreal Engine with some modifications. Normally, developers are allowed to modify the UE code as needed for their games as long as they still give credit to UE and Epic Games. Because SK lied and tried to claim the code as their own, they got slapped with the plagiarism and copyright infringement charges.

I get the NCAA part I actually did a paper on that in school about how they couldn't pay the players because it's considered a bribe or gift which they can't accept and that the NCAA broke many laws on making money off of the players' likenesses. It's a very fascinating lawsuit to dive into if you're interested in that sort of thing I say look everything up!

One of my favorite moments ever was life imitating art 3x over. My girlfriend and I went to see the South Park movie at the theatre. Signs all over that it was not appropriate for kids. There was a grandma that her grandson and friend( probably 8) tricked into taking to the movie amongst a few early teens with an adult. In the movie the boys sneak into the Terrance and Phillip movie. Well they go into Uncle F'er, and just like in the movie, people start getting up and walking out. My girlfriend who hates South Park says havent they seen the show? 😀

There was that one time that some guy selling Aimbot hacks on Fortnite got sued by Epic. Seriously how do you expect to sell a cheating type thing and not have this happen? Also another time it was almost Nintendo vs DoctorM64 over AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) Not a lawsuit per se, but almost it was in the form of a "Cease and Desist" order. The claim was piracy, and protection of an IP (that they were not using until DoctorM64 and his team made the demo) when it was a labor of love the whole time. Seriously and I stand by it, Nintendo could have invited them to give them what they need to polish the game up like how Sega did with Retro Sonic that turned into Sonic Mania, but I guess Sega did what Nintendont....again.
